Washburn law professor honored by Kansas Supreme Court

TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Kansas Supreme Court recognized a local woman for her decades of dedication this week. Linda Elrod is the latest recipient of the prestigious Justice Award. A Washburn University Law professor for 50 years, her passion for the rights of children in the legal system exceeds well beyond the classroom. Elrod wrote the Kansas Family Law Handbook, founded the family law certification program at Washburn, served on the Governor's Kansas Child Support Commission for more than three decades and served in leadership roles for organizations around the globe. She stays active in child advocacy to this day. Even through a storied career, she says one of her happiest moments was two weeks ago serving as a moderator for the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program. 'The two people sitting next to me were both family law certificate holders of mine,' Elrod said. 'One was the child advocate, the guardian ad litem, and the other was the prosecutor, and both of them were trying to help parents and that was their ultimate goal, was to help parents do a better job of parenting their children. They're doing what I wanted them to do, which is to make sure children are protected.' She was presented the award during a ceremony on May 20. For more local news, click here. Jasper High School students ‘stuff the bus' on High School Radio Day

JASPER, Ind. (WEHT) – Students at Jasper High School are celebrating National High School Radio Day while helping those in need. The annual celebration collects donations for Community CHEW, a Dubois County non-profit that helps feed families. Evan Elrod runs the school's radio station, 91.7 The Curve, giving students the chance to broadcast live for Stuff The Bus. 'One of the things that we don't do a lot of that other radio stations do is go live on location,' says Elrod. 'This gives the kids an opportunity to get out of the studio and have that live pressure moment of, 'Okay, what am I supposed to say now?'' 'It kind of has helped me find exactly what I want to do and exactly how I can use that in real world experiences,' says Jasper senior Ava Bower. Grant Seibert, a junior, says the event helps personally and professionally. 'It just makes me feel good that I'm able to give back for all the great things that the community has provided for me,' says Seibert. Honor Flight mail sorting begins in Evansville 'I was not expecting this many people,' adds Bower. 'It's just really nice to see how many people we impact with The Curve, because you're behind the radio station, you are talking to yourself, basically,' she says, 'so it's really nice to know that we are heard.' For some students, it's a chance to see what a future in broadcasting looks like with a live report from a special event. For others, like senior Caelyn Lenardo, it's a cause that hits close to home. 'Personally, for me, I have been on the other side of this. I have been a part of Community CHEW when I was younger,' explains Lenardo. 'I used to go to their Summer program and they would totally help a lot. They would feed me every single day when my parents were at work and I was 12 years old and didn't know how to cook anything other than an egg!' Lenardo goes on to say, 'I love that I'm part of something that helps give back to someone that I have been at one point.' Many students say the turnout for Stuff The Bus exceeded their expectations. Elrod says the community support was never in question. 'I will never underestimate the power of a strong community, and that's where we're at here,' says Elrod. 'We have a really strong community that isn't afraid to give back.' Tanger Med Port Reached Over $1.2 Billion Revenue in 2024

Rabat – The Tanger Med Port finished the 2024 fiscal year with a revenue of MAD 11.23 billion ($1.212 billion), marking an increase of 12.3% compared to 2023. The Tangier Med Group said the port reached a historic milestone in 2024 as it handled 10.24 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). With these figures, the port reaffirmed its standing as a regional hub and its role as a key platform for national imports and exports. The statement described the port as the leading hub in the Mediterranean and Africa, recalling the latest ranking by Alphaliner, which placed the Moroccan port 17th worldwide. Tanger Med Group operates 25 terminals for handling containers and bulk cargo through Marsa Maroc, which also celebrated a record-breaking year with 63.3 million tons handled. This represents an 11% increase compared to 2023. The Group's total cargo volume, including performances from the operator of the Tanger Med Port Complex and Marsa Maroc, reached 187 million tons and 11.33 million TEUs over the past year. It also manages over 3,000 hectares of economic activity zones, hosting over 1,400 companies that are active in different key sectors like the automotive, aerospace, textile, agri-good, and logistics domains. These sectors generated a total business volume of MAD 174 billion in 2024, creating over 130,000 job opportunities. Annual growth recorded by the port has long been a concern for neighbouring countries, including Spanish media. Several news outlets have shared concerns about the Moroccan port outperforming major international hubs in Spain. In 2021, Spanish newspaper El País stressed the importance of Tanger Med Port, noting that its performance reflected a 'negative' impact on Spanish ports. 'Spain has been losing ground since King Mohammed VI inaugurated this infrastructure in 2007,' El País wrote. Several government reports from Spain also highlighted the Moroccan hub's impressive performance. One report in 2022 noted that Spanish port Algeciras risked losing up to 60% of its container shipments to Morocco's Tangier Med Port. Family still waiting for answers two years after disappearance of St. Augustine woman

Only Action News Jax is hearing from the family of a St. Augustine woman, who has now been missing for more than two years. Just weeks ago, deputies were seen digging at a St. Johns County property for evidence in the case of 44-year-old Laura Bryant. Despite their efforts, investigators said they found nothing. Bryant was first reported missing in December 2022. Her sister Beth Elrod described Bryant as having a 'very bubbly, very shiny personality, was always just happy.' Elrod said her sister was living in St. Augustine at the time of her disappearance. 'She was living with a friend of ours, but he passed away,' said Elrod. 'And that's the first time I knew there was something wrong, when she didn't show up to his funeral.' Law enforcement said they do have reason to believe she could be in Lake City. The Columbia County Sheriff's Office revealed it is assisting in the investigation. Family members are still seeking answers in Bryant's disappearance. Anyone who has information on Bryant's whereabouts is asked to contact SJSO at 904-824-8304, or crimetips@ To remain anonymous and possibly be eligible for a cash reward, contact Crime Stoppers at 888-277-TIPS (8477). Democratic Campaign Veterans Adrienne Elrod And Rufus Gifford Launch Political And Public Affairs Strategy Firm

Adrienne Elrod and Rufus Gifford, who have been top strategists on Democratic campaigns and officials in recent presidential administrations, are partnering to launch a new communications, fundraising and strategy firm. The Elrod Gifford Group will represent individual, non-profit and corporate clients, at a moment when Democrats and progressives grapple with when and how to respond to the Republican dominance at the federal level. Elrod said that the firm will work with clients to 'navigate this increasingly challenging and complex world.' More from Deadline D.C. Media's Gridiron Dinner Features A Toast To The First Amendment -- And Not To The President "Voice Of America Is Being Silenced": Director Speaks Out After Trump Starts Dismantling U.S.-Funded Broadcast Entities Senate Approves GOP Funding Bill, Averting Government Shutdown - Update Elrod most recently was senior adviser and senior spokesperson for Kamala Harris' presidential campaign and, before that, had the same position for President Joe Biden's reelection bid. She was director of external affairs for the CHIPS program office for Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo. She also was director of surrogate strategy and operations for Biden's 2020 campaign and had a similar role in Hillary Clinton's 2016 bid. Gifford was finance chair of the Harris-Walz and Biden-Harris campaigns, which raised a combined $2.2 billion. He was chief of protocol with the rank of ambassador during the Biden administration, and served as U.S. ambassador to Denmark during the second term of Barack Obama. He also has been national finance director of the Democratic National Committee and served as an aide on Obama's 2008 campaign. In addition to corporate and philanthropic organizations, they also want to work with political figures and groups. Gifford said that 'there's something of an opportunity right now, both for the Democratic Party, but also the opposition to Trump, to reorganize and build ourselves back up again. Adrienne and I want to be part of that conversation, and want to lead some of that work that will inevitably be happening over the next couple of months, as well as years in advance of 2028.' Elrod noted that Democrats 'have not been in this place since 1988,' after Michael Dukakis was defeated in the presidential race, and the party was left without a clear leader. Now, she said, Democrats 'don't necessarily have a referee, one human being who is sort of known as the leader of the party. And then that person's people become the operative class if you will.' 'We're by no means trying to say that we're the leaders of the party, but we want to work with individuals, the next generation of talent, that is going to lead the party going into the future, going into 2026, going into 2028,' Elrod said. 'We want to work with those individuals. We want to work with those organizations. We want to work on the front lines of really helping to reorganize the party.' Gifford said, 'Trump 2.0 is a chaotic version of governing, the likes of which we haven't seen in our lifetime and, I would argue, longer than that. So how can we help people who have anxiety, who want to help, who want to help in one way, shape or form, how can we help that? And we do think that we will have the ability to try to steer some of those conversations.'
