Italy and Ukraine partner on $11.9 million project to revitalize agriculture and food security in Odesa Oblast
Italy signed an agreement with Ukraine to launch the 11 million euro ($11.9 million) project, aimed at promoting sustainable agricultural development and food security in Odesa Oblast, Agriculture Minister Vitaliy Koval reported on March 19. The project will provide local farmers, breeders, and cooperatives with new tools, technologies, and sustainable irrigation systems to strengthen production and organizational capacity. "Italy confirms its support with a concrete project aimed at strengthening food security and promoting sustainable agricultural development," Italian Ambassador to Ukraine Carlo Formosa said. Koval highlighted that this marks another step toward the recovery of Ukrainian agriculture and strengthening cooperation with the EU. 'I am grateful to Italy for its continued support and joint work on food security!' Koval said on Telegram. Iceland allocates over $2 million to support Ukrainian energy sector
Iceland will allocate over 2 million euros ($2.17 million) to Ukraine's Energy Support Fund, the Energy Ministry reported on March 11. This will bring Iceland's total contributions to Ukraine's energy sector to more than 5.6 million euros ($6.09 million) thus far. According to Ukraine's Energy Ministry, Iceland made four tranches of contributions between 2023 and 2024. The funds have been used to buy equipment for energy companies in Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson regions. Herman Halushchenko, Ukraine's Energy Minister, stressed the importance of contributions like these for returning light and heat to the homes of Ukrainians, and for restoring infrastructure that was damaged by Russian attacks. 'Each contribution of partners to the Energy Support Fund of Ukraine is extremely important,' Halushchenko said. 'We are grateful to Iceland for its support and another contribution to Ukraine's energy sustainability.' The Icelandic parliament, Althing, adopted a resolution on long-term assistance for Ukraine from 2024 to 2028. The resolution aims to support the independence, sovereignty, borders, the safety of civilians, humanitarian aid, and reconstruction work in Ukraine. Italy to provide Ukraine with $13 million to restore energy infrastructure
Rome signed an agreement with Kyiv on Feb. 28 to provide Ukraine with 13 million euros ($13.5 million) directed towards the country's Energy Support Fund, Ukraine's Energy Ministry announced. The funding will be used to support "the restoration of Ukraine's energy sector," a news release from the Energy Ministry read. Russia continues to target Ukrainian energy infrastructure, testing Ukraine's resolve as the country is enduring another winter. "This assistance will allow us to procure essential equipment and strengthen the resilience of Ukraine's energy system at a time when the enemy is relentlessly attacking energy facilities," Ukraine's Deputy Energy Minister Roman Andarak said in a statement. Earlier this month, Italy an agreement with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) to launch a 2 million euro ($2.07 million) project to strengthen Ukraine's energy system, the Italian Embassy in Ukraine told the Kyiv Independent. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who took office in late 2022, has consistently supported Kyiv and pledged unwavering assistance until the war ends. Material losses from on Ukrainian energy infrastructure have amounted to "billions of dollars," according to Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko. Halushchenko said on Feb. 24 that Russia has launched more than 30 mass strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure over the three years of its full-scale invasion. Over the past three years, Russian troops have occupied territories hosting energy facilities producing 18 gigawatts (GW) of generation. The occupied facilities include hydroelectric power plants, thermal power plants, and Europe's largest nuclear power plant, stationed in Zaporizhzhia Oblast. Italy to contribute €13 million to Ukraine Energy Support Fund
Italy will contribute €13 million to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund, and the relevant agreement was signed the day before. "This assistance will allow us to purchase the necessary equipment and strengthen the resilience of the Ukrainian energy system in the face of the enemy's merciless attacks on power facilities, and Ukrainian power engineers are working around the clock to repair the damaged ones so that Ukrainians have power and heat in their homes," Andarak said. So far, the announced contributions of partners to the Energy Support Fund amount to more than €1 billion. The fund's donors include the public and private sectors from more than 30 countries.
