South Milwaukee to install public bicycle repair stations complete with tools

South Milwaukee bicycle riders will soon be able to repair their bicycles for free. That's assuming they can do the repairs themselves, because the city is installing two public bicycle repair stations that come complete with a bicycle stand and tethered tools including screwdrivers, wrenches, and hex tools. The stations also include a bicycle pump, according to city documents. South Milwaukee's Common Council approved the installation of these two stations, and one new bicycle rack, with a 5-2 vote on June 3, according to City Administrator Patrick Brever. Here's what you need to know. Two bicycle repair stations will be installed. The first will be near the Bucyrus Commons/Crusher statue. The second will be at the South Milwaukee City Hall, 2424 15th Ave. If there is a lot of positive feedback and requests for more, the program could be expanded in the future, according to the council's information sheet. As part of the approval, a bicycle rack will also be installed in front of Bakehouse 23, 1309 Milwaukee Ave., after the owner made a request for it. The council voted that this project does not exceed a cost of $3,250. Money for this project is coming from the Bucyrus Foundation fund which is money granted to South Milwaukee from the Bucyrus Foundation focused on funding institutions and infrastructure in the city. The Village of Bayside added a bicycle repair station in 2024. The council's information sheet notes Bayside staff said the station has been well received and there have been no concerns. Focus groups, interviews, surveys and events were hosted by health departments in the south shore including the South Milwaukee/St. Francis Health Department in 2022 and 2023. The community was asked how the city could be healthy and thrive, and one response was to add bicycle repair areas, according to city documents. South Milwaukee first rallied to get Milwaukee County to install the stations in the city during the summer of 2024 through a Community Development Block Grant request. Earlier this year, that request was denied, according to city documents. The initiative was revisited in May 2025 by the city's Board of Health and then by the council. City documents said South Milwaukee's application to Milwaukee County for CDBG funding noted the installation of bicycle repair stations will "provide significant benefits to our low-to-moderate income residents, promoting equitable access to transportation, and improving health outcomes.' South Milwaukee's comprehensive plan uses a bike score to determine how good an area is for biking. It takes into account bicycle lanes, road connectivity, trails, hills and destinations. South Milwaukee's overall bike score is 46 out of 100 while the downtown area is 56 out of 100, per city documents. Contact Erik S. Police arrest two Franklin men after reports of late-night gun shots near middle school

Two Franklin men have been arrested, and a firearm was recovered, after numerous reports of gunshots late May 8, according to the Franklin Police Department. Officers responded to the 8600 block of West Cascade Drive around 11 p.m., May 8, after numerous reports of gunshots, a May 9 news release from the police department said. Officers found bullet casings in the area which is about 1,000 feet from the Forest Park Middle School grounds, according to Google Maps. Police said an investigation determined shots were fired from one vehicle into another occupied vehicle. Greendale Police officers stopped the offending vehicle shortly after Franklin Police arrived on-scene. A firearm, which police said they believe was used in the shooting, was found in the vehicle. 'This is believed to be an isolated incident between parties known to each other, and there is no ongoing threat to the public at this time,' police said. The two male occupants, a 22-year-old and a 24-year-old, were taken to the Milwaukee County Criminal Justice Facility. Charges of first-degree recklessly endangering safety and felon in possession of a firearm will be forwarded to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office, police said. The investigation is continuing to locate the vehicle struck by gunfire which police said fled the scene. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Franklin Police Department. South Milwaukee looks to create a plaza space downtown with a large city name sculpture

South Milwaukee has a new Bucyrus Commons space downtown but now the city is hoping to create a second smaller plaza about a block away. The Common Council is set to discuss contracting with Milwaukee-based engineering and design firm Graef to create concepts for the Tri City National Bank plaza at its Jan. 28 meeting. The beautification project could see improvements to the site on the southeast corner of 10th and Milwaukee avenues including the installation of an art sculpture. The city's downtown strategic vision report recommends upgrading intersections with art. South Milwaukee's comprehensive downtown 2035 plan provides concepts for a plaza space with a large 'SoMKE" channel-letter cabinet sculpture. Bucyrus Foundation grant funds would assist with costs, according to city documents. The plaza is on a separate parcel from the bank branch across an alley. It's approximately 5,400 square feet (45 feet by 120 feet). The space currently features six concrete benches, some planters and other landscaping, a 20-foot tall bank sign, bus shelter, a Ten Commandments monument, and other elements. City staff met with representatives from Tri City National Bank and they support the project, according to city documents. The first phase is to create a site concept and seek bank approvals. In a letter from Craig Huebner, project manager at Graef, it's noted if the new Graef proposal is accepted, with an estimated $4,000 cost, the firm will create concepts including 3D visuals, design drawings and cost estimates. Cudahy could get 264 luxury apartments as part of new $30 million project proposal

Cudahy could get 264 luxury townhome apartments if a new project gets approved. Sussex-based Sawall Development wants to construct the apartments on 19 acres currently owned by the City of Cudahy at the southwest corner of Sweet Applewood Lane and East Barnard Avenue and east of South Nicholson Avenue. The $30 million project would include 12 two-story buildings featuring studio apartments around 500 square feet in size, one-bedroom units (around 800 square feet) and two-bedroom units (around 1,100 square feet). Each of the units would have its own entrance and either a private balcony or patio area. Sawall will present the proposal to Cudahy's Community Development Authority on Jan. 28. The developer said in its submittal to the city the development would blend seamlessly into the natural landscape with a focus on 'the principles of sustainability and modern urban living.' 'This project aims to redefine suburban living by providing a harmonious balance between modern amenities and the tranquility of nature, creating a vibrant community where residents can thrive,' Sawall wrote in its submittal. Sawall plans to retain ownership of the development once completed and will manage the property, per the submittal. The architect for the project is Stephen Perry Smith Architects based in Milwaukee. Sawall Development has created multi-family, townhome, commercial and retail developments across Wisconsin, including Mammoth Springs Apartments and Townhomes in Sussex, Rock Pointe Village in Lannon and The Granary Townhomes in Union Grove.
