Giants' Jerar Encarnacion exits with injury after crushing 442-foot homer in win at Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH — One minute, Jerar Encarnacion was belting his second homer in as many days, providing exactly the sort of power threat the San Francisco Giants have needed all year. The next, it seemed, Encarnacion was leaving with what looked to be a hamstring injury, grabbing his leg as he crossed first base in the seventh. The outfielder had just come off the injured list on Monday and has missed 99 games while out with a broken hand and then an oblique strain. For a team struggling to score runs, a near-certain third IL stint for Encarnacion is gut-wrenching, but the Giants made do without him in a 4-2 victory over the Pirates that gave them their second road series win in a row. Encarnacion homered in the fifth, but the Giants didn't score again until the eighth, when Patrick Bailey opened the inning with a pinch-hit single, Rafael Devers drew his second walk of the day, Willy Adames singled and Matt Chapman launched a sacrifice fly. More For You Giants' new-look lineup pounds Pirates as Logan Webb notches his 10th win Ex-manager Jim Leyland's thoughts on Giants' Justin Verlander? 'I was impressed' In the ninth, the team got some superb at-bats against Dennis Santana. Jung Hoo Lee ripped a one-out double, then Dominic Smith got down 0-2 before delivering a pinch-hit RBI double down the first-base line to extend his hitting streak to 11 games. Bailey singled to send in Smith and provide a bit of padding. 'We talk about playing like we did earlier in the year, and that's what we did off the good relievers, quality at-bats,' manager Bob Melvin said. 'Obviously Dom's was huge. Bailey coming off the bench to get two hits, driving runs, that's a good recipe for us that showed up again today. It's been lacking for a little while. Hopefully it continues.' Encarnacion's likely loss still stings, especially with much of the rest of the lineup coming alive. Encarnacion's homer Wednesday, at 442 feet the second longest by a Giants hitter this season and the longest outside of Coors Field, accounted for San Francisco's first run; Adames hit the team's longest homer of the season, a 452-foot shot at Colorado on June 11. Encarnacion will get an MRI on Thursday. 'It doesn't look good,' Melvin said. 'You get hurt in spring training, you're playing catch-up all the time to get him back, now he finally gets enough at-bats and we see the type of at-bats we've been wanting from him, especially off left-handed pitching, and he's going to be down for a while now, unfortunately. Just ends up being a, so far, really tough year for him.' Giants starter Robbie Ray didn't have a perfect day, walking two to start things off and giving up one run as a result, but he limited the damage well. A double play and a strikeout helped him squirm out of the first, and the only other run off him, in the fifth, came when Isiah Kiner-Falefa singled, stole second and scored on Tommy Pham's sacrifice fly. Ray went six innings, gave up six hits, the two walks and two runs and struck out eight. José Buttó and Ryan Walker worked scoreless innings and Randy Rodriguez, coming off a blown save Monday, had a 1-2-3 ninth. Wilmer Flores, who turned 34 Wednesday, remained out of the starting lineup because of hamstring tightness, especially notable in a game against a left-handed starter. The team still believes Flores will avoid the IL, given Thursday's off day, but it's reasonable to assume there are also provisions in case he needs to miss more time and now the Giants have to consider a replacement for Encarnacion. While he's left-handed, so not necessarily a perfect match for Encarnacion or Flores, top prospect Bryce Eldridge is making a major push at Triple-A Sacramento, hitting .333 with eight homers, 24 RBIs and seven walks over his past 13 games. His 26 RBIs since July 18 are the most in the PCL. President of baseball operations Buster Posey is a big believer in promoting players when they earn it, and Eldridge is Sacramento's hottest hitter. He might not be quite ready to play first base, but Devers can serve as the lefty option at that spot and Eldridge could get at least some big-league at-bats at DH while Flores is out. It's purely speculation at this point, because the roster fit is awkward, but his hot streak makes Eldridge an exciting option. Fun to consider, if not the most realistic choice. A more likely left-handed hitting option — and he's an outfielder — is newly acquired outfielder Drew Gilbert, from the Tyler Rogers deal with the Mets. He's 6 for his first 12 with four walks and a steal at Triple-A Sacramento. The right-handed options are a pretty well-known crew: Luis Matos, Marco Luciano and Tyler Fitzgerald. The Giants aren't listing a starter for Friday's game against the Nationals at Oracle Park, but Kai-Wei Teng remains on the roster and would at this point be the man to get the bulk of the innings, even if the team uses an opener. Landen Roupp (elbow) will pitch a bullpen session in the next day or two, and if that goes well he'll make one rehab outing before returning to the rotation.

Webb stars as the Giants beat the Pirates

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Logan Webb struck out 10 in six innings, and the San Francisco Giants hit three home runs on their way to an 8-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night. Webb (10-8) allowed one run while scattering seven hits. It was his sixth double-digit strikeout game of the season. Rookie Christian Koss and Willy Adames each hit a two-run homer and Jerar Encarnacion added a solo shot off rookie Mike Burrows as San Francisco won for just the third time in 11 games. Koss opened the scoring with a drive into the left-field bleachers in the third inning. Encarnacion's blast increased the Giants' lead to 3-1 in the fourth, and Adames' 18th homer of the season made it 6-1 in the fifth. Encarnacion was playing his first game since June 15 after being sidelined by a strained left oblique. San Francisco's Patrick Bailey added a two-run single in the sixth inning. PHILLIES 5, ORIOLES 0 PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Max Kepler and Brandon Marsh homered and Taijuan Walker pitched six scoreless innings as the NL East-leading Philadelphia beat Baltimore and extended their winning streak to three games. Marsh opened the scoring in the second inning with an RBI double that scored Nick Castellanos and added a solo homer, his third in seven games, in the eighth inning. Marsh had gone 18 straight games without going deep. Kepler hit a two-run homer in the second inning, his 12th of the season, and Bryson Stott hit an RBI triple off the top of the wall in right field to score Kepler in the fourth. Walker (4-5) allowed four hits and struck out four without a walk in six innings. MIAMI (AP) — Jose Altuve and Yainer Diaz homered to help Houston Astros beat Miami. Jeremy Peña drove in two runs as AL West-leading Houston won its second straight game. AJ Blubaugh (1-1) pitched five innings of two-run ball in his first career win. Altuve hit a two-run drive off Cal Quantrill in the first for his 19th homer. Peña made it 4-1 with a two-run triple in the fourth, and Diaz hit a three-run shot in the fifth for his 16th homer. Quantrill (4-9) permitted seven runs and nine hits in 4 1/3 innings. TWINS 6, TIGERS 3 DETROIT (AP) — Luke Keaschall hit his first homer in the majors and Trevor Larnach also cleared the fences against former teammate Chris Paddack, helping Minnesota beat Detroit. The AL Central-leading Tigers lost for just the third time in nine games. The rebuilding Twins had dropped seven of their previous nine games. Keaschall was activated from the 60-day injured list earlier the day and in the eighth game of his career, he hit a two-run homer in the first inning to give Minnesota a 3-0 lead. His RBI single in a two-run fifth put the Twins ahead 6-1. Larnach's 15th homer of the season and second in two days was a solo shot that gave Minnesota a 4-1 lead in the fourth. RED SOX 6, ROYALS 2 BOSTON (AP) — Garrett Crochet scattered four hits over seven innings and Trevor Story hit a blooper into center field to break a sixth-inning tie on Tuesday night and led Boston over Kansas City. Crochet (13-4) struck out eight to win his ninth consecutive decision and help Boston win for the ninth time in 10 games. Story drove in two runs in the sixth and and added another RBI single in the three-run seventh, when the Red Sox took a 6-2 lead. Ryan Bergert (1-1) gave up two runs on two hits and two walks, striking out two in 5 2/3 innings. He walked Alex Bregman with two outs in the sixth, then Angel Zerpa came in and gave up a double to Wilyer Abreu before Story lofted one over the second baseman's head to make it 3-1. GUARDIANS 3, METS 2 NEW YORK (AP) — Steven Kwan singled home the tiebreaking run with two outs in the seventh inning, and Cleveland beat New York. Kyle Manzardo and Gabriel Arias each had an RBI single off starter Clay Holmes in the fourth as the Guardians erased an early 2-0 deficit. They won for the sixth time in seven games and improved to 18-7 since snapping a 10-game losing streak on July 7. Pete Alonso had a sacrifice fly in the first for the Mets, who have dropped seven of eight and are 1-4 on their six-game homestand. They fell 2 1/2 games behind first-place Philadelphia in the NL East. Mark Vientos doubled leading off the second and scored on Tyrone Taylor's single, but New York's offense went silent after that against starter Logan Allen and four relievers. Matt Festa (3-2) struck out two in a perfect sixth, and Cade Smith worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his fourth save. ATHLETICS 16, NATIONALS 7 WASHINGTON (AP) — Shea Langeliers homered three times and finished with five hits in his first game batting in the leadoff spot, and the Athletics pounded slumping Washington. Langeliers opened the game with a drive to center off MacKenzie Gore for his 20th homer. The 27-year-old catcher hit another leadoff shot in the fifth and the seventh. Langeliers scored four times and finished with 15 bases. He became the fourth catcher with multiple three-homer games in a career — joining Hall of Famers Johnny Bench and Gary Carter, and Travis d'Arnaud. Langeliers and d'Arnaud are the only two to hit three from the leadoff spot. JJ Bleday had four hits for the A's for the second straight game. He homered and finished with six RBIs. Darell Hernaiz also went deep, and Nick Kurtz scored four times. Brent Rooker finished with four hits and three RBIs. BREWERS 7, BRAVES 2 ATLANTA (AP) — Freddy Peralta allowed only one run in five innings, Andrew Vaughn singled in two runs in Milwaukee's four-run fourth and the Brewers beat Atlanta. Milwaukee (69-44) extended its winning streak to five games to improve Major League Baseball's best record. The NL Central-leading Brewers began the day three games ahead of the second-place Chicago Cubs. Peralta (13-5) allowed only four hits in his return to Atlanta, where he participated in All-Star Game festivities last month. Isaac Collins, who hit a three-run homer in Milwaukee's 3-1 win in Monday night's series opener, drove in two runs with two hits. RANGERS 2, YANKEES 0 ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Nathan Eovaldi pitched eight sharp innings, Rowdy Tellez blooped a two-run single on a 10-pitch at-bat in the eighth, and Texas spoiled Aaron Judge's return with a victory over New York. Judge was 0 for 3 with two strikeouts as the designated hitter after being activated from the 10-day injured list. The All-Star slugger has a tendon strain in his right elbow, and the Yankees plan to start a throwing program Wednesday to see how soon Judge can return to the outfield. The Yankees have lost five in a row, one shy of their season worst, and 19 of their past 24 road games. Anthony Volpe was the only baserunner against Eovaldi, reaching on a hustling double in the third when his soft liner landed behind shortstop Corey Seager in shallow left field.

Drive fall at Hudson Valley

WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. — Kyle Carr tossed 6.2 strong innings and the Hudson Valley Renegades held off a late Greenville rally to claim a 2–1 win Tuesday night at Heritage Financial Park in the first of a six-game series. Carr (1–4) earned his first win of the season, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out five and walking three. The left-hander's only blemish came on a solo home run by Freili Encarnacion in the fifth inning that cut the Renegades' lead to 2–1. Lefty Jorvani Moran made a rehab start for the Drive, going only 2/3 of an inning before being replaced by reliever Adam Smith to close out the first inning. Hudson Valley (35–22) scratched out single runs in the first and second innings to take an early lead. Parks Harber doubled with two outs in the first and came around to score on Coby Morales' RBI single to right. Alexander Vargas doubled home Jose Colmenares in the second off the second reliever out of the Drive bullpen Payton Tolle to make it 2–0. Tolle, the Red Sox No. 15 Prospect, was excellent in relief for Greenville (30–28), striking out eight over five innings while allowing just three hits and one run. Cooper Adams followed with two scoreless innings to keep the Drive within striking distance. Encarnacion's homer, his second of the season, came on a full count with two outs in the fifth, but Greenville couldn't generate any additional offense despite drawing four walks and being hit by two pitches. The Drive's best chance came in the eighth, when they loaded the bases with two outs. But reliever Hueston Morrill induced a popout from Nazzan Zanetello to escape the jam and then worked a clean ninth for his third save. Encarnacion reached base all three times he came to the plate, going 1-for-1 with a homer, a walk, and a hit-by-pitch. Franklin Arias and Johanfran Garcia collected the other two hits for Greenville, who went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and stranded seven on base. Colmenares led the Renegades with two hits, a walk, and a stolen base. Harber added a double and a walk, while Vargas contributed his first double of the season and an RBI. The Renegades stole three bases and left eight runners on, but their early offense and strong bullpen featuring scoreless outings from Tony Rossi and Morrill, were enough to secure the victory in front of a crowd of 1,710. Game two of the series is scheduled for Wednesday evening at Heritage Financial Park. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
