Nonstick pans face potential ban in New York amid health concerns

Some lawmakers in New York state are looking to ban nonstick pans in the Empire State. Senate Bill S1767 would prohibit the manufacture, sale and use of cookware containing polytetrafluorethylene, which is commonly known as Teflon. Teflon is also a member of PFAS. These are known as "forever chemicals" because they take hundreds – or even thousands – of years to break down in the environment. The chemical coating is commonly used on cookware to make it "nonstick." The bill would ban Teflon cookware – including, but not limited to, pots, pans, skillets, grills, cooking utensils and cooking appliances. The Make America Healthy Again Commission, chaired by U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., recently released a report assessing chronic diseases, particularly those suffered by children. In the MAHA report, PFAS are tied to a harmful impact on children's health. The report notes that "high levels of certain types of PFAS exposure [have] been associated with a variety of health effects, including immune suppression and changes in cholesterol in children." "It is also possible for very small amounts of PFAS to enter foods through food packaging, processing and cookware," writes the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) on its site. The FDA authorizes certain PFAS in cookware and food packaging. "Because exposure to some types of PFAS has been linked to serious health effects, we are working to better understand PFAS in foods," says the FDA. Steve Burns of the Cookware Sustainability Alliance, a nonprofit organization, told Fox News Digital his group has been meeting with many members of the New York state Senate and Assembly. "We've presented that the nonstick coating material used on cookware is the same exact material used to coat a pacemaker and has been approved for use on both products by the U.S. FDA for over 60 years." "The coating is a well-studied, completely stable and inert material that has been shown for decades to be safe, non-toxic and most importantly not water-soluble," he said. "Several other states are following the science for nonstick cookware, and we continue to encourage New York State lawmakers to do the same." In 2022, Australian researchers said that just one surface crack on a Teflon-coated pan could release around 9,100 plastic particles. "Given the fact [that] PFAS [are] a big concern, these Teflon microparticles in our food might be a health concern, [which] needs investigating because we don't know much about these emerging contaminants," University of Newcastle researcher Dr. Cheng Fang – one of the study's authors – said in a release from Flinders University. Fox News Digital reached out to the FDA for comment.

Upstate GOP lawmaker pushing bill to allow hands-free gas pumps in New York — joining rest of United States

New Yorkers might finally be able to go hands-free at the gas pump if one upstate lawmaker gets his way. State Sen. Joe Griffo (R-Onedia) has introduced a bill to greenlight the use of clips to hold open gas pump nozzles throughout the Empire State — devices already legal in the country's 49 other states. Griffo said he sponsored the legislation after investigating the matter following complaints from constituents. 'This bill would bring New York State in line with the rest of the country, [and] protect the elderly and other New Yorkers by limiting their exposure to harsh and potentially dangerous weather conditions when pumping gas, and [it would] rein in government overreach,' Griffo said in a statement to The Post Saturday. The bill, introduced April 15, will be 'supported by many, especially given advances in pump technology and station safety features.' New York's fire code has not allowed gas clips since the early 1980s, when self-service pumps were first approved. There were concerns then that the devices could fail and allow gas to overflow out of a vehicle, but the worries have been unwarranted based on use in other states. Griffo has compared the gas clip-rules to government overreach, limiting the number of gallons per minute that flow through showerheads and other appliances, such as dishwashers, washing machines and toilets. President Donald Trump signed an executive order last month calling for an immediate end to water pressure regulations implemented by former Presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama, touting the action will make 'America's Showers Great Again' — and keep his signature blond hair 'beautiful.'

From Broadway to blackjack: Exploring the entertainment side of New York online casinos

From Broadway stages to blackjack tables, New York continues to redefine what entertainment means. Its online casinos offer a compelling fusion of glamour, interaction, and innovation, proof that even in the digital age, the Empire State still knows how to put on a show. New York is a city where dreams are made—where Broadway lights dazzle, jazz echoes through underground clubs, and iconic landmarks create a living stage of culture. But beyond the theater curtains and gallery walls, a new form of entertainment is gaining momentum: online casinos. While gambling might traditionally conjure images of Atlantic City or Las Vegas, New York's online casino scene is bringing a fresh, vibrant edge to digital wagering—infused with the same flair and excitement that defines the city itself. Let's take a tour from the spotlight of Times Square to the virtual blackjack tables, exploring how New York's online casinos are becoming a dynamic hub of entertainment. The Cultural Crossroads of Entertainment Broadway has long been the heartbeat of New York's cultural life. With world-famous productions and powerhouse performances, it's an experience rooted in passion, precision, and storytelling. Interestingly, online casinos in New York are taking cues from this tradition, turning gameplay into a narrative experience rather than just a sequence of bets. Players looking to explore casino options will find that many platforms now feature live dealer games hosted by engaging personalities in professionally designed studios. These aren't your average card dealers; they're part performer, part host, making the experience feel more like an interactive show. With theatrical lighting, real-time interaction, and high-definition streaming, playing live blackjack or roulette can feel just as immersive as watching a live show on 42nd Street. A Night In, But Never Boring New Yorkers are known for having packed schedules and diverse tastes. Whether you're a foodie, a sports fanatic, or a theater enthusiast, the city caters to every interest—and so do its online casinos. The best platforms offer an entertainment buffet of slot games with themes inspired by everything from musical productions to famous film franchises. Want a slot game that channels the glitz of old Hollywood or the mystery of a noir thriller? You got it. Prefer something whimsical with Broadway-style animation and soundtracks? That's there too. Themed games elevate the entertainment factor, turning online gambling into more than a numbers game. It becomes storytelling, engagement, and an escape from the everyday—all from the comfort of your apartment. Music, Mood, and Multisensory Experience The fusion of entertainment in New York's online casino scene goes beyond visuals. Developers now understand the power of audio-visual synchronization, creating games with carefully composed soundtracks, voiceovers, and atmospheric effects. For instance, some New York-based platforms feature slots with jazz or hip-hop backgrounds, nodding to the city's musical heritage. Others incorporate ambient city sounds, like subway rumbles and honking cabs, to create an immersive experience that feels uniquely New York. The goal is to turn gameplay into a full-sensory adventure, much like attending a concert or immersive art exhibit. A Social Scene Without the Dress Code Part of New York's nightlife appeal is its social energy—mingling with strangers, shared experiences, and the buzz of something always happening. Online casinos are recreating this vibe with social gaming features that bring players together in real time. Multiplayer poker rooms, leaderboards, and chat functions let players connect and compete just like they would at a Manhattan poker table or a high-rise lounge. Some apps even offer virtual reality rooms where avatars socialize while placing bets, creating a hybrid between gaming and digital networking. It's nightlife in your pajamas—no bouncer required. Celebrity and Brand Collaborations Just as Broadway thrives on star power, online casinos are tapping into celebrity collaborations to boost entertainment value. Several platforms have partnered with famous musicians, athletes, or media brands to create exclusive content. Imagine playing a slot game developed with the style of a Broadway choreographer or a blackjack table with commentary from a former Yankees player. These partnerships bring added excitement and personalization, much like seeing your favorite star take the stage at the Lincoln Center. Gamification Meets the New York Hustle New Yorkers love a good challenge, and online casinos are capitalizing on this spirit of competition with gamification elements. Players can now complete missions, unlock achievements, and climb VIP levels—all while enjoying their favorite games. Some platforms offer loyalty programs modeled like a Broadway season, where players unlock access to 'premium performances' (exclusive games or tournaments) the more they play. This blend of gaming and performance art keeps users entertained while rewarding their consistency, just like a season pass at your favorite theater. Responsible Fun in a Regulated Market Amid all the fun and flair, New York's online casinos are also committed to maintaining a safe and responsible entertainment environment. State regulations require operators to implement tools like deposit limits, session reminders, and self-exclusion options to ensure that users stay in control. Additionally, many platforms partner with responsible gambling organizations and offer educational resources, mirroring the city's commitment to well-rounded cultural and social growth. The Future of Digital Entertainment in the Empire State The future of New York's online casino scene looks promising, and increasingly integrated with other sectors of entertainment. With advances in augmented reality (AR) and interactive streaming, we may soon see crossover experiences like: Virtual Broadway-style performances during gaming breaks AR overlays that project 3D dealers into your living room In-game trivia contests about NYC history or pop culture As boundaries between entertainment, gaming, and technology continue to blur, New York's online casinos are uniquely positioned to lead the charge. Conclusion From Broadway stages to blackjack tables, New York continues to redefine what entertainment means. Its online casinos offer a compelling fusion of glamour, interaction, and innovation, proof that even in the digital age, the Empire State still knows how to put on a show. So whether you're placing a bet or taking a bow, the curtain's up—and New York's entertainment scene is ready to wow, both onstage and online. Photo by Andrea Piacquadio from Pexels

New York Distilleries Are The Subject Of A New Tourism Driven App

The New York State Distillers Guild has released a new app connecting users to distilleries ... More including Black Button Distilling in Rochester. New York distilleries have been forging ahead as an industry in the Empire State and a new app is providing suggestions for making a trip out of seeing them. The New York State Distillers Guild has released the NY Distillery Trails app, a user-friendly guide to visiting the state's distilleries through suggested itineraries and category searches. While producing gin, vodka, whiskey and other spirits, distilleries can also play an important role in promoting visitation. Many have tasting rooms open to the public and may offer site tours. Also, they are heavily based in popular regions, including New York City, the Catskills and the Finger Lakes. 'We didn't realize that we became tourist destinations,' said Brian Facquet, the guild's president. 'When people come in and stay in New York, whether it's the Hudson Valley or near Niagara Falls, they look for things to do, and we are generally the things to do.' Iron Smoke Distillery in Fairport is among the over 200 distilleries throughout New York. According to Facquet, who is also the founder and head distiller of Do Good Spirits in Roscoe, the app evolved from distilleries often answering questions from visitors on what to see, do and eat. Facquet explained that New York distillery employees are similar to concierges in referring visitors not only to local sights but also fellow distilleries. Developed with Visit Widget, the NY Distillery Trails app follows another accomplishment. In 2024, New York State officials passed legislation that permits distilleries to offer direct to consumer shipping. As of April 1, 2025, New York State is home to 239 licensed distilleries, including 217 craft distillers—a category that includes farm and micro distilleries. Buffalo Distilling Company is among the over 200 distilleries operating in New York State. 'Distilleries are a powerful engine for economic development, agriculture and tourism in New York,' explained William Crowley, executive deputy commissioner for the New York State Liquor Authority. They source local ingredients from New York farmers and create local supply chains supporting the state's agricultural industry. They also provide employment opportunities. 'From a tourism standpoint, craft distilleries have become destinations in their own right,' added Crowley. "These businesses are not just making spirits—they're strengthening communities, preserving rural economies, and enriching the state's culinary and cultural identity.' Many New York distilleries, including Second Act Spirits in Amsterdam, have tasting rooms. With the NY Distillery Trails app, users can search for distilleries and their products and locations and build a custom itinerary or click on pre-set routes. 'New York's distilleries are spread so far and wide, so a consumer can go in and use our can go in and select a region they're looking to go visit,' said Facquet. The Empire State also has designated wine and beer trails, so the NY Distillery Trails app provides a similar self-guided trail to follow along. 'You can go and pick and choose what's right for you,' said Facquet. Learn more about New York distilleries via the free NY Distillery Trails app. Download the app for iOS here or Google Play here.

More polling problems for this blue state Democrat governor facing re-election next year

Democratic New York Gov. Kathy Hochul's approval ratings are holding slightly in positive territory, but a new poll indicates a majority of New Yorkers would still prefer someone else to win the 2026 election for governor in the Empire State. A Siena College poll released on Tuesday also suggests that Rep. Elise Stefanik is the polling frontrunner among three major Republicans considering runs for the GOP gubernatorial nomination, in the race to challenge Hochul next year. According to the poll, which was conducted May 12-15, 36% of registered voters in New York state said they would vote to re-elect Hochul to a second four-year term, with a majority (55%) saying they wanted someone else. It is a 10-point negative movement for Hochul compared to Siena's April survey, when 39% of those questioned said they were prepared to vote to re-elect the governor and 48% who wanted someone else. Fifty-one percent of Democrats surveyed in the new poll said at this early point in the 2026 election cycle they are prepared to re-elect Hochul, with 38% of Democrats saying they want "someone else." The percentage of voters who prefer another candidate jumps to 64% among independents and 82% among Republicans in blue state New York. "Even more Republicans – 82% up from 68% last month – and independents – 64% up from 55% – prefer 'someone else' to be the next governor, while a small majority of Democrats, 51%, say they are prepared to reelect her," Siena College pollster Steven Greenberg said. Hochul, who at the time was the state's lieutenant governor, in August 2021 was sworn in as New York's first female governor, after three-term Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo resigned in disgrace amid multiple scandals. She defeated then-Rep. Lee Zeldin by just over six points in 2022 to win a full four-year term steering New York. Zeldin's showing was the best by a Republican gubernatorial nominee in blue-state New York since then-GOP Gov. George Pataki won re-election to a third term in 2002. In July of last year, Hochul announced her intention to run for re-election in 2026. The governor's approval ratings in the new poll are slightly above water, at 50% approval and 46% disapproval, while her favorable rating is just underwater, at 44% favorable and 46% unfavorable. The poll was conducted after the governor and the legislature reached final agreement on a $254 billion budget, which includes provisions for tax cuts, increased benefits and investments in various areas like education and healthcare. When asked whether issues the governor touted in the budget – inflation rebate checks, middle-class tax cuts, free public school meals, and increasing the child tax credit – will make New York more affordable, the poll indicates 52% said a lot or somewhat, with 43% saying not very much or not at all. The poll indicates Hochul continues to hold a wide lead over her two potential Democratic primary challengers. Forty-six percent of Democrats say they would support Hochul for their party's gubernatorial nomination, compared to 12% for Lt. Gov. Antonio Delgado and 10% for Rep. Ritchie Torres. "Two potential Hochul rivals for the Democratic nomination for governor next year – Delgado and Torres –remain largely unknown to a majority of voters and a majority of Democrats," Greenberg said. In the race for the GOP gubernatorial nomination, 35% of Republican voters said they would support Stefanik, the six-term GOP representative from upstate New York. Stefanik, who is part of the House Republican leadership and a strong supporter and ally of President Donald Trump, has said she is seriously considering a run for governor. Republican Rep. Mike Lawler, who represents a swing congressional district in suburban New York City and who is also eyeing a campaign for governor, grabbed 22% support in the poll. Nassau County executive Bruce Blakeman, another major Trump ally and potential gubernatorial candidate, was at 11%. Trump stands at 40% approval and 57% disapproval among New York State voters, according to the poll, with his favorable rating at 38%-59%. Greenberg noted that "81% of Democrats disapprove of the job Trump is doing as president, while 82% of Republicans approve, and independents are closely divided." The survey had an overall sampling error of plus or minus 4.3 percentage points.
