Carmelite Monastery set to be demolished this summer

After the Carmelite Monastery on East Gore Road closed in 2020, it was set to be demolished. By the end of summer, the building could be completely gone. Before the sisters went to different monasteries, they stripped the inside of the building and invited religious communities to take items they could use. Father Christopher Singer said they are grateful to the many years of service that the Carmelite sisters gave to the Diocese of Erie. Northwest Tri-County honors 13 new adult education graduates 'They prayed for us, they prayed for vocations, they were very close to the hearts of many people and even those those sisters have moved on to other monasteries and many of them have gone on to eternal life they still pray for the people of the diocese of erie and we're grateful for that,' Father Singer told us. Erie community shows support for new pope at special mass

Catholics around the world have a new face of leadership as Pope Leo XIV takes the reins from the late Pope Francis. Monday night, Erie's Catholic community came together for a special mass at Saint Peter Cathedral on West 10th Street to celebrate the new pontiff and pray for his future as leader of the Catholic Church. 'I think the cardinal electors, led by the Holy Spirit, picked the right man for this era and what is needed to lead the church. It's something that I personally thought would never happen, that they would elect someone from the United States, but then again, that's the Holy Spirit at work,' said Bishop Lawrence Persico, Erie Catholic Diocese. Bishop Lawrence Persico speaks on passing of Pope Francis Bishop Persico says the mass for Pope Leo is a sign of unity in the catholic church, but also a celebration of new leadership. Nearly 100 local Catholics showed up to the mass, both praying and showing support for the Catholic Church's new leader. 'He needs a lot of support and prayers. There's a lot to be done in our world, let alone in our own community,' said Michael Gallagher, a Fairview resident. 'This is not something he can do with his own human abilities. It's something that God has called him to and therefore we have to support him,' said Kathleen Dietz, Sister of the Spiritual Family 'The Work.' Both Gallagher and Dietz say they like the cardinals' choice of Pope Leo and are excited about the idea of an American pope. What happens if a pope resigns? As the new pontiff is just starting his papacy, Catholics still aren't sure what kind of leader Leo will be, but are hopeful for the future. 'It happened so quickly, and that means that the cardinals were unified, and that's really important,' said Dietz. 'I think we need some changes still, and I think that if he follows Pope Francis and finishes what he started, I think that will be a really good thing for everyone,' said Gallagher. Pope Leo's inaugural mass is scheduled for May 18th in Saint Peter's Square. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. How should retirees feel about their investments amid stock market fluctuations?

As the stock market continues to fluctuate, anxiety levels for many retirees, as well as people close to retiring, have spiked. Some feel as though their financial status is at risk. Jim Lyons, financial advisor with Edward Jones, said there's no doubt when things go down, no one likes it and people can get nervous, but said it's a normal part of the investing process. According to the U.S. Census Department, there are more than 70 million Americans who take part in employer 401K programs. Elderly man loses over $1K following online security scam But when it comes to your 401K, it can be tied closely to the market's performance. And with some people seeing a dip in their investments, it's caused paranoia for some when it comes to what they should do with their money. 'The emotions of investing are tricky because your body is telling you to do something different than what you should be doing, but if you recognize that's the way it is then you can be calm,' said Lyons. If you're close to retirement or are already retired, you shouldn't be relying on the stock market for income. Financial experts said people at this stage of life should be much more conservative in their investments than if they were younger — They should be in the process of planning on taking some income from your 401K, rolling it over, or moving it over to an IRA in their own name. Lyons says age-based 401 K s are another good option, where you set it for when you plan on retiring, and it automatically rebalances based on that. In those instances, your downturn should be a lot less than someone who is much deeper in stocks right now. 'We've seen downturns in 2000, downturns in 2020, one in 2008, and now this of this magnitude. You want to make sure you plan for them in advance because you know that they're going to happen,' said Lyons. 'What you can control is the diversification of your account, so how much stocks to bonds you have, and then the quality of the investments that you have. How you determine good quality is just how they perform against other investments that do what they do.' But that can also be an opportunity for riskier investors. 'When it's low and people feel bad about things, the one year return the next year averaged about 14% a year. When people feel good, a one-year return a year later is about 5% a year,' said Lyons. Lyons said if you're a young investor, though, it's a good time to save and to invest in long-term options that can spring up after the market bounces back. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
