Buc-ee's near Fort Pierce not on planned locations list; project awaiting final approvals
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Buc-ee's currently lists four locations opening in 2025 or 2026 on its website, but that list does not include the Texas-based mega-travel center chain's planned first location on the Treasure Coast, which also would be its southernmost location in Florida. Depending on local and state approvals still in progress, the St. Lucie County location — at the southeast corner of Interstate 95's Indrio Road interchange — could join that list, with a possible opening date in 2026. County spokesperson Erick Gill said in a May 23 email that the project is still awaiting final site plan approval, followed by permitting approvals for site development and building. Buc-ee's submitted its final site plan to St. Lucie County in January, and, Gill said in an email at the time, that unless significant changes are made to the plans, that approval could be granted without the need for another vote by the County Commission. The site plan submitted in January was substantially similar to preliminary versions already approved by commissioners. The project still may need approvals from other agencies before construction can begin, according to Gill. He declined to speak for those agencies, but they likely include the Florida Department of Transportation. During an April 8 County Commission meeting, Commissioner Larry Leet said that at least some of those state agency approvals have already been granted. "I found out that it was in the state's review and the state has put their stamp of approval on it, so Buc-ee's is officially moving forward," Leet said. If and when all of the approvals are secured, construction of a typical Buc-ee's takes 12-15 months from start to opening day, company officials have said. That could put an opening sometime in 2026, joining an already-announced location in Boerne, Texas, opening that year. Locations opening in 2025 include Harrison County, Mississippi; Brunswick, Georgia; and Rockingham County, Virginia. Other planned locations, like the one in St. Lucie County, have yet to have official opening dates announced, including multiple stores in Florida. A planned location in Ocala has been in the works since before the one here. In February, plans were also revealed for a potential location in Tallahassee. What to know about the proposed 5 high-rises,192 foot building on South Hutchinson Island
A proposed multi-use development on South Hutchinson Island could exceed local height restrictions, in part due to 2023 legislation. The Live Local Act is a state law that allows developers to circumvent local government approvals if at least 40% of a project is set aside for affordable housing. With this law, development is allowed to be built to the maximum height allowed on any property within a mile of the project. The proposed development on the 42.4-acre Causeway Cove Marina property at 601 Seaway Drive would include: Five high-rise buildings 2,326 parking spots 1,066 apartment units 204 hotel rooms 198-slip marina Tens of thousands of square feet of retail space Here's what to know about the proposed development. Fort Pierce sewer plant: First master plan released for redevelopment of South Causeway South Hutchinson Island: 17-story high rises are part of 5-building complex proposed The proposed development includes five high-rise buildings, which are labeled as Building A, B, C, D and E. Here's what each building is proposed to have, according to site plans: Building A: 17-story complex topped out at 192 feet 887-space parking garage 33,284 square feet of commercial space 27,779-square-foot convention center on the ground floor. 215 apartment units 204 hotel rooms Building A's proposed height would be taller than Cinderella Castle at Walt Disney World. The castle stands at 189 feet, according to Walt Disney World's website. Building B: 17 stories topping out at 186 feet 415 apartment units 440-space parking garage Building C: 14-story building that would reach 127 feet at its rooftop 164 apartment units 388 parking spots, including some set aside for the planned marina Other marina amenities and retail spaces would be housed within Building C Building D: Same height as Building C 164 apartment units 433 spots Marina parking and amenities, as well as retail space Building E: 11 stories, or higher than 118 feet 108 apartment units 178 parking spots The tallest planned building at Causeway Cove, which is Building A, likely would match or exceed the tallest structures anywhere on South Hutchinson Island. The normal height limit for the South Beach Overlay District, the parts of South Hutchinson Island inside of Fort Pierce city limits, is 45 feet. The maximum building height on the island in unincorporated St. Lucie County is 125 feet, with a few high rises that predate those rules stretching to 150-175 feet, county spokesperson Erick Gill said last year. The tallest structures on the island, the containment buildings of the St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plant, are about 190-200 feet, Gill said. In Martin County, the limit on the island is just 40 feet. Buc-ee's taps this Florida city for new location. When is Buc-ee's opening in St. Lucie?
ST. LUCIE COUNTY — Buc-ee's submitted a permit application on Feb. 7 to bring the mega-sized Texas gas station chain to Tallahassee. Buc-ee's opened Florida's first location in February 2021 in St. Augustine, followed by a Daytona Beach location a month later. Since then, an Ocala location has been in the works to become the third location, and Buc-ee's has submitted applications for St. Lucie County, near Fort Pierce and for Tallahassee. If both applications are approved, that would bring the state Buc-ee's count to five. Here's what to know about Buc-ee's coming to St. Lucie County. Buc-ee's news: Final site plan application to St. Lucie County for Indrio Road location submitted Orange juice: Citrus growers here have mixed feelings about impact of tariffs, retaliation by Canada Buc-ee's submitted a final site plan for a new location north of Fort Pierce in January. Over a year of various county approvals, that final site plan is expected to be reviewed by county staff, meaning construction could begin without the need for any more County Commission votes. St. Lucie County spokesperson Erick Gill said Thursday the internal Development Review Committee is scheduled to begin looking at the plan this week or next. Once approved by staff, Buc-ee's officials have previously said, construction typically takes 12-15 months from start to doors opening. With that timeline, Buc-ee's opening date on the Treasure Coast could be sometime in 2026. Buc-ee's proposal is located at the southeast quadrant of the Indrio Road and Interstate 95 interchange, north of Fort Pierce. The project also includes new roads to help with traffic flow. Instead of entering directly off Indrio Road, a new extension of Koblegard Road would be built with two entrances to the parking lot on the new road. The site plan shows the Buc-ee's with the following specs: 76,245-square-foot retail store 778 parking spaces 611 standard parking spots 19 disabled-accessible parking spots 10 bus parking spots 120 gas pumps 18 charging spaces for electric vehicles The Texas-based chain operates locations across Texas, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Kentucky, Tennessee and South Carolina. It's known for its large locations offering products such as home decor, clothing, grilling items, beef jerky, fudge, brisket sandwiches, candied nuts and store-brand snack products. Buc-ee's also is known for its clean bathrooms, cheap gas and car washes. Wicker Perlis contributed to this report. Gianna Montesano is TCPalm's trending reporter.
