Hong Kong's South China Morning Post wins 9 photo, video awards
The South China Morning Post has won nine awards in two competitions organised by the Hong Kong Press Photographers Association. Post photographers picked up eight prizes across four categories in the Focus at the Frontline 2024 contest. Sam Tsang's shot of a construction worker's clothing catching fire after an accident in Kwun Tong won the Breaking News category, while Elson Li's image of swimmers in the Triathlon World Cup diving into Victoria Harbour was awarded the top prize in Sports. Post photographers Eugene Lee and Dickson Lee were also honoured in the Nature and Environment, and Portrait categories. The results of the association's Video at the Frontline annual news and documentary video competition were also announced on Monday, with the Post picking up the top prize. The judges said the winning entry by senior video producer Bryan Wood, titled 'Domestic 'helpers' battle two-week rule to stay in Hong Kong', showed 'good journalist sense'. They added: 'With the unique characters, strong visuals, and an effective use of animation, it tells the story of Hong Kong's neglected voices in a very complete manner.'

Hong Kong's home prices slip towards nine-year low as Trump tariffs spook buyers

Prices in the secondary market declined 0.49% in March, according to an index published by the Rating and Valuation Department on Monday, following a 0.56% setback in February. The index has retreated a cumulative 1.7% for the quarter to the level last seen in July 2016. Since the city's housing market peaked in September 2021, prices of lived-in homes have slumped by 28.6% as social unrest and the Covid-19 pandemic sent the local economy into a recession. US President Donald Trump delivered his tariff blows on April 2, after threatening to do so since his inauguration in January. Looking to invest in overseas properties? Explore projects available for sale around the world 'Potential buyers took a wait-and-see approach,' said Eddie Kwok, executive director, valuation and advisory services, at CBRE Hong Kong. Home prices were likely to dip further in the coming months, with the US and China still locked in worsening trade tensions, he added. Meanwhile, rents in the city rose for the fourth straight month in March to the highest level since October, according to government data. Rents climbed 0.1% from a month earlier, and have risen by a cumulative 0.4% since the start of the year. Buyers were putting off home-buying plans in favour of renting, Kwok said, given the heightened trade tensions and doubts about future global interest-rate cuts. 'Going forward, we see residential rents picking up as the city welcomes more immigrants, especially during the summer period with non-local students preparing for the next academic year,' he added.
