Deconstructing to reconstruct, work continues at former EMI site

The president and CEO of the Erie County Redevelopment Authority Tina Mengine said 'deconstructing to reconstruct' is taking place.

The back south wall of the former building has been taken down and progress to rebuild it will take place this week with bricks being pointed.
Mengine says the project is moving along but there is still a lot that needs to be done including taking off the remaining roof, new windows, and signage.
She said funding has played a crucial role in the project. She recalled an obstacle that was recently encountered.

'So we had two grants that were at risk totaling about $5 million we were able to resolve the one grant thanks to the help of the state which leaves us with about $3 million still at risk which were hoping to work through much like we did that first one so that does impact obviously if that can't be resolved,' she explained.
Mengine said construction is still on track to be completed in spring 2026.
