Palestinian Abou Ali seals Ahly win over NBE to maintain Egyptian League lead - Egyptian Football
Palestinian forward Wessam Abou Ali scored a stoppage-time winner as Ahly edged NBE Club 2-1 on Saturday to retain their lead in the Egyptian Premier League Playoff stage. Ahly remain top of the table with 55 points, two ahead of second-placed Pyramids FC, who defeated Petrojet 2-0 also on Saturday. Midfielder Emam Ashour opened the scoring in the 21st minute with a powerful strike from outside the area, moving him to the top of the league's scoring chart with 12 goals. Togolese striker Yaw Annor levelled for NBE Club just before halftime, dribbling past defenders in the box before calmly slotting home. Abou Ali, who came on at the start of the second half in place of Nejc Gradisar, netted the decisive goal in the sixth minute of added time, converting from close range after a well-placed assist by defender Yasser Ibrahim. Ahly coach Emad El-Nahhas also introduced Amr El-Sulaya, Mohamed 'Afsha' Magdi and Hussein El-Shahat in the second half to revitalise his side. El-Sulaya came close with a powerful long-range effort that forced a save from NBE goalkeeper Abdel Aziz El Balouti. Both teams had limited chances in the second half, with possession evenly shared, but Ahly's late push proved enough to secure the three points. Ahly will face Pharco FC on Wednesday, 28 May, in the final round of the Playoff stage, where they could celebrate the league title. Sundowns edge past Al Ahly on away goals to reach TotalEnergies CAF Champions League final
Published: Friday, 25 April 2025 Mamelodi Sundowns clinched a dramatic spot in the final of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League after holding Al Ahly to a 1-1 draw in Cairo on Friday night, progressing on the away goals rule. After a tense 0-0 stalemate in the first leg in Pretoria, it was Al Ahly who drew first blood in the return leg at the Cairo International Stadium. Taher Mohamed fired the hosts into the lead midway through the first half, smashing home from outside the box after being teed up by the lively Emam Ashour. Backed by a passionate home crowd, Al Ahly dominated much of the first period and looked on course to finally break their winless streak against the South Africans. But Mamelodi Sundowns showed their resilience and turned the tie on its head in the closing stages. With ten minutes remaining, a low cross caused panic in the Ahly defence, resulting in Yasser Ibrahim inadvertently turning the ball into his own net under pressure from Peter Shalulile. It was a heartbreaking moment for the Egyptian giants and a lifeline for Sundowns, who knew a 1-1 draw would be enough to see them through. Al Ahly threw everything forward in search of a late winner, with substitutes Achraf Bencharki and Wessam Abou Ali both going close in a frantic finale. But Sundowns, marshalled superbly by their backline and aided by a bit of fortune, held firm to seal a famous qualification. It marks a significant milestone for Pretoria-based side, who have now gone nine consecutive matches unbeaten against the record African champions. Sundowns' reward is a place in the final, where they will face either Pyramids FC or Orlando Pirates — with the second semi-final set to be decided later. For Al Ahly, it was a night of bitter disappointment despite their brave efforts, as their dream of a record-extending CAF Champions League title came to a crashing halt at home.

Ahly beat Al-Hilal to set up CAF Champions League semi-final clash with Sundowns - Egyptian Football
Ahly have booked their place in the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League with a 2-0 aggregate victory over Sudan's Al-Hilal, setting up a highly anticipated clash with South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns. The Egyptian giants, who held a 1-0 advantage from the first leg in Cairo, secured a second-leg win by the same margin on Tuesday to advance to the last four for the sixth consecutive time. Emam Ashour scored the decisive goal ten minutes from time, slotting home a right-footed shot into the bottom corner after a swift counterattack and a well-timed assist from substitute Taher Mohamed Taher. Right-back Mohamed Hany had netted the only goal in the first leg, giving the record 12-time African champions a slender but vital lead. Ahly coach Marcel Koller made a key tactical change in the 61st minute, introducing winger Taher in place of Palestinian striker Wessam Abou Ali to add pace to the frontline. The move paid off as Taher - who made his return for the first time since 14 December 2024 - played a pivotal role in the late goal that sealed the tie. Al-Hilal came close to snatching a lead in the 75th minute, but Abdel Raouf Yagoub's powerful effort from inside the box was superbly saved by Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed El Shennawy. After Ashour's strike, Koller turned to his bench again, bringing on youngsters Ahmed Reda and Mohamed Abdallah to shore up the midfield, while Karim El Debes replaced Achraf Bencharki in a late tactical reshuffle. Ahly will now meet fierce rivals Mamelodi Sundowns in the semi-finals after the South African side edged Tunisia's Esperance 1-0 on aggregate in their quarter-final tie.
