T.N. govt. to consider drafting guidelines for housing rescued bonded labourers, says Minister
Over 700 survivors of bonded labour from across Tamil Nadu gathered in Chennai on August 14 for the 'Empowered to be Free' event held to honour women and children freed from bonded labour.
Organised by the National Adivasi Solidarity Council (NASC) and the Released Bonded Labourers' Association (RBLA), the event recognised the resilience of survivors and expressed gratitude to the Tamil Nadu government for its ongoing efforts to combat bonded labour.
During her address, Geetha Jeevan, Minister for Social Welfare and Women Empowerment, assured survivors that the 'Magalir Urimai Thogai' scheme, designed specifically for disadvantaged women, would be accessible through the 'Ungaludan Stalin' scheme with relevant documents. The Minister also promised to consider the request for accommodating rescued bonded labourers in social welfare homes, stating that guidelines would soon be developed, a press release stated.
Other speakers included K. Krishnan, Director of NASC, who praised the survivors' strength and acknowledged the government's role in securing justice.
