How ‘Bigs' get as much as they give as mentors with Big Brothers Big Sisters

More than 200 children are on the waiting list for mentors through Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Mississippi Valley, but it's not just the kids who benefit from the program. As Our Quad Cities News' Eric Olsen shows us, the 'Bigs' get just as much out of the program as they give, serving as mentors. To find out more about being a mentor to a waiting child, click . WATCH: Rescue team takes recovered eagle back home to Mercer County skies

A recovered Bald Eagle is soaring over the skies of Mercer County again – possibly in the company of her mate. She has recovered from a broken wing, and her rescuers hope she will reunite with him. Eric Olsen of Our Quad Cities News was on hand at the Sunday release. When Alexis the eagle struggled to fly with three breaks in her wing, Hog Capitol Wildlife rescue in Kewanee helped her. 'We took her back home, wrapped her wing, took her for X-rays She had a really bad break,' said Tamara Yarger, with the rescue. 'I think it was broken in three places.' That was in January. On Sunday, the team carried Alexis out to the same area of Mercer County where she was found injured. 'She's gorgeous,' Yarger said. 'She's absolutely gorgeous. It's mating season, and we don't want her to miss it. I think she's ready to go.' 'it's nice to see her come back home,' said Jennifer Russell, wildlife photographer. 'I we we would have seen her mate. But it's been a bit. He's got to figure out she's here and she's looking for him.' The Yargers have special training to help eagles and other wild animals return to their homes. Alexis is their latest success story. Hog Capitol Wildlife, based in Kewanee, helped more than 300 wild animals last year. Visit here to find out more. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
