Nature, Culture, and Connection: Costa Rica strengthens bilateral relations with Qatar

Ashraf Siddiqui HE Juan Carlos Esquivel, ambassador of Costa Rica to Qatar, while addressing members of the Costa Rican community in Doha on Thursday, highlighted the nation's cultural richness, unique agricultural innovations, and the deepening diplomatic relationship between Costa Rica and Qatar. The event featured a vibrant showcase of Costa Rican heritage, including the rare and visually striking pink pineapple—a sweet, lab-developed fruit retailing in Qatar for QR 50 and known to sell for as much as $100 in Japan. The guests also enjoyed authentic Costa Rican dishes and a curated selection of local coffees, catering to both bold and mild palates. Ambassador Esquivel underscored Costa Rica's natural appeal, describing its essence as 'gold, green, and water.' He invited the Qatari people and the residents to experience the country through its pristine beaches, misty mountains, lush forests, and thriving biodiversity, emphasising that Costa Rica offers an immersive, nature-first alternative to urban tourism. 'Enjoy the forest, embrace a tree, breathe the fresh morning air—that's Costa Rica,' he said. A central theme of his address was Pura Vida, the emblematic Costa Rican phrase that translates to 'pure life'. More than a greeting, Pura Vida reflects a national philosophy of optimism, gratitude, and simplicity, resonating in everyday life and interactions. The ambassador also discussed the growing cooperation between Costa Rica and Qatar, noting the agreements signed during a high-level Qatari visit to San José. These include academic exchanges, scientific collaboration, and tourism development. Drawing on Costa Rica's extensive experience in eco-tourism, he emphasised the importance of managing not only tourist arrivals but also the entire visitor experience—transportation, waste management, and cultural engagement. Addressing perceptions of the Gulf region, Esquivel called for stronger storytelling to share the richness of Qatari culture with the world, pointing out Costa Rica's expertise in building compelling narratives that showcase a nation's beauty. He further credited Costa Rica's high literacy rate and innovation to its post-1948 decision to abolish the military and redirect defence spending to education. This, he said, has enabled Costa Ricans to contribute meaningfully to global industries, including tech giants like Intel. Closing his remarks, Esquivel praised the achievements of the Costa Rican diaspora in Qatar and encouraged ongoing connection. He extended a warm invitation to the global community to live and work remotely from Costa Rica—where Pura Vida is more than a phrase; it's a way of life.

Mamelodi Sundowns set to cut ties with midfield flop

Mamelodi Sundowns are set to cut ties with midfield flop after the current campaign. Masandawana are preparing to offload Argentine midfielder Matías Esquivel at the end of the season, a source has confirmed. The decision comes after the player failed to make a significant impact since his arrival, with the club already ironing out the final details of his departure. According to a source, Sundowns have already agreed in principle to part ways with Esquivel. The midfielder, who joined the club in 2023 on a four-year deal, has struggled to break into the starting lineup and has now fallen down the pecking order. 'For now, the decision is as good as done. Esquivel won't be staying on at the club for next season. He is one of the players that the team is believed to be releasing next season and apparently he would be returning back to his club in Argentina,' the source revealed. With game time hard to come by, the club sees no reason to keep him on the books for the remaining two years of his contract. Esquivel, who was loaned back to his former team Talleres de Córdoba shortly after joining Sundowns. And he is expected to return to the Argentine side on a permanent basis. Sundowns are now working behind the scenes to finalize a mutual termination of Esquivel's contract. With two years still remaining. The financial details of the separation are currently being negotiated between the club and the player's representatives. 'Of course Sundowns have to negotiate a pay out if they are releasing him. He still has a contract and that's what they are working on with the player's representative. To see how best they can work out his release,' the source explained. Esquivel's move to Chloorkop came with high expectations, but he failed to cement his place in the team. After returning to Sundowns during the January transfer window from his loan spell, he continued to struggle for minutes on the pitch. Despite being fully fit, he remained on the fringes of the squad. His lack of integration into the team's tactical setup and fierce competition for midfield spots have made it clear that his future lies elsewhere. Esquivel's imminent exit marks the latest in Sundowns' off-season shakeup, as the club looks to streamline its squad ahead of the new campaign. St. Cloud Community Unites to Honor Madeline Soto with Permanent Memorial

Friday, community members, advocates, and St. Cloud city leaders gathered at Lakefront Park to unveil a memorial bench honoring 13-year-old Madeline Soto, whose tragic death in February 2024. The teen was reported missing and later found dead. Her mother's boyfriend, Stephan Sterns, is now charged in connection to her death and faces dozens of counts of sexual abuse. But amid the grief, neighbors, businesses, and strangers have come together to create something lasting: a place to remember, reflect, and rise for change. The bench already exists along the shoreline of Lakefront Park. It now holds a plaque dedicated to Madeline 'Maddie' Soto and reads 'Forever Loved, Forever 13.' The plaque was issued by St. Cloud Parks and Recreation 'Bench Tribute Program' after help with donations through community T-shirt drives allowing advocates to purchase it. Advocates for Maddie said the bench is now more than just a seat. It's a symbol that allows moments of quiet reflection and a permanent tribute to a life gone too soon. 'This is an amazing tribute to her that all in the community will be able to visit and reflect upon her life,' said Chris Robertson, Mayor of St. Cloud. Jenny Esquivel, an advocate for Madeline, said the memorial is just the beginning, plans are already in motion for workshops, youth programs, and legislation driven by Madeline's story. 'Next on the agenda is certifying an educational curriculum so that different agencies can implement it to teach children how to protect themselves. We are heading in the legislative direction. That is still in the works,' said Esquivel. For many, the bench has already become a sacred space. A place to talk. A place to cry. A place to hope. 'It represents hope and change. The many things that we have worked on,' said Esquivel. Click here to download our free news, weather and smart TV apps. And click here to stream Channel 9 Eyewitness News live.
