Herman Ese'ese hopes Magic translates in Newcastle after Geordie Shore admission

Hull FC prop first learned about the north east by watching hit MTV show HERMAN Ese'ese hopes to be a hit that needs no translation in Newcastle – after first learning about the place through subtitles. For that is how the boys and girls of Geordie Shore were presented in Australia. 3 Hull FC prop Herman Ese'ese hopes his quality in Newcastle needs no translation - after admitting Geordie Shore came with subtitles when he was in Australia Credit: The MTV show was a surprisingly big hit Down Under, even though the accents left viewers confused. One of them was now Hull FC prop Ese'ese. Now he is heading to the north east for Magic Weekend, he is looking to have the Tyne of his life as John Cartwright's side rides high after 2024's horror show. And after teaching his young team-mates as they endured a woeful season, he hopes his side can further show lessons were learned. Ese'ese said: 'That was the first I'd heard of Newcastle and back when I was in Australia, it was big. 'And it had to have subtitles on it - it's a really thick accent. I don't think anyone could understand it without them! 'But I'm a big football fan and I started watching their team play – and our black and white kit goes well. It's a black and white city and I think it fits the occasion really well. 'When we first drove into Newcastle this week, all I saw was Newcastle United - all the jerseys and people wearing jerseys walking around the streets. 'But it wasn't until I got to the stadium that I realised how big it actually is. I'd only seen it on TV before and it's good for the sport to be played there. It's good for the expansion of the game. 'Newcastle isn't really big in rugby league, but hopefully after the weekend we get a few more on board supporting the game.' Ese'ese has been arguably the form prop of Super League so far as Hull FC sit fourth going into Magic Weekend. 3 Ese'ese has been arguably the best prop in Super League Credit: The 30-year-old, who has faced England for both New Zealand and Australia, has made a habit of skittling opponents on the pitch. Away from it, though, the self-proclaimed 'gentle giant' is a long way from the persona we may see at St James' Park as his side faces winless Huddersfield on Sunday. And the feedback he is now receiving from people who stop him when he is out walking his dog, River, is much more welcome than previously. Ese'ese added: 'When you win more games and you're more successful throughout the season, the fans all jump on board. 'Even last year, we had a good turnout and it was a big learning curve for the younger lads. I can see the growth in them and how they handle themselves on and off the field. 3 Super League's Magic Weekend heads back to Newcastle Credit: 'I felt a bit like a teacher last year but I try to lead with my actions. 'When it comes to games, I'm locked in. Off the field, I'm just a little gentler guy. I'm quiet. 'I love my dog as well. We brought River over - we couldn't leave him. He was our baby boy and we had him since he was eight weeks. 'When I'm out there in public, I get stopped a lot. It comes with the reputation. It comes with the game. 'But I'm happy with that. I can't hide away from it – now they want to speak to me for different reasons.'

‘Geordie Shore' put Newcastle on map for Herman Ese'ese ahead of Magic Weekend

Hull FC prop Herman Ese'ese admitted most of his knowledge about Newcastle stems from television series Geordie Shore as he prepares for his first Super League Magic Weekend on Tyneside. The Black and Whites are in action at St James' Park when they come up against Huddersfield on Sunday. New Zealander Ese'ese joined Hull at the start of 2024 and has only ever competed at Magic Weekend at Elland Road in Leeds, but is relishing the opportunity to play in Newcastle, a city he knows from the MTV reality show. The 30-year-old told PA news agency: 'To be honest, I haven't really heard much about Newcastle. 'I know Newcastle because I used to watch Geordie Shore – I know that's pretty bad! That's the only time I've heard about Newcastle. 'I know their football team, I'm a big football fan and they've been going really well. I've been watching some of their games. The games that they play here, it looks hectic and it looks like a nice atmosphere to play in. 'Hopefully we get a sold-out crowd on Sunday at this beautiful stadium. It's my first one in Newcastle. My first season last year was at Leeds, so I got to miss out playing here, but I'm really excited.' Hull will be aiming for a more enjoyable Magic Weekend experience compared to last year's outing in Leeds, where they lost 29-4 to London Broncos in a wooden-spoon battle. Eight months later and Hull, under new head coach John Cartwright, are sat in fourth. Ese'ese believes a change in coaching staff and new faces in the dressing room has been beneficial. 'What stands out for me is the professionalism. We brought in coaching staff and they know how to build a winning culture,' he said. 'We brought in some senior players – experienced players – that have won a lot in their career and are good role models for our young boys. 'We have a young team so it's good for them to learn from them. When you bring those kind of people in, you tend to win more games and start building a winning culture and building connections within the squad as well.' Ese'ese has continued to impress this season, scoring four tries, and he praised the consistency within the team. 'There's been comments made about how we've been playing, we're a more resilient team now going into the season,' Ese'ese added. 'It's just the team, we don't want to let each other down. We're playing consistent footy, our structure has changed as well. I think our defensive game has definitely improved a lot. 'When you bring in someone like Andy Last, who's a really high-rated coach, he's taken control of our defence. 'We're an all-round team this season. There is a reason why teams wouldn't want to face us.'

The Hermantor: NRL journeyman turning heads at Hull FC

Herman Ese'ese and John Cartwright continue to go from strength to strength at Hull FC, who have soared up to second place in the UK Super League after cruising past Castleford 24-14. Ese'ese played NRL games for Canterbury, Brisbane, Newcastle, Gold Coast and the Dolphins before linking up with Hull for the 2024 season. The 30-year-old powerhouse celebrated his new contract extension, running until 2029, in style during an impressive away win. Ese'ese underscored his worth to Cartwright's revitalised Black and Whites as he shrugged off the attentions of three Castleford defenders to bustle over for the opening try with 10 minutes on the clock. Tonight belongs to Herman, and Herman only 💪⚫️⚪️ #COYH | @ecostrad — Hull FC (@hullfcofficial) March 27, 2025 "It's massive for the club. Herman is scoring tries at will and he's good to have around the club - he's a great team man and a club man," Cartwright said of Ese'ese's new long-term deal. "He never misses training, he plays big minutes and he is probably the best front man in the game at the moment." Castleford head coach Danny McGuire issued a withering assessment of his side. "Ese'ese is a big man but it looks like he's a man against under 10s or something," said McGuire. "It's just crazy, and it's exactly the same as last week. I just don't understand why he can't be stopped. There's not enough desperation." The star's muscular display set the tone for a victory that built on last week's gutsy success at Wakefield. A new contract, a try for the fourth game in a row, and a Man of the Match display 🔥All in a night's work for the Hermanator 😤⚫️⚪️ #COYH | @rowefreight — Hull FC (@hullfcofficial) March 27, 2025 The result tees Hull FC up nicely for next week's Challenge Cup derby against Hull KR, the only team left to separate them from the Super League summit. Cartwright has the luxury of a long weekend off before the build-up kicks in to next week's derby, and he is relishing the prospect of experiencing the atmosphere of the all-Hull clash for the first time. "It's exciting - you have to live in Hull to know the feeling in the town at the moment," he said, having been appointed coach after Hull FC managed just three wins in 2024. "There's a heavy rivalry and I've picked up on that pretty quickly. I'm really looking forward to it, and I think it is going to be a huge occasion." The only dampener for Cartwright's side was a head knock sustained by Cade Cust in a high tackle by Innes Senior early in the second half, which saw Senior sin-binned and means Cust will miss the Cup quarter-final. Jack Ashworth's short pass sent Aidan Sezer surging over before halftime, with Sezer's clean kicking helping him rack up a personal tally of 12 points. with PA
