Texas' 5-run fifth inning propels Longhorns to 7-1 victory over Houston Christian in Austin Regional

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas turned six hits and an error into a five-run fifth inning to break open the game, and the No. 2 national seed Longhorns defeated Houston Christian 7-1 in the Austin Regional on Friday.
The Longhorns (43-12) play the winner of a game between UTSA and Kansas on Saturday. The Huskies (32-24) meet the loser in an elimination game.
Texas, making its NCAA-record 64th tournament appearance, capitalized on three Houston Christian errors and scored six unearned runs.
All five of the Longhorns' fifth-inning runs came with two outs. Jonah Williams reached on an error and Ethan Mendoza singled to start the inning, and then four two-out singles and Will Gasparino's double put the Longhorns up 7-1.
Texas coach Jim Schlossnagle gave left-hander Ethan Walker his second start of the season against the No. 4 regional seed Huskies. That allowed Texas to hold back established weekend starters Ruger Riojas and Luke Harrison.
Walker, who held Tennessee to one run in 4 1/3 innings of relief in the Southeastern Conference Tournament on May 22, gave up two hits and no runs in 1 2/3 innings. Schlossnagle then went to Grayson Saunier and Hudson Hamilton. Each worked 3 2/3 innings, and they combined to hold the Huskies to a run on six hits and a walk.
Houston Christian starter Parker Edwards went 4 1/3 innings and allowed seven hits and two walks.
The Longhorns beat Houston Christian for the second time this season. They won 12-2 on April 8 in a game shortened to seven innings by the run rule.

UTSA takes down No. 2 national seed Texas 7-4 for first trip to super regionals

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Norris McClure went 3 for 5 with a two-run homer in the first inning and UTSA added five runs in the third to help eliminate No. 2 national seed Texas 7-4 on Sunday night for the Austin Regional championship. UTSA (47-13) advances to the program's first super regionals. The Roadrunners were 0-6 in their first three NCAA Tournament appearances before winning three straight this season, including a 9-7 victory over the Longhorns on Saturday. McClure's sixth home run of the season went over the right-field wall for a 2-0 lead. The UTSA defense came up big on multiple occasions, beginning in the third. James Taussig made a catch at the warning track in left field and quickly got it to the cut-off man for a rocket to third to end the inning on a double play. Ty Hodge lined a shot to center that went off the center fielder's glove to clear the bases for a 6-0 lead. Mason Lytle added a two-out single for a seven-run lead. Lytle, the American Athletic Conference defensive player of the year, made a diving catch on the warning track in center to save a run in the fourth. Gunnar Brown (4-2) allowed only one earned run and six hits in a five-inning start for UTSA. Robert Orloski struck out four in three innings to earn his ninth save. Hudson Hamilton went only one inning in his start for Texas (44-14). The Longhorns were hosting a regional for the 38th time in program history. ___ AP sports:

Borba hits grand slam, 3-run HR as Texas beats Kansas State 15-8 to avoid elimination

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Casey Borba hit a grand slam in the first inning, added a three-run homer in the third and finished with eight RBIs to help Texas beat Kansas State 15-8 on Sunday in an elimination game at the Austin Regional. The Longhorns, the No. 2 national seed, play UTSA in the championship round Sunday night. Texas has to beat the Roadrunners — who sent UT to the loser's bracket with a 9-7 win Saturday — twice to win the double-elimination regional. UTSA, which advanced to a regional championship for the first time in program history, also beat the Longhorns 8-7 in 12 innings on March 18 in the only matchup between the teams in the regular season. Ruger Riojas (9-3) gave up seven runs, including three homers, and hit three batters while throwing a career-high 119 pitches across 7 1/3 innings. Ethan Mendoza led off the game with a double and scored two batters later when Max Belyeu hit the first pitch he saw from Tanner Duke over the left-field wall. Kimble Schuessler and Adrian Rodriguez followed with back-to-back singles and Jalin Flores was hit by a pitch before James Guyette replaced Duke (2-3). Jonah Williams struck out looking before Borba cleared the bases to make it 6-0. Seth Dardar hit a three-run home run in the first before AJ Evasco hit a solo shot as part of a two-run seventh and a two-run homer in the eighth for the Wildcats. Keegan O'Connor's RBI groundout in the ninth capped the scoring. ___ AP sports:

UTSA sends No. 2 overall seed Texas to losers' bracket with 9-7 victory in Austin Regional

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — James Taussig went 4 for 4 with a double and two RBIs to help UTSA send No. 2 overall seed Texas to the losers' bracket with a 9-7 come-from-behind victory at the Austin Regional on Saturday night. Host Texas (43-13) will play No. 3 seed Kansas State in an elimination game Sunday. The winner would have to beat the Roadrunners (46-13) Sunday night and again on Monday to advance to the super regionals. The Longhorns scored five runs in the third inning off UTSA starter Conor Myles and reliever Connor Kelley to take a 6-1 lead. Nathan Hodge had a two-run single and Taussig doubled in the final of four runs in the fifth as the Roadrunners pulled within 6-5. Hodge and Mason Lytle had RBI singles before Garrett Gruell doubled in a run as UTSA scored three more times in the sixth to grab an 8-6 lead. Rylan Galvan hit a solo homer in the seventh to get the Longhorns within a run, but Taussig delivered a ninth-inning insurance run with a two-out single after Lytle's one-out double. Kendall Dove (3-0) got the win with a scoreless fifth inning. Braylon Owens pitched the final four innings and allowed a run on a hit and four walks for his third save. Max Grubbs (6-2) was saddled with the loss after allowing two runs in 1 1/3 innings in relief of starter Luke Harrison, who yielded five runs — two earned — in 4 1/3. ___ AP college sports: ___ AP college sports:
