Predators reacquire Erik Haula from Devils

June 19 - After a disappointing 2024-25 campaign, the Nashville Predators made a splash in the offseason trade market on Wednesday. Nashville reacquired forward Erik Haula from the New Jersey Devils for defenseman Jeremy Hanzel and a 2025 fourth-round pick. In 759 career NHL games, Haula has 337 points (153 goals, 184 assists). He has added 16 goals and 21 assists in 78 playoff appearances. After being drafted in the seventh round of the 2009 NHL Draft by the Minnesota Wild, the veteran winger has spent 10 seasons in the league with the Wild (2013-17), Vegas Golden Knights (2017-19), Carolina Hurricanes (2019-20), Florida Panthers (2020), Predators (2020-21), Boston Bruins (2021-22) and the Devils (2022-25). Haula, 34, scored nine goals and added 12 assists in 51 games in 2020-21 during his first stint with the Preds. The winger is entering the final year of a three-year contract ($3.15 million AAV). Hanzel, 22, spent the 2024-25 season with the Milwaukee Admirals (AHL) and Gwinnett Gladiators (ECHL). He was held pointless in four games for the Admirals and had three goals and 19 assists in 61 games for the Gladiators. The 6-foot-1 defender was drafted in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL Draft by the Colorado Avalanche before being dealt to the Predators in March 2024. --Field Level Media

Predators expect captain Roman Josi back for camp despite health diagnosis

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Nashville captain Roman Josi is expected at training camp in September after the Predators said Wednesday the defenseman was diagnosed with postural tachycardia syndrome or POTS late last season. 'He has been undergoing treatment since that diagnosis and is progressing exceptionally well,' general manager Barry Trotz said in a statement. 'We concur with Roman that with continued management and treatment, he can return to the ice for the 2025-26 season and continue with his elite hockey career." Advertisement The 2020 Norris Trophy winner and three-time All-Star was limited to 53 games this season by a concussion. His last game was Feb. 25 against now two-time Stanley Cup champion Florida when he didn't return after driven hard into the end boards by Sam Bennett midway through the second period. POTS doesn't have a cure but can be treated. Its symptoms include a fast heart rate, dizziness and fatigue. Josi, who turned 35 at the start of June, was among the first six players selected Monday to Switzerland's Olympic roster for the 2026 Winter Games in Italy. The captain signed an eight-year $72 million contract in 2019 through the 2027-28 season. He has played 962 games with 190 goals and 534 assists. Advertisement Trade time The Predators also announced they have acquired forward Erik Haula from New Jersey for defenseman Jeremy Hanzel and a fourth-round pick in next week's draft. This brings Haula back for a second stint with Nashville. A seventh-round pick by Minnesota in 2009, Haula has played 759 games with the Wild, Vegas, Carolina, Florida, Nashville, Boston and New Jersey. Now 34, Haula played 69 games for the Devils this season with 21 points and 39 penalty minutes. The 5-foot-11, 191-pound forward averaged 14 minutes, 42 seconds of ice time per game. He also had 101 hits and blocked 35 shots. The Predators still have nine selections in the 2025 NHL draft starting June 27, including three in the first round. ___ AP NHL:

Devils trade Erik Haula to Predators for Jeremy Hanzel, draft pick

The New Jersey Devils traded Erik Haula to the Nashville Predators on Wednesday for a 2025 fourth-round pick and defenseman Jeremy Hanzel, who spent most of this past season in the ECHL. Haula has one year left on his deal at a $3.15 million cap hit. The 34-year-old Haula had 21 points in 69 games this past season, and he returns to the team with which he spent the 2020-21 season. Haula had 41 points on the 2022-23 Devils team that made the second round, but his production has dropped since. He had only one point in five games in New Jersey's first-round loss to Carolina. If he can bet back into the 35-44 point range — which he was the three seasons before 2024-25 — he can be a useful middle-six player for the Predators. TRADE 🔄 Forward Erik Haula is back in Smashville! The Devils receive defensemen Jeremy Hanzel and a 2025 4th round draft pick. Full trade details » — Nashville Predators (@PredsNHL) June 18, 2025 The move opens up cap space for New Jersey and gives president Tom Fitzgerald another draft pick to work with, either to use or to include in another trade. The Devils have just over $14 million in cap space, a good chunk of which will go to restricted free agent Luke Hughes. The team could also look to bolster its middle-six forward group or even go after a top-line player such as Nikolaj Ehlers if the price is right. Hanzel was a 2023 sixth-round pick by Colorado. Nashville acquired him in March 2024 as part of a package for Yakov Trenin.
