Scottish university lures English students with ‘no strings' £1,500 bursary
A university in Edinburgh is attempting to stem its losses by luring English students with a grant that Scots are ineligible for.
Heriot-Watt University is offering a bursary worth £1,500 to every undergraduate from south of the border who accepts a place.
First-year students from England, Wales and Northern Ireland are being given three non-means-tested payments of £500 in October, February and April.
The travel-home bursaries, believed to be the first of their kind in Scotland, are meant to help pay for students to return to visit their families. However, the automatic payments come with no restrictions or scrutiny on how they can be spent.
