Development works reviewed at gram sabha meetings in Thoothukudi and Kanniyakumari
Thoothukudi Collector K. Elambahavath announced that of the 1,402 households in this region 1,344 houses were already provided with drinking water connections. He was speaking at the gram sabha meeting held on Friday at Srimoolakarai village in Srivaikuntam panchayat union.
He said that the various infrastructure works were being carried out in the panchayat. He added that eight hamlets in the panchayat were divided into nine wards to ensure effective implementation of projects such as drinking water projects, public buildings, houses for individuals etc,.
Highlighting the panchayat's potential, being rich in minerals and mining resources, the Collector noted that permissions had recently been granted for the commencement of 16 works in the regions. Various development projects including road works, new anganwadi centres, construction of pump rooms, water tanks and other facilities at a cost of ₹90 lakh, with approvals already in place for the panchayat.
He also urged the villagers to prioritise children's education. 'The public should extend full cooperation to students who have completed 10th and 12th grades to join good education institutions and pursue higher education,' he said.
Additional Collector (Development) R. Iswarya, Revenue Divisional Officer M. Prabhu and other officials were present.
In Kanniyakumari, District Collector R. Alagumeena participated in the gram sabha meeting held at the Athalavilai area of Ramapuram panchayat.
Speaking at the meeting, highlighting the water resources in the region, Ms. Alagumeena said that the village has 12 waterbodies in its vicinity. She called upon the villagers to help make the Kanniyakumari district 'Waste Free,' stressing that villagers should segregate the wastes before disposing of them.
She further noted, 'Under the Kalaignar Kanavu Illam scheme a total of 16 houses have been sanctioned for the village so far in 2025.' In addition one project worth ₹10 lakh under the Equality Crematorium Incentive Fund Scheme and three projects worth ₹9.90 lakh are under way through MGNREGA, she mentioned.
Joseph Antony, Project Director, Rural Development Department, Jenkin Prabakar, Joint Director, Agriculture Department and other officials were present.
