Police Bust Courier-based Drug Operation, Seize RM2.1 Mln Narcotics
Penang police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said the state Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department launched the operation between 9 am and 8 pm, leading to the arrest of a 41-year-old man at the parking lot of a condominium.
'Police raided a unit in the condominium and discovered various types of drugs, including 5,320 grammes of MDMA, 397 sachets of instant drink powder containing MDMA, 384 grams of ketamine, 500 Erimin 5 tablets and 150 ecstasy pills.
'A range of drug-processing and packaging equipment was also seized from the rented unit. The suspect is believed to possess the expertise to process multiple substances into MDMA,' he told a press conference today.
Hamzah said the suspect's modus operandi involved repackaging MDMA into juice boxes or instant beverage sachets for distribution to buyers via various courier services.
Hamzah said the suspect's activities were uncovered following three weeks of surveillance and intelligence gathering, which also led police to identify the syndicate supplying him with the drugs.
'The man is unemployed but was living a lavish lifestyle funded by his drug trafficking activities, which began late last year. He also tested positive for drugs and has a prior criminal record,' he said.
Police also seized a luxury Mercedes-Benz vehicle, cash, and seven pieces of gold jewellery, with a combined estimated value of RM170,882.
The suspect has been remanded for seven days until May 22 to assist in investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Police waiting for DPP directive in Datuk Seri road rage case
KEPALA BATAS: Police are waiting for further instructions from the deputy public prosecutor on whether to press charges against a Datuk Seri who was involved in a road rage incident that left a woman injured. Acting state police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said investigations into the case have long been completed and the findings have already been submitted to the prosecution. "We submitted the investigation papers to the prosecution a while back. We now have to wait for further instructions," he told reporters here today. He was speaking at a brief ceremony to dispose of drugs seized by the state police contingent between 2010 and last year, worth an estimated RM2 million. On June 4, police confirmed that the Datuk Seri had been released on police bail. The 41-year-old was arrested after voluntarily surrendering at the northeast district police headquarters on June 3. Police also seized a pistol, a magazine, and a firearms licence booklet. The incident reportedly occurred while the victim and two friends were driving towards Tanjung Tokong. Her car briefly skidded into the middle lane, but she continued driving as normal. Shortly after, she noticed a black Mercedes-Benz following her. The luxury vehicle then overtook her car and blocked her path. The driver allegedly approached her, shoved a shiny, gold-coloured pistol into her mouth, and struck her with the grip of the weapon. The woman sustained injuries and sought treatment at Penang Hospital before lodging a police report. Police had also said that they were in the process of revoking the Datuk Seri's firearms licence.
