Montréal to host World Congress of Nephrology: $14M in spinoffs for the metropolis Français

MONTRÉAL, /CNW/ - More than 4,500 congress-goers are expected, 12,600 overnight stays and an estimated $14 million in economic spinoffs: the arrival of the World Congress of Nephrology (WCN) in 2028 promises to be a high point—for the local economy as well as for health research in Québec—and illustrates once again the effectiveness of the collaboration between the Palais des congrès de Montréal, Tourisme Montréal and their partners in attracting major international events. But the impact of this event goes well beyond the numbers. WCN 2028 will offer Québec and Canadian research an international showcase that will foster scientific partnerships, knowledge transfer and the mobilization of the next medical generation. It's also an opportunity to advance awareness of kidney disease, which affects millions of people around the world. WCN 2028 received financial support from the International Convention Attraction Fund (ICAF). Funded by the Canadian government and run by Destination Canada, the ICAF supports bids by Canadian cities that wish to host major international conventions, with the goal of positioning Canada as a premier destination for hosting business events. An anticipated return to Montréal since 2021 Initially planned in Montréal in 2021, following a winning bid led by Dr. Tomoko Takano, professor in the Department of Medicine at McGill University, Palais des congrès Ambassador and current president of the Canadian Society of Nephrology, WCN 2021 had to be held virtually due to the pandemic. The choice of Montréal to host the WCN is no coincidence. The metropolis, and Québec, have made fundamental contributions to the field of nephrology—historically, clinically and in terms of research. Institutions like McGill University, Université de Montréal and the various CIUSSS networks have long been recognized for their excellence in the field. This choice not only crowns years of concerted efforts between the Canadian Society of Nephrology and the Société québécoise de néphrologie (Québec Society of Nephrology), for both the 2021 and 2028 congresses, but is, above all, a testament to the renewed trust of the International Society of Nephrology in the local and national organizing committee. Quotes "WCN 2028 will promote Québec expertise and research, while generating direct and lasting spinoffs for Montréal. Our city is home to a community of researchers who make important breakthroughs in several fields, and nephrology is one of the medical specialties in which Montréal excels. Contributing to the promotion of local scientific knowhow and Québec's societal progress is an essential aspect of the Palais des congrès de Montréal's mission." – Emmanuelle Legault, President and CEO of the Palais des congrès de Montréal « We are honoured to welcome the international nephrology community back to Montreal for WCN 2028. This congress represents a unique opportunity to highlight Canadian leadership in kidney care, showcase groundbreaking research, and foster global collaboration. Together with our partners at the Société québécoise de néphrologie (SQN), we look forward to hosting an inclusive, impactful, and forward-thinking event that will inspire innovation and strengthen our shared commitment to improving kidney health worldwide. » – Dr. Tomoko Takano, President of the Canadian Society of Nephrology "Hosting the World Congress of Nephrology in Montréal confirms once again our metropolis's leadership as a destination par excellence for major international scientific events. This type of congress contributes to strengthening Montréal's strategic position as a knowledge and innovation hub. Beyond the major economic benefits, it's also our ability to mobilize talent from here and beyond that resonates globally. We are delighted to have collaborated with the Palais in hosting this event!" – Yves Lalumière, President and CEO of Tourisme Montréal About the Palais des congrès de Montréal A creative solutions centre and a showcase for the city's spirit and expertise, the Palais des congrès de Montréal has been promoting and hosting large-scale events since 1983. The Palais des congrès de Montréal and the Fonds de recherche du Québec strengthen their partnership Français

MONTRÉAL, July 22, 2025 /CNW/ - The Palais des congrès de Montréal and the Fonds de recherche du Québec (FRQ) are proud to announce the renewal of their framework partnership agreement for another three years, until 2028. This extension marks an important step in a solid collaboration that dates back to 2019 and was renewed for the first time in 2022. Signed by Emmanuelle Legault, President and CEO of the Palais des congrès de Montréal, and Rémi Quirion, Chief Scientist of Québec and President and CEO of the FRQ, this agreement consolidates an essential strategic alliance for promoting science and innovation in Québec. It reflects a shared desire to strengthen the impact of Québec research by increasing its connection with the business events and economic development ecosystem. An agreement to promote research This partnership seeks to encourage greater ties between the research and business communities—through a stronger collaboration between the two organizations, the dissemination of knowledge and the promotion of research—by hosting and showcasing major scientific events. It is based on a few key focus areas: financial support for FRQ initiatives, shared visibility, hosting the FRQ's annual forum, and collaboration to attract major scientific conferences. The Palais and the FRQ are delighted to pursue this partnership and its concrete benefits for research, the economy and society in Québec. Rémi Quirion's key contribution This renewal is of particular importance as Rémi Quirion, world-renowned neuroscientist and Chief Scientist of Québec since 2011, prepares to leave his position in the fall. The first to hold the position, he marked Québec's scientific landscape by building bridges between the research community, government and society, and moulding the FRQ around multidisciplinarity, innovation and science in French. Concluding this renewed agreement is one his final actions in this position, and is a testament to his leadership in advancing the role of science in Québec society. Quotes "For the Palais, partnering with the Fonds de recherche du Québec is a way of supporting what drives progress in a society: knowledge, exchange and innovation. For several years, the FRQ has been showing us the extent to which science can enrich public dialogue and advance our society. It's a privilege to be able to contribute, in our own way, to this movement. I also salute the crucial contribution of Rémi Quirion who, as Chief Scientist of Québec and the President and CEO of FRQ, brought a human-centred and mobilizing vision to science. His action will have a lasting impact on how science dialogues with society." – Emmanuelle Legault, President and CEO of the Palais des congrès de Montréal "For several years, the Fonds de recherche du Québec and the Palais des congrès de Montréal have pursued a fruitful partnership that has promoted research through international scientific conferences. I'm thrilled that this agreement has been renewed and will support other researchers in organizing scientific conferences at the Palais, and generating outstanding economic and intellectual spinoffs." – Rémi Quirion, Chief Scientist of Québec and President and CEO of the Fonds de recherche du Québec About the Palais des congrès de Montréal A creative solutions centre and a showcase for the city's spirit and expertise, the Palais des congrès de Montréal has been promoting and hosting large-scale events since 1983. With one of the highest customer satisfaction rates in the world, the Palais actively contributes to the international reputation of Montréal, the top host city for international events in America for nine years in a row. About the Fonds de recherche du Québec Reporting to the Minister of Economy, Innovation and Energy, the mission of the Fonds de recherche du Québec is to ensure the strategic and coherent development of Québec research and to support it financially, to support the training of researchers, to establish the partnerships necessary to achieve its mission, to support the mobilization of knowledge and to promote research and science in French in natural sciences and engineering, health sciences, social sciences and humanities, arts and letters. Business Tourism: Montréal once again crowned North America's number one destination Français

MONTRÉAL, May 29, 2025 /CNW/ - For the ninth consecutive year, Montréal has been crowned the best destination in North America for hosting international association events, according to the prestigious annual rankings of the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), which classified more than 11,000 international gatherings held around the world in 2024. Thanks to its expertise and sustained commitment to innovation and excellence in business tourism, Montréal once again outranked major North American metropolises like Toronto, Washington, DC, Vancouver and Chicago. The city also maintained its second position in the Americas, behind Buenos Aires, and preserved its enviable position in the global Top 30 (28th in the world), surpassing cities like Sydney, Rio de Janeiro, Dubai and Munich. This renewed leadership is the fruit of an effective collaboration between the Palais des congrès de Montréal and Tourisme Montréal, and the exceptional synergy of the sector's key players—hotels, restaurants, universities and event partners. Together, these dynamic forces have contributed to positioning and maintaining Montréal as a first-rate destination for major international gatherings. Among the key events in 2024 was the 3rd Joint Congress on Evolutionary Biology, with 2,138 participants, the One Young World Summit 2024, which drew 1,900 young leaders from around the world, and the 32nd Conference on Intelligent Systems for Molecular Biology (ISMB), with its 1,600 delegates. In all, 70 international events were held in Montréal, enabling it to maintain first place on the podium in 2024. Above all, these events were wonderful opportunities to share knowledge and build collaborations with experts the world over: a precious contribution to Montréal research in key sectors such as life sciences, health and information technologies. This ninth triumph for Montréal in the ICCA rankings is not simply a record of achievement, it's a tangible reflection of Montréal's dynamic business tourism and its capacity to attract large-scale international events. An ecosystem whose strategic vision and collective creativity showcase our metropolis on the international scene. Quotes "Montréal's ranking as the top destination in North America for nine years in a row is the fruit of a strategic collaboration between the Palais des congrès, Tourisme Montréal, and leading researchers in Montréal, whose expertise and commitment make all the difference. By choosing our metropolis, international associations are not simply selecting a place, they're allying with an ecosystem that enriches their event and amplifies their participants' experience." – Emmanuelle Legault, President and CEO of the Palais des congrès de Montréal "Each year, our teams work hard to process hundreds of files, organize site inspections and confirm thousands of overnight stays. Business tourism constitutes a major lever for the metropolis, both economically and in terms of promoting academic excellence and research. The ICCA's multiple recognitions are an honour, and I commend the exceptional work of our teams, who contribute tirelessly to making Montréal shine on the international stage." – Yves Lalumière, President and CEO of Tourisme Montréal About the Palais des congrès de Montréal A creative solutions centre and a showcase for the city's spirit and expertise, the Palais des congrès de Montréal has been promoting and hosting large-scale events since 1983.
