Big names, bold mission: W7F to kick off women's soccer series with a social twist

LISBON, May 14 (Reuters) - World Sevens Football (W7F) isn't just rolling out a $5 million women's soccer tournament in Portugal next week — it's launching twin social drives, "Community Champions" and "Rising 7's", which, it says, are aimed at tackling gender gaps in football. The Rising 7's initiative will directly target the well-documented phenomenon of girls abandoning sports during adolescence, organisers say. Nearly 100 under-13 players will participate in clinics at Estoril Praia Academy, receiving coaching from former stars including Tobin Heath, Laura Georges and Caroline Seger. "Participation in sports is a powerful avenue for girls to build confidence," said Aly Wagner, W7F's Head of Strategy and former U.S. international. Community Champions will provide $10,000 grants to three local non-profits - CAIS, Fundacao Benfica, and Girls for Girls Portugal - organisations working to increase girls' access to football and advance women in the sport. The social programmes complement W7F's core offering - a fast-paced tournament featuring eight professional clubs competing for the largest prize pool in women's club football history. Following Portugal, the series will expand to North America later in 2025, organisers say. Eight of Europe's biggest clubs — including Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Ajax Amsterdam — will battle for the inaugural tournament from May 21-23. Featuring lightning-fast 15-minute halves, a half-sized pitch and rolling subs, the women's seven-a-side showdown promises fireworks, with $2.5 million awaiting the winners. The format sees teams split into two groups before a final-day shootout.

Estoril to Wear Senna-Inspired Kit to Mark Late Brazilian's First F1 Win

Portuguese top-flight side Estoril Praia will swap their traditional yellow and blue strips for the green and yellow of the Brazilian flag on Saturday to mark the 40th anniversary of the late Ayrton Senna's first Formula One Grand Prix victory. The special kit, featuring the colors of Senna's iconic helmet, will be worn when Estoril face Braga in Portugal's Primeira Liga in honor of the Brazilian's breakthrough triumph at the Estoril circuit in 1985. The three-times world champion, who died in a crash at Imola in 1994, mastered torrential conditions at the circuit to claim the first of his 41 grand prix victories. "Estoril Praia pays tribute to the person and athlete who marked a generation with three world championships for McLaren, whose connection to the municipality of Cascais and Portugal is unequivocal," the club said in a statement. In another tribute last weekend, the late driver's nephew Bruno drove the Lotus Type 97T which Senna piloted to victory at Estoril as part of a demonstration at the Goodwood Festival in England. The car will also be on display at the Estoril circuit on Sunday and Monday.

Portuguese soccer team to honor Ayrton Senna with special one-off jersey

A Portuguese soccer team will honor Formula 1 legend Ayrton Senna with a special one-off jersey to mark 40 years since his first race win. The Brazilian earned a first victory of what would go on to be a glittering career at the Circuito do Estoril on April 21, 1985 and Estoril Praia, who play in the Primeira Liga — Portugal's top division — will wear a kit dedicated to it when they play Braga on Saturday. Advertisement The shirt is based on the design of Senna's iconic green, yellow and navy helmet while also incorporating the classic black livery of the Lotus he drove to the chequered flag. 'Ayrton is an idol for Brazil,' said Vinicius Zanocelo, the only Brazilian in the Estoril Praia squad. 'It's a great honour to pay tribute to him in this way. 'I was very happy to be able to celebrate someone so important to me and to my country. Senna is seen as a hero because he transmitted a lot of happiness to a people who sometimes lived with a lot of difficulties. The kit is very beautiful.' 'For Estoril Praia, this means honouring Ayrton Senna. On the other hand, it's remembering a legacy that was born here through the driver's first ever victory in Formula 1, the greatest exponent of motorsport, and a person who chose to spend a large part of his life in the municipality of Cascais and in Portugal.' 'We are very proud that Ayrton Senna's victorious career began in Estoril, on that unforgettable rainy afternoon, the memories of which are and will be passed down from generation to generation, both by the people of Cascais and by all Portuguese who are passionate about motorsport.' Senna went on to win 41 grands prix en route to three world championships before his death at Imola in 1994. Estoril are ninth of 18 teams in Primeira Liga with five games of the season to go.
