Members of the WPS Traffic Enforcement Unit conducted a joint enforcement operation in conjunction with the OPP at several locations along the expressway on Wednesday. A total of 84 tickets were issued for speeding, equipment violations, and other violations.

Essex OPP hiring youth for policing summer job

Essex County OPP are hiring a Youth in Policing Initiative student for a summer job. Applicants must live in Essex County OPP's service area. Young people aged 15-18 with clean criminal records that are returning to school in the fall are welcome to apply, all you have to do is pen an essay that dictates why you would be the best candidate, and submit your resume. The Youth in Policing Initiative is funded through the province of Ontario, and delivers police forces the opportunity to promote youth participation as well as promoting careers in policing. Windsor paddleboarder charged on Detroit River

The Essex County OPP Marine Unit has charged paddleboarder on the Detroit River over the Victoria Day long weekend. On Saturday at 3 p.m., the marine unit was on patrol along the Detroit River in Lasalle and officers say they saw an individual on a paddle board without a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). The 28-year-old man from Windsor was charged under the Canada Shipping Act (CSA with: Operating human-powered pleasure craft without personal flotation device or lifejacket of appropriate size for each person on board. Police say a life jacket or (PFD) is required on a stand-up paddleboard in Canada. While leashes are recommended for safety, they cannot be used as a replacement for a lifejacket or PFD. 'Like any activity in any environment, make sure you 'know before you go' and that you match your adventure with your ability level and the conditions that day. Make sure that you have the right equipment to have fun safely,' say OPP in a news release. Essex County OPP officers continue their enforcement this Victoria Day long weekend as they participate in the province-wide campaign for Canada Road Safety Week and Safe Boating Week. You will continue to see extra patrols around the clock to keep the motoring public and waterways safe. The OPP Victoria Day Long Weekend Campaign runs until May 19. Wheatley man charged with 18 ‘smash and grab' break-ins

A 38-year-old Wheatley man has been charged after a lengthy break and enter investigation in Kingsville and Leamington. Essex County OPP along with the Essex County Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) investigated 18 'smash and grab' break and enters that occurred at various businesses between Aug. 29, 2024, to Jan. 13, 2025. As a result of the investigation, the man has been charged under the Criminal Code with: Break, Enter a place - with intent to commit indictable offence (two counts) Break & Enter commit Theft (sixteen counts) Mischief Under $5,000 (sixteen counts) Possession of Break-In Instruments (eight counts) Disguise with Intent (fourteen counts) The accused has been released from police custody and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice to speak to the charges on June 27, 2025.
