Texas' 5-run fifth inning propels Longhorns to 7-1 victory over Houston Christian in Austin Regional
Associated Press AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas turned six hits and an error into a five-run fifth inning to break open the game, and the No. 2 national seed Longhorns defeated Houston Christian 7-1 in the Austin Regional on Friday. The Longhorns (43-12) play the winner of a game between UTSA and Kansas on Saturday. The Huskies (32-24) meet the loser in an elimination game. Texas, making its NCAA-record 64th tournament appearance, capitalized on three Houston Christian errors and scored six unearned runs. All five of the Longhorns' fifth-inning runs came with two outs. Jonah Williams reached on an error and Ethan Mendoza singled to start the inning, and then four two-out singles and Will Gasparino's double put the Longhorns up 7-1. Texas coach Jim Schlossnagle gave left-hander Ethan Walker his second start of the season against the No. 4 regional seed Huskies. That allowed Texas to hold back established weekend starters Ruger Riojas and Luke Harrison. Walker, who held Tennessee to one run in 4 1/3 innings of relief in the Southeastern Conference Tournament on May 22, gave up two hits and no runs in 1 2/3 innings. Schlossnagle then went to Grayson Saunier and Hudson Hamilton. Each worked 3 2/3 innings, and they combined to hold the Huskies to a run on six hits and a walk. Houston Christian starter Parker Edwards went 4 1/3 innings and allowed seven hits and two walks. The Longhorns beat Houston Christian for the second time this season. They won 12-2 on April 8 in a game shortened to seven innings by the run rule. ___ AP college sports: recommended

Longhorns ride big 5th inning to opening NCAA regional win over Houston Christian
Longhorns ride big 5th inning to opening NCAA regional win over Houston Christian The Texas Longhorns bats have been quiet for the past month. And things started slow in the first game of the NCAA regional in Austin at UFCU Disch-Falk Field against Houston Christian. But an error and six hits blew the game open in the fifth inning, as Texas scored five runs and cruised the rest of the way to a 7-1 win to open the postseason. The Horns opened the scoring in the third inning on an Ethan Mendoza ground out that scored center fielder Will Gasparino. An error on a Max Belyeu grounder to second scored scored two-sports star Jonah Williams. Houston Christian scratched out a run in the top of the fourth on Jeremy Rader's double to score Matthew Leiterman. But Texas blew the game open in the bottom of the fifth. Kimble Schuesslerr singled to left to score Williams and Mendoza scored. Second baseman Adrian Rodriguez singled to center to score Schuesslerr. Casey Borba singled to center to plate Rodriguez. Gasparino then doubled to drive in Jalin Flores, who had reached on an infield single. Texas will face the winner of tonight's matchup between UTSA and Kansas State on Saturday at 8 p.m. CT. Where went wrong in No. 1 seeded Texas' upset loss to Tennessee at SEC Tournament
Where went wrong in No. 1 seeded Texas' upset loss to Tennessee at SEC Tournament Texas was eliminated by Tennessee, 7-5 in extra innings. No. 2 Texas Longhorns baseball's SEC Tournament hopes ended abruptly Thursday with a 7-5, 12-inning defeat to No. 21 Tennessee Volunteers, as defensive lapses and late-game pitching woes proved decisive. Texas surged ahead early, building a 4-0 lead behind Ethan Mendoza's two-run triple and aggressive base-running. But momentum shifted in the fifth when a fielding error by shortstop Jalin Flores extended the inning, allowing Tennessee to score twice and cut the deficit in half. The miscue, which should have ended the frame with a double play, opened the door for the Vols' comeback. The Longhorns' decision to use a bullpen game also affected their performance. Starter Ethan Walker was pulled after four and a third innings, forcing Texas to rely on a string of relievers who struggled to contain Tennessee's offense in the later innings. As the game wore on, the Texas bullpen faltered, allowing the Vols to tie the game and eventually take the lead in the 12th. Offensively, Texas failed to capitalize on key opportunities, stranding runners and going quiet after the fourth inning. Tennessee's defense made several clutch plays to keep the Longhorns off the board late. Part of the problem can be tied to Head coach Jim Schlossnagle prioritizing resting main starters for the NCAA Tournament. Starter Ethan Walker in his first outing of the year was among those rested. While Walker performed well, this approach meant Texas did not use its top arms late in the game. The Texas bullpen struggled in the later innings, especially as the game extended into extra frames. Key relievers like Dylan Volantis, usually reliable, faltered under pressure, allowing Tennessee's Gavin Kilen to drive in all three extra-inning runs that decided the game. Ultimately, defensive errors, a taxed bullpen, and missed offensive chances combined to derail Texas' tournament run. The Longhorns will look to bounce back in time for the NCAA tournament and will look to potentially host a regional in Austin. Follow us on X (formerly Twitter) at @LonghornsWire.
