While He Led the Class, She Plotted to Win His Heart
Braxton Imura Osei-Bonsu made a disappointing discovery after returning home to England with a law degree from Complutense University of Madrid: As an aspiring barrister, she would have to spend another year at a British law school to supplement her studies of European law with English law.
In October 2021, she begrudgingly showed up to her first class in 'English Legal Systems' at the University of Law at Newcastle University.
When she stepped into the classroom, she was pleasantly surprised. Her lecturer, Ricky Handa, looked a lot like Raymond Ablack, an actor she found very attractive in the Netflix series 'Ginny & Georgia.'
'There's no way he's my teacher,' she recalled thinking.
Ms. Osei-Bonsu, now 28, said she 'made a beeline for him.' She claimed her seat in the first row, directly in front of him, and sat there for the rest of the school year.
It was the first course Mr. Handa, 35, had ever taught. He had been working as a full-time lawyer in commercial property, but when his mother, Angela Handa, was diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer, he decided to teach for a few years so he would have time to care for her.
As for Ms. Osei-Bonsu, she had set her sights on Mr. Handa. 'I would just sit there, scheming,' she said of her time in class. ''How am I going to play this? How am I going to get his number?''
