Is Enlivex Therapeutics (NASDAQ:ENLV) In A Good Position To Invest In Growth?
Just because a business does not make any money, does not mean that the stock will go down. For example, although software-as-a-service business lost money for years while it grew recurring revenue, if you held shares since 2005, you'd have done very well indeed. Nonetheless, only a fool would ignore the risk that a loss making company burns through its cash too quickly. Given this risk, we thought we'd take a look at whether Enlivex Therapeutics (NASDAQ:ENLV) shareholders should be worried about its cash burn. For the purposes of this article, cash burn is the annual rate at which an unprofitable company spends cash to fund its growth; its negative free cash flow. First, we'll determine its cash runway by comparing its cash burn with its cash reserves. AI is about to change healthcare. These 20 stocks are working on everything from early diagnostics to drug discovery. The best part - they are all under $10bn in marketcap - there is still time to get in early. A company's cash runway is the amount of time it would take to burn through its cash reserves at its current cash burn rate. In December 2024, Enlivex Therapeutics had US$23m in cash, and was debt-free. Importantly, its cash burn was US$13m over the trailing twelve months. That means it had a cash runway of around 22 months as of December 2024. Notably, analysts forecast that Enlivex Therapeutics will break even (at a free cash flow level) in about 5 years. That means unless the company reduces its cash burn quickly, it may well look to raise more cash. You can see how its cash balance has changed over time in the image below. Check out our latest analysis for Enlivex Therapeutics Because Enlivex Therapeutics isn't currently generating revenue, we consider it an early-stage business. So while we can't look to sales to understand growth, we can look at how the cash burn is changing to understand how expenditure is trending over time. Even though it doesn't get us excited, the 45% reduction in cash burn year on year does suggest the company can continue operating for quite some time. Clearly, however, the crucial factor is whether the company will grow its business going forward. For that reason, it makes a lot of sense to take a look at our analyst forecasts for the company . While Enlivex Therapeutics is showing a solid reduction in its cash burn, it's still worth considering how easily it could raise more cash, even just to fuel faster growth. Generally speaking, a listed business can raise new cash through issuing shares or taking on debt. Many companies end up issuing new shares to fund future growth. We can compare a company's cash burn to its market capitalisation to get a sense for how many new shares a company would have to issue to fund one year's operations. Enlivex Therapeutics has a market capitalisation of US$21m and burnt through US$13m last year, which is 62% of the company's market value. That's very high expenditure relative to the company's size, suggesting it is an extremely high risk stock. Even though its cash burn relative to its market cap makes us a little nervous, we are compelled to mention that we thought Enlivex Therapeutics' cash burn reduction was relatively promising. Shareholders can take heart from the fact that analysts are forecasting it will reach breakeven. Even though we don't think it has a problem with its cash burn, the analysis we've done in this article does suggest that shareholders should give some careful thought to the potential cost of raising more money in the future. Separately, we looked at different risks affecting the company and spotted 4 warning signs for Enlivex Therapeutics (of which 1 makes us a bit uncomfortable!) you should know about. Of course Enlivex Therapeutics may not be the best stock to buy.
