DBKK stepping up efforts on streetlight woes

Published on: Thursday, May 29, 2025 Published on: Thu, May 29, 2025 By: Sidney Skinner Text Size: Repairs were made to the faulty fixtures along several housing roads around Bandar Sierra. City Hall will step up efforts to check on the public lighting on several roads between Kolombong and Manggatal to ensure that that the common areas along these stretches are properly illuminated at night. This follows feedback from three road-users about the poor night-time driving experience on Jalan Kilang, Mile 6½ Jalan Tuaran and housing roads in Bandar Sierra. They provided Hotline with the pertinent details, related to their separate concerns, which were forwarded to the agency. A spokesman for the City Hall's Engineering Department said its electrical contractor was alerted to the streetlight woes along the affected roads. He said two inspections were made of Jalan Kilang over the span of two weeks recently. 'A faulty contactor in one the control panels was changed during the first check,' he said. Advertisement He explained that a 'contactor' was a type of switch for repeatedly opening and closing an electric circuit. 'When the technicians returned about 14 days later, they replaced two 150watt lanterns, two 250watt lanterns, five 250watt ballasts, six line taps and a 120metre length of a 16milimetre cable.' He said a skymaster was deployed to facilitate these repairs. A 'ballast' regulated the electrical current to the lanterns and provided sufficient voltage to start the lanterns, according to him. Given as how the lights had twice been rendered inoperative, he said, the contractor kept the road under surveillance for a period afterwards, before confirming that everything was in order. He said Jalan Kilang covered a distance of some 1.83kilometres from the roundabout on Jalan Mangga and another on Jalan Lintas Khidmat. 'Where the divider at Mile 6½ Jalan Tuaran was involved, the contractor and his team attended to a faulty contactor and Miniature Circuit Breaker (MCB) in the control panel for the lights.' 'We were made to understand that the U-turn on the main road in the Seri Warisan area had been unlit for some time.' He elaborated that a MCB prevented electrical hazards by detecting and interrupting abnormal currents and short circuits. 'A follow-up check was made three weeks later, during which time the lights were found to be out of order. 'The contractor replaced two 250watt lanterns, two 250watt ballasts and four line taps in this instance.' He said the individual kept tabs on the public lighting in this part of Jalan Tuaran on and off over the coming weeks to ensure that the section of the road near the U-turn was properly illuminated at night. On top of this, the spokesman said four service lines, three ballasts, four 'ignitors' and four lanterns were replaced in the residential area at Bandar Sierra. 'An 'ignitor' functions as a starter to increase the initial voltage to make the lanterns glow.' He said the related fixtures were found to be malfunctioning along Lorong Sierra 1/ 1A, Lorong Sierra 1A, Lorong Sierra 1A, Lorong Sierra 1B and Lorong Sierra 1/ 1B. 'All the lights on Lorong Sierra 1/ 1B, which extends for about 167metres, were found to have broken down.' He said the contractor did a day-time test, at the time, to ensure that these amenities were coming on as they should. 'He also went back after dark to determine if the road was adequately lit.' When asked how often maintenance was carried out on those streetlights under City Hall's jurisdiction, the spokesman said there was no fixed-schedule for this work. 'These amenities are attended to as and when it becomes necessary to do so.' * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Japan Unveils Urashima 8000 Underwater Drone Capable of Diving 8,000 Meters Under the Sea

The Yomiuri Shimbun The Urashima 8000 is shown to the press in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, on Monday. The Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology on Monday showed the press its newest autonomous underwater vehicle, the Urashima 8000, in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture. The submarine is about 10 meters long and capable of diving to 8,000 meters under the sea, a depth that is more than double what the previous model was capable of. After underwater cruise tests, the sub will begin full-fledged operations from next fiscal year. The vehicle can survey over 98% of Japan's exclusive economic zone. It is also expected to be used for exploring offshore natural resources. The previous model in the Urashima series can dive up to 3,500 meters under the sea and survey 45% of Japan's EEZ. Work began on a new model in 2022. The vehicle's pressure-resistant container, which is inside the hull and contains important devices, was changed from aluminum to titanium so that it can endure higher pressures. According to the agency, the Urashima 8000 boasts the deepest diving depth of any cruising AUV, or autonomous underwater vehicles that are able to navigate wide swathes of the sea. The new model also consumes less electricity and can operate underwater for about 40 hours straight. That is a more than 50% increase in time from the previous model. In its ocean floor surveys using sonar, the Urashima 8000 can scan about 100 square kilometers of seabed per dive. The agency is scheduled to conduct the underwater cruise tests over the Japan Trench off the Boso Peninsula in July and August. 'We will be able to search for seafloor deposits and check for deformation of the sea floor caused by earthquakes more efficiently,' said Takeshi Nakatani, acting group leader of the agency's Engineering Department.

City Hall to improve lighting on Tanjung Aru roads

Published on: Wednesday, May 07, 2025 Published on: Wed, May 07, 2025 By: Sidney Skinner Text Size: Only two streetlights have been erected on Jalan Rumah Pangsa 1. CITY Hall is set to improve the public lighting on eight roads around Tanjung Aru and is keeping tabs on the condition of the streetlights on five stretches around two Luyang commercial centres. This follows feedback about the break-ins which had occurred at two homes on Jalan Rumah Pangsa 1 at the first location, as well as the traffic hazards posed by the patches of darkness around Lintas Plaza and Lintas Square at the latter. The individuals, who spoke out about these irregularities, provided Hotline with the pertinent details regarding these problems. This information was forwarded to the agency. A spokesman for the agency's Engineering Department said it was in the midst of putting together the necessary paperwork to have solar lights put up along several road reserves in Tanjung Aru, including those off Jalan Rumah Pangsa 1, Jalan Rumah Pangsa 2 and Jalan Datuk Willie. 'We have received an allocation from the government to carry out this improvement,' he said. 'A check of our records shows that there are only two streetlights each on Jalan Rumah Pangsa 1, Jalan Rumah Pangsa 1 and Jalan Datuk Willie.' LOVIE of Tanjung Aru said the lack of illumination on Jalan Rumah Pangsa 1 made her uneasy about driving home at night. She has noticed that the streetlights on the road seemed to function intermittently. 'One of my neighbours highlighted the lack of illumination to City Hall at one stage, and the lights came back on again shortly afterwards,' she said. Within a few days, however, these amenities were out of order again, according to her. She said there had been several break-ins in this part of the town. 'My home was burglarised early this year, with the thieves making away with a laptop, handphone, sling bag, piggy bank, a crystal bracelet and several pieces of gold jewellery which I were presented to me on my wedding day. 'The bad hats entered through my kitchen window in the wee hours while me and my family were sleeping. Thankfully, none of us were harmed while they were looting the place.' She feared that unscrupulous parties might be taking advantage of the almost pitch black darkness on the housing road to carry out these misdeeds. Another Tanjung Aru resident, one SHANG, echoed Lovie's concerns, saying that he was a victim of home invasion in February. 'The intruder drove up in an unregistered vehicle around 4am and entered my compound. He switched off the lights in my car porch and behind my house. 'The individual also covered the spotlight in my front yard with a piece of clothing, before trying to pry open the front grill to my house.' Fortunately, he did not succeed and left without further incident, according to him. 'All this was captured on one of my neighbour's CCTVs (Closed Circuit Televisions). 'When he reported what transpired to the Police, Shang appealed to the officer, who took down these details, to consider having his colleagues patrol Jalan Rumah Pangsa 1 more often to discourage trespassers from entering other homes along the road. In the case of the streetlights in Lintas Plaza and Lintas Square, the spokesman said its electrical contractor was alerted to the breakdown of the amenities servicing both Luyang commercial centres. He said a check of these properties revealed that some of the lighting fixtures were damaged. Repairs were made shortly thereafter, with the contractor's workers changing a 60-amp contactor, a 40-amp contactor, 14 150-watt lanterns, 10 250-watt ballasts, 14 150-watt ballasts, 20 ignitors and four 'e40 holders', according to him. 'They also replaced a 120 metre length of aluminium cable with a 16milimetre diameter and a 30 metre length of a 'twinflat' line with a 2.5mm diameter,' he said. He explained that a 'contactor' was a type of switch for repeatedly opening and closing an electric circuit. A 'ballast' regulated the electrical current to the lanterns and provided sufficient voltage to start the lanterns, according to him He said an 'ignitor', meanwhile, functioned as a starter to increase the initial voltage to make the lanterns glow. 'A sky-master was deployed to facilitate efforts to have the lights restored.' He said these amenities were tested that same afternoon after they had been dealt with to confirm that they were operational. 'The contractor kept the stretch under surveillance at night for a week afterwards. During that time, he confirmed that nothing was amiss with these lights.' * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? NER adopts PQRS for replacing old tracks, maintenance

Now maintaining the railway tracks and replacing them would be much easier as Lucknow division of the Northeastern Railway (NER) has introduced a modern semi-mechanized system automatic machine called PQRS (Plasser Quick Relaying System) to replace them. 'It is being used on all the rail sections to replace old tracks with new ones in less time and using special equipment, old rail panels including sleepers are removed and new panels are installed in their place,' stated a press note from NER. It further explained that the system consists of two automated portal cranes used for track replacement. During the work the cranes are lowered onto the track which lifts the old track and installs the new panels already collected. 'A tamping machine is also installed behind the portal crane which lifts and tampers the new track. This process renews the track quickly ensuring quality so that trains can run smoothly,' said NER DRM Gaurav Agarwal and added that it was implemented by the Engineering Department of the Division. He added that in the month of April, 3.4 km of track renewal work has been done between Maskanwan and Lakh patnagar stations.
