New EPFO Feature: Your Face Is Enough To Activate And Manage Your Account!

Last Updated: From August 2025, EPFO members can create and activate their UAN with face recognition on the Umang app, making PF access quicker, simpler and error-free Great news for millions of Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) members: from August 1, 2025, creating and activating your Universal Account Number (UAN) will be easier than ever. By simply scanning your face using the Umang app, you can now complete the entire process with greater convenience and accuracy. The UAN is a unique identifier essential for withdrawing PF funds, checking balances, or updating your information. Three New Services Now Available On Umang App EPFO has launched three new services via the Umang app: Create and instantly activate a new UAN Activate an already created but inactive UAN Use your active UAN through facial recognition technology To use these services, all you need is your Aadhaar card and the Umang app, which is freely available on the Google Play Store. This enables members to manage their PF accounts entirely on their smartphones without requiring any assistance. Moreover, companies can also utilise the app to create UANs and download UAN cards in PDF format, streamlining their administrative processes. Open the Umang app and select the 'UAN Allotment and Activation' option. Enter your Aadhaar number and the mobile number linked to it. Provide your consent and then click 'Send OTP'. After entering the OTP received on your phone for verification, you may be asked to download the Aadhaar Face RD app if it's not already installed. Next, select the face recognition option; the app's camera will scan your face much like the DigiYatra system used at airports. When the green border appears on your screen, indicating a successful match with your Aadhaar data, your UAN will be generated and sent via SMS to your registered mobile number. Eliminating Errors And Enhancing Convenience This new facility represents a significant relief for employees. Previously, companies were responsible for submitting employee data to EPFO for UAN creation, often leading to errors in names, mobile numbers, and other personal details. The introduction of facial recognition technology eliminates these mistakes, ensuring a smoother and more accurate process. Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya praised this as a major digital advancement for employees. Growing Adoption And Activation Rates Expected In the financial year 2024-25, 1.27 crore UANs were created, but only 35% of these were activated. This lag has posed challenges for many employees in accessing their provident fund benefits. The new technology is expected to encourage more members to activate their UANs promptly, saving time and making PF-related services more accessible and reliable. The Bigger Picture: A Boost To Digital India This initiative is part of EPFO's ongoing efforts to digitise its services and simplify employee benefits management. By leveraging biometric technology and mobile apps, EPFO aims to bring greater transparency and efficiency to the process, helping employees take control of their retirement savings effortlessly. view comments First Published: August 05, 2025, 13:13 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. EPFO rule: UAN to be generated only via Aadhaar-based face authentication; check details

The Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has announced that the allotment and generation of Universal Account Number (UAN) will be done only through the Aadhaar-based Face Authentication Technology (FAT) in the UMANG App. The new rule came into force on August 1, 2025. However, the existing process of generating UAN through the employer will continue in exceptional cases, such as for international workers and citizens of Nepal and Bhutan. A circular dated July 30, 2025, invoked a previous EPFO circular dated April 8, 2025, where three EPFO facilities for employees/ members were introduced in the UMANG app by leveraging the Face Authentication Technology. 1. Allotment of UAN and activation 2. UAN activation for existing UANs 3. Face authentication service for existing activated UANs To avail this facility, EPFO subscribers are meant to download the UMANG app and the Aadhaar Face RD App from the Play Store. Notably, the above facility can be availed by the members themselves using their mobile phones without having to speak to the employer. Meanwhile, this facility is also available for downloading the e-UAN card PDF for handing over to the employer for onboarding with EPFO. Members using Face Authentication Technology would accrue benefits, including foolproof validation of Aadhaar data, as the user's data is pre-populated directly from the Aadhaar database, and completion of the UAN activation process during UAN generation itself. There would be no requirement for initiating the UAN activation process afresh. By using this facility, members gain immediate access to EPFO services such as passbook viewing, KYC updates, claim submission, etc. To access any UAN-related service, members must have access to the following: • Access to the Aadhaar-linked mobile number for verification of one-time password (OTP). • Aadhaar Face RD App for face authentication These are the steps to follow to get UAN allotment. 1. Open Umang and go to 'UAN allotment and activation'. 2. Now you need to enter the Aadhaar number, mobile number and check the consent checkbox for Aadhaar validation. 3. You can now tap 'send OTP'. A. Install the Aadhaar Face RD App if prompted. B. Enter the OTP sent to your mobile. 4. System checks if Aadhaar is already linked to a UAN: A. If yes: You'll be notified. B. If no: Proceed to Face Authentication. 5. Here you can opt for Face authentication: a. Check the consent box. b. Tap Face Authentication. c. The system will perform the face scan. 6. System fetches details and generates a new UAN. 7. Finally, UAN is sent to your registered mobile number via SMS. For personal finance updates, visit here

The benefits of it would be applicable to jobs created between August 1, 2025 and July 31, 2027. An official release from the Labour department said, 'With an outlay of Rs 99,446 crore, the PM-VBRY aims to incentivise the creation of more than 3.5 crore jobs in the country, over a period of 2 years. Out of these, 1.92 crore beneficiaries will be first timers entering the workforce.' The scheme incentivises employers across different branches to create new jobs. 'It forms a crucial part of India's strategy to accelerate economic growth through employment-led development,' it added. The Scheme consists of two parts with Part A focused on first timers and Part B focused on employers: Part A: Incentive to first-timers Targeting first-time employees registered with Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), it will offer one-month Employees Provident Fund (EPF) wage up to Rs 15,000 in two instalments. Formal jobs, self-employment rising: statistics ministry

New Delhi: Formal jobs and self-employment are on the rise in India while the youth unemployment is below the global average, the statistics ministry said on Wednesday. The ministry stated that formal employment is rising steadily, with nearly 13 million net subscribers for provident fund getting added in FY25 under the Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), more than double the number in FY19. Since September 2017, more than 77.3 million net subscribers have joined, including nearly 2 million in April 2025 alone —indicating a strengthened formal workforce and greater social protection coverage, the ministry stated. A structural shift is also underway: Periodic Labour Force Survey data indicates that self-employment increased from 52.2% to 58.4%, while casual labour declined from 24.9% to 19.8%, the ministry said, adding that this reflects a move toward entrepreneurial, autonomous livelihoods, supported by government initiatives. The ministry also said Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) for individuals aged 15 years and above has increased from 49.8% in 2017–18 to 60.1% in 2023–24. During the same period, the worker-population ratio (WPR) rose from 46.8% to 58.2%, while the unemployment rate declined sharply from 6% to 3.2%. 'These indicators suggest greater absorption of the workforce into productive employment. Notably, the youth unemployment rate fell from 17.8% to 10.2%, which is lower than the global youth unemployment rate of 13.3% as per International Labour Organisation's World Employment and Social Outlook 2024,' the ministry stated. The ministry cited Reserve Bank of India's database to say total employment in the country increased from 475 million in 2017–18 to 643 million in 2023–24—an addition of 168 million jobs over six years. The ministry also said, quoting PLFS estimates, that the average daily wage for casual labourers (excluding in public works) increased from ₹ 294 in July–September 2017 to ₹ 433 in April–June 2024. The average monthly earnings of regular salaried employees rose from ₹ 16,538 to ₹ 21,103 during the same period. 'These upward trends demonstrate not only increased income levels but also enhanced job stability and quality,' the ministry said. The recent rise in agricultural employment is linked to strengthened rural activity and policy support, including ₹ 122.5 crore in funding for agri-startups—driving innovation and sustainability in the sector—it said. India's demographic dividend is being actively cultivated through targeted initiatives, which aim to bridge the gap between education and employment, the ministry said. The economy is also witnessing job growth in emerging sectors such as startups, global capability centres (GCCs), digital services and the gig economy, creating new and diverse employment opportunities for the youth, it added. India's employment narrative is one of forward momentum, not decline, it added.
