Actress Dawn Yeoh hopes Emerald Hill role will finally earn her a Star Awards trophy after 20-year career
By now, you should know that Dawn Yeoh's evil role as Kang Si Li in Emerald Hill is one of the most prominent characters from the Mediacorp blockbuster. But is the hype surrounding the 39-year-old actress' character enough for her to bag a trophy at the upcoming Star Awards on Jul 6? Yeoh sure hopes so. Despite being in the industry for two decades, Yeoh has not snagged a single award at the annual ceremony. This year, she's in the running for Top 10 Most Popular Female Artiste. "Actually I really yearn for it, but I dare not harbour too much hope because I'm afraid the disappointment will only be bigger," she told Yeoh, however, thinks it will be very heartwarming if she clinches her first Top 10 trophy while her Emerald Hill husband Romeo Tan wins his final one at the same time. If Tan wins his 10th Top 10 this year, he will move on to become an All-Time Favourite Artiste at the next Star Awards. According to Yeoh, playing Kang Si Li was a turning point in her career as it helped her gain attention from audiences outside of Singapore. "That day I was at a forum and went to the booth for Chinese media company Tencent. The staff all could recognise me and said: 'San Shao Nai Nai (third young mistress, Yeoh's other title in the show) is here'," she recalled excitedly. Yeoh was so overwhelmed by that incident that she was moved to tears. "To be finally seen after being in the industry for 20 years feels like a weight has been lifted off my chest," she said. She is now hoping to take on even more baddie roles in the future, especially after seeing the change in how the audience perceive such characters. "In the past the villains were all criticised and hated on, but nowadays people are able to appreciate the complexities and charm of the characters. I don't mind playing villain roles at all, as long as I can have a breakthrough and unleash my potential," said Yeoh. Besides acting, Yeoh is currently also a live streamer under director Jack Neo's Star Live Mall. She previously co-founded e-commerce platform Sibay Shiok with Terence Cao in 2021 before they both joined forces with Jack. When asked about balancing acting and being an entrepreneur, Yeoh then emphasised that she "doesn't want to let go of either" sides of her career. "If I have the ability and luck, I hope that I can go steady and far in both areas," she said, adding that more clients have taken interest in content involving her recently. At the same time, Yeoh, who has received invitations to star in other upcoming Mediacorp dramas, is sieving through scripts and looking to go for auditions in the near future. San Shao Nai Nai may not have had a good ending in Emerald Hill, but it seems like her real life is turning out great.

Emerald Hill actor Xiu Jie Kai recognised by tourists in Taiwan
Blockbuster drama series Emerald Hill may have wrapped its run in Singapore, but fans clearly have not forgotten the show or its cast. Especially not Taiwanese actor Xiu Jie Kai who played Zhang Jin He, better known as the er shao ye (second son) of the Zhang family. In a video posted on YouTube, the 42-year-old was out shopping with his wife, Taiwanese actress, Alyssa Chia, 50, when a woman suddenly exclaimed in Mandarin, 'Little Nonya?' Emerald Hill is a spin-off of the 2008 mega hit The Little Nonya, and it appears that this group of fans, likely Singaporeans, instantly recognised Jie Kai. Caught off guard, Xiu gave an embarrassed smile while Chia smirked and playfully confirmed their suspicions, teasing, 'Yes, you guessed correctly! Go get his autograph quickly' before cheekily stepping aside to let her husband deal with the excited fans. Of course, it was all in good fun as Chia was seen helping them take pictures as Xiu proudly introduced her as his wife. Wait, shouldn't Chia be in the shot too? She is also an established actress in her own right, even winning a Golden Horse award for Best Actress in 2021. As she walked away, Chia mused with a laugh, 'Wah… Xiu Jie Kai is very popular now. Being with him, I feel the pressure.' A proud-looking Xiu then caught up with her and said: 'Now you know how happy you will feel when we go out together?' With Emerald Hill now airing on Taiwan's TVBS 42, and continuing to be a major hit much like in Singapore and Malaysia, fan encounters like this might become the new normal for Xiu. The series has already racked up more than 1.77 million views on TVBS' social media platforms since it debuted on Apr 6.

Forum: TV producers working with mental health experts to ensure responsible storytelling
We thank Dr Charmaine Tang and the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) for their feedback on the portrayal of schizophrenia in Emerald Hill – The Little Nyonya Story (TV series' portrayal of schizophrenia can affect understanding of condition, May 8). We acknowledge the influence that media representations have on public understanding of mental health conditions, and the social responsibility that comes with this. It was never our intention to generalise or conflate mental illness with moral failing, and we regret that it was not conveyed more clearly in the show that An Na's evil-doings stem from her background and choices, not mental illness. To this, we apologise sincerely that the show unintentionally reinforced harmful stereotypes. We appreciate the concerns raised, and value the opportunity to reflect on how portrayals can be improved. We are currently consulting IMH on several upcoming productions, and remain committed to working with mental health professionals to support responsible storytelling. ‘Emerald Hill's' Chantalle Ng on lessons learnt playing the villainous character Zhang An Na, her next project and more
Above Behind the scenes of 'Emerald Hill' This prompted her to reach out for support. 'I'm so grateful for the friends who became my guiding lights through that period,' she shares, crediting her co-star Tasha Low and executive producer Loh Woon Woon for helping her navigate these challenges. 'Their steady support was a beacon when I needed it the most.' Along with getting help from her loved ones, she also looked to exercise to help her mental health. 'After filming, I'd often go for a run, as it became my passageway between reel and real,' she says, highlighting the importance of eating well and surrounding herself with good people. For Ng, stepping into her mother's formidable shoes has been both a professional milestone and a deeply personal journey. In an interview with Tatler Singapore, the rising star shares her experiences on set, lessons learnt playing Zhang and what's next for her. Above Ng plays Zhang An Na in 'Emerald Hill' Why did you decide to venture into the entertainment industry? I grew up watching my mother on TV. She's my biggest role model and I've always been so proud of her. I wanted to step onto the screen myself and continue the path she's paved. What was the dynamic like between you, Ferlyn Wong and Tasha Low both on and off the Emerald Hill set? Tasha and I couldn't help but giggle whenever we had scenes together—I even had to beg her to leave the set just so I could finish a take without bursting into laughter. Ferlyn, on the other hand, was our steady anchor. She grounded us and really helped us dive into character. How did your interactions with Peranakan experts influence your performance? We had the opportunity to work with Peranakan experts during the filming of the show. They taught me how to walk, talk and even cook like a true Peranakan. I'm so grateful for their guidance and for the glimpse they gave me into what life was like in that era. Above Ng and her mother, Lin Meijiao, a veteran actress in Singapore Has playing An Na changed your perspective on villainous characters or the way you approach roles in general? Definitely. There's a Chinese saying '可恨之人必有可悲之处' which means behind every villain is a broken person craving love. Playing Anna was such a ride, digging into her fears and insecurities, then presenting her as someone so calculated and fearless. I loved the complexity of the role. Anna was also very counterintuitive. As an actress, you're often taught that being well-liked is the ultimate goal. But this time, that belief was shattered. I realised that my craft could speak louder than likeability. This journey has been humbling, reflective and full of growth. The series quickly became a hit. Why do you think the show resonated so strongly with viewers? There's a deep nostalgia to this project and every single person on the production gave it their all to bring that legacy to life. And to me, a drama may start and end, but the legacy of Yamamoto Yueniang is #forever. What motivates you to keep going? Something in me still wants to keep going. Because I love this craft deeply. Because I love the people who make it all worth it. Above While Ng was excited about the role, she quickly learnt the mental strain it would have on her Above To prepare for Zhang's complex character, Ng delved deep into the character's emotional world If you could switch roles with any character on Emerald Hill , who would it be and why? When I auditioned for Anna, Anya, and Xinniang, I was asked if there was any role I especially wanted—or didn't want. I said I didn't think I could portray Anya. Her backstory is so heavy—forced into prostitution, dealt a life of cruelty by fate. But if I ever get the chance again, I'd love to challenge that role. To prove to myself that if I allow myself to be vulnerable enough, I can step into anyone's world. What's next? My new drama is The Gift Of Time . I'm acting alongside Xie Shao Guang—his first show after leaving the industry 16 years ago. Being cast as his daughter and being able to work with him feels like a dream. I've also been given another once-in-a-lifetime opportunity on the variety side—something I can't reveal just yet, but it's been keeping me up at night with excitement. Outside of work, what's next for me is to look at the world with starry eyes and to love every moment I'm given on this earth, especially with the amazing people around me. Credits
