UAE Launches Youth Council to Drive Agricultural Innovation and Sustainability
The UAE has unveiled the Emirates Youth Council for Agriculture, a new initiative designed to empower young Emiratis to lead innovation in agriculture and bolster national food security. Launched by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) in partnership with the Federal Youth Authority, the council was announced on the third day of the Emirates Agriculture Conference and Exhibition 2025, held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan at the ADNEC Centre in Al Ain. The council brings together young professionals from across the UAE's public and private sectors to advance smart agricultural practices, support youth-led research, and raise environmental awareness within communities. Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, said the council will serve as a catalyst for impactful youth-led initiatives. 'This is a platform for innovation, a channel for solutions to environmental and food security challenges,' she said. Sana bint Mohammed Suhail, Minister of Family, highlighted the cultural and economic importance of agriculture, calling it a source of sustainable income and family stability. Dr. Sultan bin Saif Al Neyadi, Minister of State for Youth Affairs, emphasized the council's alignment with the National Youth Agenda 2031. 'Youth Councils are now national laboratories—spaces where ideas are turned into action,' he said. As part of Youth Day activities, a Youth Circle session explored how families play a foundational role in cultivating agricultural values. Speakers echoed the vision of the UAE's Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed, stressing agriculture's link to identity, heritage and the future. The agreements, formalised over the first two days of the event at the ADNEC Centre, were signed in the presence of Minister Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak. These partnerships align with the UAE's broader goals of becoming a global leader in sustainable agriculture and food systems. One major agreement saw MOCCAE and Silal commit to building a data-driven, sustainable food strategy that improves health and supports long-term food security. Additional partnerships with Barakat and Lulu Group focus on reducing food waste, promoting eco-friendly packaging, and expanding retail access for local produce. The National Agriculture Centre signed multiple MoUs, including with Lulu Retail to support accredited local farmers and with Khalifa University to develop agricultural innovation through research, funding, and mentorship. MOCCAE also partnered with the Mohamed Bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence to establish a new AI research lab aimed at advancing agricultural technologies. Further collaboration with the University of Sharjah, Khalifa University, University of Khorfakkan, and University of Al Dhaid will drive joint agricultural research and capacity building initiatives. The agreement focuses on exploring joint projects and activities in food security, research, studies, and capacity aims to strengthen cooperation between the Ministry and universities, leveraging their expertise and research centers. This collaboration will support the development of research projects and capabilities in the field of food security, for all parties involved. The MoU was signed by Mohammed Saeed Al Nuaimi; Professor Dr. Essam Eldin Agami, Director of the University of Sharjah; Professor Ebrahim Al Hajri, President of Khalifa University of Science and Technology; Professor Dr. Ali Hilal Alnaqbi, Chancellor of the University of Khorfakkan; and Professor Dr. Aisha Ahmed Bu Shlaibi, Chancellor of the University of Al and the Islamic Development Bank Group signed an amendment to the agreement between the UAE Government and the Islamic Development Bank Group regarding the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA). The amendment was signed by Mohammed Saeed Al Nuaimi, and Eng. Mohammed Jamal Al-Saati, Special Advisor to the President of the Islamic Development Bank, in the presence of Dr. Tarifa Alzaabi, Director General of ICBA. These MoUs show MOCCAE's commitment to working with partners to promote environmental sustainability, improve food security, and boost the national economy by adopting modern technologies and best practices in agriculture and food.
