Lions cornerback pleas for brutal social media messages to stop after season-ending injury

Detroit Lions cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr. was placed on injured reserve with a season-ending injury on Thursday. He then took to social media to ask for the negative messages he was apparently receiving to stop. Rakestraw, 23, injured his shoulder during a tackling drill on Sunday and underwent season-ending shoulder surgery on Thursday. He first took to social media following the surgery on Friday with a positive message. "God has all the answers and I'll never question him.. But truly sorry #Detroit," Rakestraw posted to X. An hour after he posted that, Rakestraw took to X to plead with fans. "And quit (direct messaging) me saying I'm about to get cut," Rakestraw posted. The Lions selected Rakestraw with their second-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft out of Missouri. However, Rakestraw only played eight games last year due to injury. Rakestraw did not start any of those games and accumulated six combined tackles. Lions head coach Dan Campbell expressed sympathy for Rakestraw. "You hate it for the kid," Campbell said earlier this week. "It's not his fault, just one of those tough deals. All you can do is try to get it better and rehab, come back stronger and move on." Rakestraw played in the Hall of Fame game last week against the Los Angeles Chargers, when they lost 34-7. Rakestraw played all four seasons at Missouri. In 36 career games, he had 107 combined tackles, 24 passes defensed, one interception, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. The Lions' next preseason game is against the Atlanta Falcons on Friday at 7:00 p.m. ET.

Lions put CB Ennis Rakestraw Jr. (shoulder) on IR

After Detroit Lions cornerback Ennis Rakestraw Jr. exited Monday's practice with a shoulder injury, coach Dan Campbell warned that the second-year player could be out a while "at best." Indeed that is the case, as the Lions placed Rakestraw on injured reserve after he underwent shoulder surgery on Thursday. As a result, the 2024 second-round pick out of Missouri will miss the entire 2025 season. Prior to his procedure, Rakestraw posted a picture of himself in a hospital gown to his Instagram story with the caption, "Road to Be back starts soon." The shoulder injury was yet another setback for the second-year pro, who was already dealing with a chest contusion suffered during the first day of training camp. His rookie campaign, during which he recorded six tackles across eight games, was also shortened by injuries to his ankle and hamstring. --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2025 - All Rights Reserved

Report: Detroit Lions may choose youth over experience as Rakestraw Jr. challenges Robertson (Image Source: Getty Images) The Detroit Lions have plenty of choices at cornerback heading into the 2025 season, and that's brewing trade rumors. Terrion Arnold and new free agent signee D.J. Reed appear to be in as starters on the outside. But between Amik Robertson, a veteran, and second-year man Ennis Rakestraw Jr., there may be a fight for one of those spots in the slot. Some consider the Lions to trade Robertson, but the team hasn't made any definitive indication they will do so. Amik Robertson's contract year fans trade fire in league Amik Robertson performed well for the Lions in 2024. He had a 61.4% completion rate and a 90.7 passer rating when thrown to solid figures for a slot cornerback. But now that he's in the final year of his deal, folks have begun speculating that he could get traded. One of those is Panthers Wire's Anthony Rizzuti. He wrote the Carolina Panthers could be interested in Robertson as a nickel corner assist. Robertson injured his arm during the playoffs last year but should be available for Week 1. Should he be healthy, he again could be Detroit's primary slot corner. With Ennis Rakestraw Jr. entering his second season, however, the team may prefer to give the younger guy more responsibility. That has only fueled trade speculation. Nevertheless, the Lions haven't given any indication that they're willing to look past Robertson. He provides good depth to the team, and that's something Detroit appreciates after last season's plethora of injuries. Even if Rakestraw ultimately takes over, Robertson would remain a solid backup. Injuries, however, intervened, and he didn't see action there. Now, in the offseason practices, he's doing more on the outside, not the inside. That could indicate the plan to utilize him in the slot is kaput. Even if Rakestraw moves back to the slot before the season begins, it still looks like the Lions want to keep Robertson. They like having strong backups, and Robertson brings experience. With the team's eyes on a deep playoff run, letting go of a proven corner may be too risky.
