Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital trust wins prestigious award

An NHS trust has been recognised for its work supporting the Armed Forces community. Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) has received the Ministry of Defence's Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) Gold Award, the highest honour for employers supporting defence personnel. The award recognises organisations that demonstrate outstanding support for veterans, reservists, cadet force adult volunteers, and military families in the workplace. Nigel Lee, director of strategy and partnerships at SaTH, said: "We are incredibly proud to receive this award. "Veterans, reservists, cadet force adult volunteers and military families bring invaluable experience to our workforce here at SaTH and we are honoured to support and stand by them. "This award reflects our deep commitment and respect to supporting the Armed Forces community, to create a workplace where all individuals can thrive. "We're proud to stand alongside other employers who recognise the value and contribution of this community and will continue to go above and beyond in supporting them and their families." To achieve the Gold Award, organisations must offer at least 10 days of additional paid leave for reservists, have HR policies in place for veterans and cadet force adult volunteers, and actively champion defence within their networks. SaTH's efforts include signing the Armed Forces Covenant and taking part in the national Volunteer to Career programme, which helps service leavers and their families explore roles within the NHS. Philip Sinclair, defence relationship manager for the West Midlands Reserve Forces and Cadets Association, said: "We offer our sincere congratulations to The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust for their exemplary commitment to supporting the Armed Forces community. "Their leadership in fostering an inclusive and supportive workplace sets a high standard for employers across the region." This year's ERS Gold Award winners are recognised for values-led leadership and for building more inclusive, resilient, and dynamic organisations. The official presentation ceremony took place at Lilleshall House on July 23, 2025.

Carlisle United's Community Sports Trust have received top recognition from the Ministry of Defence. The CST have been awarded the MoD's Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Award. It is the highest accolade for employers supporting the Armed Forces Community, and sees the Community Sports Trust at Brunton Park receive the gold award for the first time, having been awarded bronze in 2018 and then silver last year. The award recognises the CST's work with events such as their weekly sessions for veterans, and their involvement in this summer's Armed Forces Day at Brunton Park. James Tose, the Community Sports Trust's chief executive, said: 'Everyone at Carlisle United Community Sports Trust is delighted to receive the Ministry of Defence Gold Employer Scheme Award in recognition of the services and support we offer veterans in our community. "I am immensely proud that Teresa Mulholland and Ryan Godderidge are getting the reward for their hard work, having created a safe space for our service veterans here at Carlisle United." Teresa Mulholland, the CST's director of governance, safeguarding, EDI and veterans co-ordinator, added: 'This accolade reflects the dedication of our team, partners, and especially the veterans we support. From Bronze in 2018, to Silver in 2024, and now Gold in 2025, it's been an incredible journey. "Our weekly veteran sessions, monthly breakfasts, and collaboration on Armed Forces Day 2025 all demonstrate the strength of our provision. Thank you to the Ministry of Defence for recognising our commitment." The CST hold sessions for veterans on Wednesdays mornings and Thursday evenings, offering exercise and social opportunities, as well as monthly breakfast meetings on Wednesdays. 'These initiatives help to assist veterans in transitioning to civilian life and foster community connections,' the CST say.

Newport council recognised for armed forces support

Newport City Council has renewed its gold award status through the Ministry of Defence's Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS), which honours employers who actively support defence personnel and promote the value of the UK armed forces. The award was presented during a recent reception at the Senedd celebrating Reserves' Day, part of UK Armed Forces Week. Councillor Mark Spencer, cabinet member for communities and sport and the council's armed forces and veterans champion, said: "Newport City Council has a long-standing and established tradition of supporting our employees who have served their country and those who still do as reserves. "To maintain our gold award, we had to show our commitment in several ways including signing the Armed Forces Covenant. "We first did this in 2012 and then reaffirmed our support in 2016 and 2023 when we hosted National Armed Forces Day." The council was also recognised for its forces-friendly recruitment policies and proactive support for reservists and Cadet Force volunteers. Mr Spencer said the council regularly takes part in or helps organise events to honour service personnel, including the recent flag raising at the Civic Centre to mark Armed Forces Week. He said: "The council has always held our forces in high esteem, both veterans and those still serving."

We felt it was only right to help support military families in any way we can, and I am delighted that we have been able to do so over the last couple of years through the support of the Armed Forces Covenant and the Bronze and Silver awards.' Brigadier Andy Muddiman and Stephanie Grieve, Associate Director Scullion LAW. The Silver Award, received in October 2024, is given to UK employers who go the extra mile to support those who serve or have served. Scullion LAW was recognised not only for its specialist Military Law services but for championing a military-friendly workplace, offering flexible working arrangements and a minimum of five days' additional leave for reservists, helping employees balance their civilian and military responsibilities. Much of the firm's continued momentum stems from Stephanie Grieve, recently promoted to Associate Director, whose work supporting military clients has earned her many 5-star reviews.
