Here's where Florida's Billy Napier lands on The Athletic's hot seat index

Billy Napier and his Florida football program saw a second-half surge last season that ostensibly saved the head coach's job, finishing above the .500 mark for the first time in four years while winning their first bowl game since 2019. It was a clutch stretch that gave Napier and Co. a second life... but they are not out of the woods quite yet. Once again, the Orange and Blue face one of the most difficult schedules in the nation, which includes navigating through a brutal Southeastern Conference slate. While the hot seat status of the sideline corps has cooled to a simmer this summer, a bad start to the 2025 campaign could turn the burner right back up. Following the past week's SEC media days event, The Athletic's Seth Emerson took on the task of assembling his preseason head coach hot seat index. In it, he placed Napier in the "lukewarm" category — below the "hot" and "warm", but above the final "cool, but..." tiers — alongside LSU Tigers skipper Brian Kelly. "The vibes in Gainesville are definitely good, and Napier has turned a corner after winning five of seven to end 2024," Emerson begins. "After going through the media gauntlet on Wednesday, Napier acknowledged it was a nice change from last year." "A little more narrative about turning around, than how do you turn it around, if that makes sense,' Napier offered during his turn at the podium. "Look, we're preparing to be dropped in the deep end of the ocean again. That's the world we live in. The good thing is we have a team that's prepared, they know what winning football looks like.' However, Emerson acknowledges that there are plenty of variables in play — many of which can easily turn for the worse. "Still, things could go sideways again, especially with a daunting schedule and the health of QB DJ Lagway still a question. And Napier's buyout is down to $20 million. He may not need a College Football Playoff appearance, but he does need to keep momentum in the right direction," he concludes. ‘Most consequential 3 seconds': Ex-Alaska Airlines pilot recalls attempting to shut off flight's engine mid-air; feared fatal end

ANI file photo Former Alaska Airlines pilot Joseph Emerson, recalls the most 'consequential three seconds' of his life when he had pulled down levers that could cut off fuel to the engines in an Alaska Air Flight 2059, reports CBS News. He had reportedly been under the influence of 'magic mushrooms' and lost sense of reality. Emerson boarded the flight bound for San Francisco as a passenger from Everett, Washington with 83 other passengers and crew on board. He was assigned the cockpit jump seat located behind the pilot and first officer. "I had no intention of crashing an actual airplane. I wanted to wake up. I was convinced I wasn't going home to my wife and kids," he said in an interview with CBS News on Thursday. At that time he was grieving the death of his best friend and reportedly experimented with the psychedelic drug. "You're not going home. You need to wake up. That's when I acted. I pulled the handles that were in front of my face," he said recalling the incident. "I mean, in the dream, in that dissociative state, I thought they were going to wake me up. It didn't wake me up, right? I was in reality. I know that now. You know, it's the most consequential three seconds of my life.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo "I know what those levers do in a real airplane and I need to wake up from this. You know, it's 30 seconds of my life that I wish I could change, and I can't,' he was quoted saying by ABC News. The flight was diverted and landed safely in Portland, Oregon, where Emerson was taken into custody. He is scheduled to face trial next month on a federal charge of interfering with a flight crew, and also faces numerous state charges, including 83 misdemeanor counts of reckless endangerment and one felony count of first-degree endangering an aircraft, reported CBS News. Since then the National Transportation Safety Board has since hosted a first-of-its-kind forum focused on pilot mental health to examine current regulations. The FAA launched its own policy review, with both agencies advocating for reforms to remove barriers to mental health care. "Our pilots and air traffic controllers are not going to lose their job when they ask for help. We in this country must recognize that that's strength. And they're not to be punished. We're going to help them, process them, and get them back into cockpits," said Minnesota Rep. Pete Stauber, reported CBS News. Illinois Rep. Sean Casten and Minnesota Rep. Pete Stauber are spearheading a bipartisan push in Congress to implement reforms within two years through the Mental Health in Aviation Act. The legislation aims to improve access to mental health care for pilots and air traffic controllers and expand the number of medical examiners available.

When a rogue pilot tried to shut down both engines at 31,000 feet. What happened will surprise you

As the investigation into the Air India Ahmedabad crash intensifies, with reports now suggesting that investigators are focusing on the actions of the flight's captain, the aviation world is once again reminded of how critical decisions made in the cockpit can change the course of a flight in an instant. Long before the Ahmedabad tragedy, a similar high-stakes situation unfolded aboard Alaska Airlines Flight 2059 in October 2023, when an off-duty pilot sitting in the cockpit jump seat attempted to disable both engines mid-air, putting dozens of lives at risk. The aircraft, an Embraer 175, was cruising at 31,000 feet with 84 people on board, including the crew. Seated in the cockpit jump seat was Captain Joseph David Emerson, an off-duty Alaska Airlines pilot. Without warning, Emerson reached for the engine fire suppression controls—known as T-handles—attempting to shut off the fuel supply to both engines. The flight crew then diverted the aircraft safely to Portland International Airport, where Emerson was taken into custody. According to airline officials, engine power was not lost during the incident due to the timely response of the flight crew, who successfully secured the aircraft before the situation escalated further. In an official statement, Alaska Airlines confirmed that the flight had faced a credible security threat involving the off-duty pilot, who was traveling in the cockpit jump seat. The airline praised the Horizon captain and first officer for their swift response in handling a highly unusual and potentially catastrophic situation. Captain Emerson had been with Alaska Air Group for over two decades. He began his career with Horizon Air in 2001, later joining Virgin America in 2012 before becoming part of Alaska Airlines following its acquisition of Virgin in 2016. He was promoted to captain in 2019. Throughout his career, he maintained all required FAA medical certifications and had no history of suspension or revocation. However, following the incident, troubling details emerged from court documents and witness testimonies. Emerson told police he had not slept for approximately 40 hours, felt dehydrated and exhausted, and had been experiencing depression for about six months. He admitted to having taken psychedelic mushrooms for the first time roughly two days prior to the flight. He said he believed he was dreaming when he pulled the fire handles and wanted to 'wake up.' The two pilots managed to subdue him after about 25 to 30 seconds of physical struggle. Around 90 seconds passed between Emerson's first 'I'm not okay' and his removal from the cockpit. After being handcuffed by the cabin crew, Emerson reportedly told them he had just endangered the lives of 84 people, including his own. He was later seen using his phone to text a similar message. Through his attorney, Emerson pleaded not guilty to all federal charges, including 83 counts of attempted murder. He was released on a $50,000 bond in December 2023 and returned to his home in California. You Might Also Like: Explainer: What are the fuel switches at the centre of the Air India crash probe?
