Gavin Williams' gem guides Guardians past Angels
June 1 - Gavin Williams allowed just one hit in 6 2/3 innings and Jose Ramirez hit a home run for the second straight game to lift the host Cleveland Guardians to a 4-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday. Willams (5-3) pitched into the seventh inning for the third time this season. He allowed two unearned runs, walked two and fanned six while throwing 103 pitches. Angels leadoff man Zach Neto had the only hit off Williams when he singled with two outs in the fifth. Emmanuel Clase pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his 13th save in 15 attempts. Ramirez hit his 11th home run in the fourth inning to give the Guardians a 2-0 lead. The third baseman has reached base in 29 straight games and has registered at least one hit in 24 of his last 25 games. Cleveland first baseman Carlos Santana extended his hitting streak to 11 with a seventh-inning single. Williams ran into trouble in the seventh when Logan O'Hoppe reached on an error when he hit a shot to short that ripped a hole in Gabriel Arias' glove. Williams then hit Jo Adell with a pitch to put two runners on. Hunter Gaddis replaced Williams and immediately gave up a single to Luis Rengifo to make it 4-1. Mike Trout drove in Adell with a pinch-hit single to cut the lead to two. The rally stalled, however, when Yoan Moncada took too long getting to the plate to pinch-hit for Scott Kingery. Moncada was issued an automatic strike for the delay and Gaddis threw two strikes by him to end the threat. The Guardians opened the scoring in the third when Arias led off with a walk and took second on a wild pitch. Arias moved to third on a Nolan Jones single and scored on a Steven Kwan single. Ramirez' blast made it 2-0 to lead off the fourth, but Cleveland was not done yet. Kyle Manzardo followed Ramirez with a single. After a pair of strikeouts, Bo Naylor drew a walk and Arias was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jones made Angels' starter Jack Kochanowicz pay with a single to center that scored Manzardo and Arias for a four-run Cleveland lead. Kochanowicz (3-7) gave up four earned runs in 3 2/3 innings with five hits and three walks on 84 pitches. The right-hander struck four. --Field Level Media

Guardians win third straight over 1st-place Tigers after 4-run 10th inning
May 25 - Kyle Manzardo and Angel Martinez each hit RBI doubles in the top of the 10th inning to lift the Cleveland Guardians to a 7-5 win over the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park on Saturday. Cleveland has won the first three of the four-game series. Bo Naylor had a sacrifice fly and pinch-hitter Nolan Jones added an RBI single in the four-run 10th for Cleveland. Detroit responded in its half of the 10th, cutting the Cleveland lead to 7-5 on a 2-run double to left-center field by Gleyber Torres off Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase. But Clase stifled the Detroit rally by inducing a foulout from Colt Keith and a groundout by Riley Greene to end the game. After falling behind 3-0 in the first, Cleveland didn't allow a run until the 10th inning, and the Guardians bullpen didn't allow a hit in more than four innings of work until Torres' double in the 10th. Detroit took a 3-0 lead in the first on an RBI double by Keith and a 2-run single by Matt Vierling. Cleveland cut its deficit to 3-2 in the third on a solo home run by Naylor and an RBI single by Jose Ramirez. The score remained that way until the eighth, when Ramirez and Kyle Manzardo opened the inning with back-to-back singles off Detroit reliever Tommy Kahnle. Following a popup, Kahnle induced a ground ball to first from Martinez, but Ramirez slid in to home plate safely ahead of a throw from Detroit first basemen Spencer Torkelson to tie the game at 3-3. Ramirez and Manzardo each had two hits for the Guardians, and starter Luis Ortiz allowed three earned runs on four hits and five walks in his five innings of work. In his first start following a stint on the disabled list, Casey Mize allowed one run on four hits and a walk, striking out six, in his five innings of work. --Field Level Media

Logan Allen, Guardians shut out Brewers on 3-hitter
May 14 - Logan Allen was solid through six innings in a 2-0 win for the Cleveland Guardians over the visiting Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday. Allen (2-2) struck out six and allowed three hits and one walk for the Guardians, who shut out Milwaukee for a second straight game. Emmanuel Clase tossed a perfect ninth for his ninth save of the season. Right-handers Matt Festa and Hunter Gaddis each pitched one scoreless, hitless inning of middle relief for the Guardians, whose pitchers combined to strike out 10 batters. Brewers starting pitcher Quinn Priester (1-2) gave up one run on three hits and two walks and fanned three in five innings. Cleveland took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. With two outs, Jose Ramirez connected on a sinker down the middle and sent it into the right field deck for his seventh home run of the season. Kyle Manzardo's RBI triple made it 2-0 in the eighth inning, scoring Ramirez, who had reached on an infield single. Milwaukee center fielder Jackson Chourio tried to catch Manzardo's shot on his backhand but missed, leaving the ball to roll deep as Christian Yelich came over from left to retrieve it. Allen held the struggling Milwaukee offense at bay through the first four innings. After Chourio led off the game with a single, the lefty retired 13 straight batters before Brice Turang grounded a one-out single into center field in the fifth. Chourio doubled to lead off the sixth, but the Brewers couldn't capitalize. Allen struck out Daz Cameron and William Contreras grounded out before Allen fanned Yelich to end the inning. The Guardians didn't fare much better at the plate after Ramirez's homer, with just one hit -- a double from Steven Kwan in the third -- through the next four frames. But they finally got their bats to connect in the bottom of the sixth inning off left-handed reliever Tyler Alexander. Angel Martinez led off with a single to center and, after Kwan struck out, Daniel Schneemann singled to give Cleveland two on with one out. That ended Alexander's brief outing, with Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy opting to bring in righty Nick Mears to put the switch-hitting Ramirez on his left side, where he's batting .266 compared .379 on the right. Ramirez popped out to shortstop and Manzardo followed with a flyout to end the threat. --Field Level Media
