RM119,400 drugs seized, two held

PENAMPANG: A recent joint operation by Sabah Police Contingent's Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department and Penampang police resulted in the seizure of various drugs worth RM119,400 and the arrest of two local men. Both suspects, aged 31 and 49, tested positive for various drug substances. Penampang District Police Chief Supt Sammy Newton said the raid on an entertainment premises yielded 5.727gm of ecstasy powder, 32.58gm of ketamine, 18 Erimin 5 pills weighing 6.23gm and 11 ecstasy pills weighing 5gm. 'The first suspect tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine, while the second tested positive for methamphetamine, amphetamine and ketamine,' he said, Thursday. Background checks revealed that one of the suspects has a previous criminal record related to drug offences, indicating possible repeat involvement in narcotics activities. Both men are being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries severe penalties including the death sentence or life imprisonment of 30 years, along with a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane, on conviction. Advertisement The case is also being investigated under Section 15(1)(A) of the same Act, which provides for a maximum fine of RM5,000 or imprisonment up to two years if found guilty. The suspects are currently under remand as investigations continue. Penampang district police chief Supt Sammy Newton said the joint operation between the Sabah Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department and Penampang district police narcotics division uncovered suspected ecstasy powder (5,727g), ketamine (32.58g), Erimin 5 pills (6.23g), and ecstasy pills (5g). 'Urine tests found both suspects positive for multiple drugs, including methamphetamine, amphetamine, and ketamine,' he said, adding that one suspect has a previous drug-related record. The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment, and Section 15(1)(a) for drug use. The suspect, said to be operating alone, would disguise the drugs as valuable items. Some of the drugs were even concealed in tea packaging to further evade scrutiny. The man's luck finally ran out on Thursday when police arrested him at the parking lot of an apartment block in Butterworth. Police also raided a rented apartment where drugs worth RM2.1mil were stashed. The suspect's clientele was built purely through word of mouth, with buyers reaching out directly to place orders. Penang police chief Comm Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said they seized 12.32kg of MDMA powder, 384g of ketamine, 500 Erimin pills and 150 Ecstasy pills. 'We also seized equipment believed to have been used for packaging the drugs. There were different labels of courier companies on the boxes. 'The drugs could have been used to feed the habit of 400,000 addicts,' he said in a press conference at the state police headquarters yesterday. Police also seized a car worth RM130,000, three gold chains valued at RM28,582 and four gold rings worth RM11,250. Comm Hamzah said the suspect tested positive for methamphetamine, amphetamine and ketamine. The suspect has been remanded until May 22 for investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

GEORGE TOWN, May 16 (Bernama) -- Penang police have uncovered a drug processing and distribution operation using courier services, seizing an assortment of narcotics worth RM2.1 million in two raids in Butterworth yesterday. Penang police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said the state Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department launched the operation between 9 am and 8 pm, leading to the arrest of a 41-year-old man at the parking lot of a condominium. 'Police raided a unit in the condominium and discovered various types of drugs, including 5,320 grammes of MDMA, 397 sachets of instant drink powder containing MDMA, 384 grams of ketamine, 500 Erimin 5 tablets and 150 ecstasy pills. 'A range of drug-processing and packaging equipment was also seized from the rented unit. The suspect is believed to possess the expertise to process multiple substances into MDMA,' he told a press conference today. Hamzah said the suspect's modus operandi involved repackaging MDMA into juice boxes or instant beverage sachets for distribution to buyers via various courier services. Hamzah said the suspect's activities were uncovered following three weeks of surveillance and intelligence gathering, which also led police to identify the syndicate supplying him with the drugs. 'The man is unemployed but was living a lavish lifestyle funded by his drug trafficking activities, which began late last year. He also tested positive for drugs and has a prior criminal record,' he said. Police also seized a luxury Mercedes-Benz vehicle, cash, and seven pieces of gold jewellery, with a combined estimated value of RM170,882. The suspect has been remanded for seven days until May 22 to assist in investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
