St. Cloud Community Unites to Honor Madeline Soto with Permanent Memorial
Friday, community members, advocates, and St. Cloud city leaders gathered at Lakefront Park to unveil a memorial bench honoring 13-year-old Madeline Soto, whose tragic death in February 2024.
The teen was reported missing and later found dead. Her mother's boyfriend, Stephan Sterns, is now charged in connection to her death and faces dozens of counts of sexual abuse.
But amid the grief, neighbors, businesses, and strangers have come together to create something lasting: a place to remember, reflect, and rise for change.
The bench already exists along the shoreline of Lakefront Park. It now holds a plaque dedicated to Madeline 'Maddie' Soto and reads 'Forever Loved, Forever 13.'
The plaque was issued by St. Cloud Parks and Recreation 'Bench Tribute Program' after help with donations through community T-shirt drives allowing advocates to purchase it.
Advocates for Maddie said the bench is now more than just a seat. It's a symbol that allows moments of quiet reflection and a permanent tribute to a life gone too soon.
'This is an amazing tribute to her that all in the community will be able to visit and reflect upon her life,' said Chris Robertson, Mayor of St. Cloud.
Jenny Esquivel, an advocate for Madeline, said the memorial is just the beginning, plans are already in motion for workshops, youth programs, and legislation driven by Madeline's story.
'Next on the agenda is certifying an educational curriculum so that different agencies can implement it to teach children how to protect themselves. We are heading in the legislative direction. That is still in the works,' said Esquivel.
For many, the bench has already become a sacred space. A place to talk. A place to cry. A place to hope.
'It represents hope and change. The many things that we have worked on,' said Esquivel.

St. Cloud to notify more than 7 thousand residents impacted by ransomware data breach
Thousands of St. Cloud residents are getting letters in the mail telling them their personal information was compromised duringa 2024 ransomware attack. According to the city, the attack happened between March 17th and March 25th last year when an unauthorized actor tapped into city systems to access personal information. The city said after the attack, they hired a third-party company which quickly started to investigate. The company found names, addresses, medical information, taxpayer IDs, and social security numbers were compromised. In total, 7,797 people were impacted, according to a city spokesperson. After the investigation, the city said it, worked to send notices as quickly as possible to those impacted. Letters were mailed to affected residents last week. 'Their data is probably sitting on the dark web right now, and it's likely being sold in some way, shape, form, or fashion to other threat groups,' said John Anthony Smith, Founder of Fenix 24, a company that has helped hundreds of organizations recover after data breaches. According to Smith, St. Cloud is just the latest local city to become a target. 'Counties and cities are maintaining tax records. They're maintaining property records. They're maintain portions of these records that don't get disclosed publicly. And therefore, threat actors are commonly going to target these types of files,' said Smith. According to a statement published to the city's website, 'As a precautionary measure, the City encourages individuals to remain vigilant against incidents of identity theft by reviewing account statements, credit reports, and explanations of benefits for unusual activity and to detect errors. Any suspicious activity should be promptly reported to your credit card company, bank, or other applicable institution.' Smith suggests a few extra measures, too. 'I would suggest to citizens that they get credit monitoring, they freeze their credit reports, and lastly you should probably change how you buy things You should be using credit cards not debit cards.' Smith said credit cards offer greater protection against fraud than debit cards, which is why he recommends the switch. He said anyone who receives a letter from the city should be extra skeptical of messages or emails from unknown accounts asking for personal information. The city is now offering one year of credit monitoring to anyone impacted by the breach and has created a dedicated toll-free number where people can get their questions answered. That toll-free assistance line that has been established at 1-(800) 939-4170, available Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time (excluding major U.S. holidays). Police probe ground, abandon buildings in search for Madeleine McCann
June 4 (UPI) -- German and Portuguese police Wednesday continued their search near the Praia da Luz resort in Portugal for Madeline McCann, the British child missing since 2007. The search efforts included using ground penetrating radar focused on some derelict structures a few miles from the site where Madeline went missing. German federal police requested the renewed search that began Tuesday as they seek evidence against the imprisoned prime suspect, Christian Bruckner. He is serving time for raping a 72-year-old woman near Praia da Luz in 2005. The search is scheduled to continue until Friday. Bruckner lived in one of the houses being searched when Madeline went missing. Roughly 30 officers are conducting the search using drones and a digger and well as the ground penetrating radar. The radar employs electromagnetic radiation pulsed into the ground to detect objects or changes beneath the surface, reducing the need to dig as much as other wise would be required. Bruckner has denied being involved in Madeleine's disappearance. He was officially identified as a suspect in 2022. The search is focused on 120 acres that include abandoned buildings between the Ocean Club resort where McCann and her family were staying and the house Bruckner lived in. Bruckner sometimes worked as a handyman at the Ocean Club. Madeleine disappeared May 3, 2007 after her parents left her sleeping in a room with her twin 2-year-old siblings. The last search before this was in 2023 near the Barragem do Arade reservoir roughly 30 miles from Praia da Luz.
