Eogene, Ling Ching fall short in Canada Open quarter-finals
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's campaign at the Canada Open came to an end on Friday after both Eogene Ewe and Wong Ling Ching bowed out in the quarter-finals of the Super 300 tournament in Markham, Ontario. Eogene, the world No. 98, fell 21-6, 11-21, 21-9 to Canada's world No. 72 Victor Lai in the men's singles. While a last-eight finish remains a commendable feat - his first at a Super 300 tournament - it was still a missed opportunity for the 20-year-old Eogene, especially after receiving a walkover in the first round from Japan's world No. 40 Takuma Obayashi. Victor is from the same generation as Eogene, and the Malaysian would have fancied his chances of progressing further into the tournament and picking up invaluable world ranking points. Ling Ching, meanwhile, pushed Vietnam's second seed Nguyen Thuy Linh to the limit before going down 17-21, 22-20, 21-15 in a hard-fought encounter that lasted 66 minutes. The 20-year-old, who had stunned fourth seed Line Christophersen of Denmark earlier in the tournament, can still take pride in reaching the quarter-finals of a Super 300 event for only the second time in her career. Thuy Linh, the world No. 22, is widely regarded as Vietnam's top women's player since former men's world No. 5 Nguyen Tien Minh. A three-time Vietnam Open champion, the 27-year-old has been in fine form this year, making the quarter-finals of both the Malaysia Masters and Indonesia Masters, and finishing runner-up at the German Open in 2025 and 2025.

Eogene bounces back to reach Canada Open main draw
KUALA LUMPUR: Eogene Ewe showed strong resolve to bounce back from last week's early exit at the US Open by booking his place in the main draw of the Canada Open. The world No. 98 cleared both his qualifying hurdles at the Markham Pan Am Centre in Ontario on Tuesday to earn a shot at redemption in the Super 300 tournament. Eogene made a confident start, brushing aside India's world No. 137 Chirag Sen 21-14, 21-10. He then edged Taiwan's world No. 93 Ting Yen Chen 21-19, 22-20, improving his head-to-head record against the Taiwanese to 3-1. The back-to-back wins will be a welcome confidence boost for the 20-year-old, who crashed out in the opening qualifying round of the US Open last week to South Korea's Yoo Tae Bin — the same player he had beaten to win the Slovenia Open title in May. Eogene will now look for a further breakthrough when he takes on world No. 40 Takuma Obayashi in the first round on Wednesday. The Japanese shuttler was a finalist at the 2022 Canada Open. Three other Malaysians will also begin their campaigns on Wednesday. World No. 43 Justin Hoh, who fell short of expectations at the US Open last week, opens his men's singles challenge against Taiwan's world No. 71 Wang Po Wei. In the women's singles, K. Letshanaa, fresh off a new career-high ranking of No. 45, will meet American world No. 67 Ishika Jaiswal. World No. 87 Wong Ling Ching faces a tough first-round clash against Denmark's fifth seed and world No. 31 Line Christophersen.

Shuttler Eogene falls flat in US Open qualifiers
KUALA LUMPUR: Just a month ago, Eogene Ewe's title-winning run at the Slovenia Open offered a glimmer of hope - a sign that the he might finally be turning a corner after a string of underwhelming performances on the senior circuit. But the 20-year-old failure to build on that momentum has sparked familiar concerns. Is world No. 98 Eogene destined to become another promising youngster unable to fulfil his potential? The men's singles shuttler suffered a deflating early exit at the US Open in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on Tuesday, crashing out in the first round of the two-stage qualifiers. He lost 21-16, 21-15 to South Korea's world No. 136 Yoo Tae Bin - the very same opponent he had beaten to win his maiden senior title in Slovenia. The defeat raises eyebrows, not just for the result but also for Eogene's inability to assert himself against a familiar opponent, especially at a higher-tier Super 300 event, where a strong showing was crucial to climbing the world rankings. Currently, the fourth-ranked singles player in the national team set up behind Leong Jun Hao, Ng Tze Yong and Justin Hoh, Eogene faces an increasingly narrow window to prove himself. While time is technically on his side, recent history suggests that time alone is no longer a luxury offered by the BA of Malaysia (BAM). Meanwhile, women's singles shuttler Wong Ling Ching, also a champion at the Slovenia Open, negotiated her one-match qualifier with ease, brushing aside American Isabelle Rusli 21-10, 21-11 to reach the main draw. In men's doubles, professional pair Razif Latif–Liu Ansen also made the cut after grinding out a 17-21, 21-14, 21-19 win over India's Arjun Reddy Ponchana-Gouse Shaik.

Eogene says first senior title a spark to fire him up for more
PETALING JAYA: It was relief for shuttler Eogene Ewe (pic) after ending his wait for a senior men's singles title in the Slovenian Open. Eogene fought hard to beat South Korea's Yoo Tae Bin 21-19, 12-21, 21-17 in an hour in Maribor on Sunday to clinch the International Series title. Although it was only a lower tier event, the breakthrough was still memorable for the 20-year-old, who is currently ranked No. 113 in the world. 'This win is memorable for me as it's my first title in a senior tournament. I wish more titles will follow this breakthrough,' said Eogene. 'I didn't think too much and just played my best here. I would like to say that this is a good start for me but I still need to focus and prepare for my next tournaments.' Eogene's previous best results were reaching the semi-finals in the International Challenge tournaments in Vietnam and at home last year. The youngster is looking to continue his good form when he competes next in the Austrian Open starting on Thursday. Meanwhile, reigning Malaysia Games (Sukma) champion Wong Ling Ching also won her first senior international crown in the women's singles by defeating Indonesia's Deswanti Nurtertiati 21-16, 21-15. The victory will come as a boost for Ling Ching after she initially decided to quit the sport and pursue her studies last November before reversing her decision and returning to the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM). The Sarawakian, who is currently ranked No. 100, will be eager to build on her encouraging showing and move up the ranks. Eogene and Ling Ching capture titles in Slovenia

Eogene captured the men's singles title while Ling Ching bagged the women's singles title in the International Series-level tournament — their first senior achievements. World No. 113 Eogene beat South Korea's world No. 252 Yoo Tae Bin 21-19, 12-21, 21-17 in a hard-fought, hour-long final. The win came as a much-needed morale boost for Eogene, who suffered exits in five previous tournaments earlier this year. World No. 100 Ling Ching enjoyed a more straightforward path to her title, dispatching Indonesia's world No. 140 Deswanti Nurtertiati 21-16, 21-15 in just 38 minutes. The Sarawak Malaysia Games champion's Slovenia success is a vindication of her decision to resume her badminton career. Ling Ching left the national set-up in November to focus on her studies, but rejoined the Academy Badminton Malaysia earlier this year.
