Emperor Emeritus Diagnosed with Silent Myocardial Ischemia
News from Japan Society May 10, 2025 17:20 (JST) Tokyo, May 10 (Jiji Press)--Japan's Emperor Emeritus Akihito has been diagnosed with silent myocardial ischemia, a condition of an asymptomatic patient whose blood flow from the coronary arteries to the heart muscle is reduced due to excessive exercise, the Imperial Household Agency said Saturday. The 91-year-old former Emperor returned to the Sento Imperial Residence in Tokyo on Saturday after five days of hospitalization at the University of Tokyo Hospital in which he underwent examinations including an electrocardiogram, X-rays, an echocardiogram and a coronary CT scan. He will receive new drug treatment while avoiding excessive exercise. Doctors will need to observe his condition with extra caution. He is expected to continue his research on goby fish. In 2012, then Emperor Akihito underwent coronary artery bypass surgery. Empress Emerita Michiko, 90, visited the Emperor Emeritus every day since he was hospitalized on Tuesday. (Franck Robichon / Pool Photo via AP, File) TOKYO — Japan's Emperor Emeritus Akihito will undergo heart tests at a hospital after an unspecified problem was detected during a routine checkup, Japanese media reports said Monday. The Imperial Household Agency did not answer calls to its office on Monday, a national holiday, to confirm reports by the Kyodo News Service and several other Japanese media. Akihito, 91, who is retired, is the father of Emperor Naruhito. He abdicated from the Chrysanthemum Throne in 2019. Kyodo said Akihito will be hospitalized, starting Tuesday, at the University of Tokyo Hospital. Other details were not immediately available. Akihito had heart bypass surgery in 2012. Akihito ascended to the throne after his father, Hirohito, died in 1989. No other emperor has abdicated in modern Japanese history. But Akihito has broken with other imperial tradition. He was the first emperor to marry a commoner, Empress Michiko. Article written by The Associated Press

The 91-year-old former Emperor has been diagnosed with a high probability of myocardial ischaemia, which occurs when blood flow to the heart muscle is insufficient, during regular health checks, according to the agency. Loal media also reported that It will be the first time for the emperor emeritus to be hospitalised since February to March in 2012, when he underwent coronary bypass surgery at the age of 78. According to his aides, the emperor emeritus had regular health checks in mid-April, during which signs of possible myocardial ischemia were observed on an electrocardiogram. After a reexamination at his residence in Tokyo's Minato Ward, it was learned on Sunday that he likely has myocardial ischemia. With no symptoms, the emperor emeritus had continued his routine morning and evening walks until Sunday, but skipped the morning walk on Monday. He also decided to postpone a plan to stay at the Hayama Imperial Villa with Empress Emerita Michiko from Thursday. In July 2022, the emperor emeritus was diagnosed with right heart failure due to a problem with the tricuspid valve between the right atrium and ventricle. Since then, he has been receiving medical therapy, including drug administration and water restriction.

Emperor emeritus to be hospitalized for heart tests
Emperor Emeritus Akihito and Empress Emerita Michiko pose for a photograph at their residence in Tokyo on Oct 4, 2024. The Imperial Household Agency announced Monday that Emperor Emeritus Akihito will be hospitalized on Tuesday for examination after being diagnosed with a high possibility of myocardial ischemia. According to the agency, the emperor emeritus, 91, underwent a regular checkup at the Imperial Household Agency Hospital in mid-April, and was found to have symptoms suggesting myocardial ischemia, a condition in which blood flow from the coronary arteries to the heart muscle is insufficient. As a result of another examination on Sunday, it was determined that there was a high possibility of myocardial ischemia, NHK reported. Akihito will be hospitalized at the University of Tokyo Hospital in Bunkyo Ward. In 2012, at the age of 78, he was diagnosed with angina pectoris and underwent coronary artery bypass surgery. Furthermore, in July three years ago, he temporarily experienced severe symptoms of cerebral anemia, and an MRI scan revealed that he had right-sided heart failure caused by tricuspid valve regurgitation, a condition in which the valve connecting the right ventricle and right atrium becomes difficult to close. © Japan Today
