How Ohio State quarterbacks fared in first practice and other key takeaways
Ohio State is underway in preseason training camp. The Buckeyes began the first of 25 practices on July 31, a stretch that is expected to settle their most high-profile position battle. Both Lincoln Kienholz and Julian Sayin are in contention to replace Will Howard, a veteran signal caller who was a critical piece in their national championship last winter. The opening practice was open to the general public, giving media members and fans a look at Kienholz and Sayin and other areas of the roster. Lincoln Kienholz, Julian Sayin repping with mix of starters Kienholz and Sayin saw reps with a mix of starters during team periods, a result of a split-squad format the Buckeyes have used in recent years. By sorting players into two groups for 11-on-11 drills, they saw more reps, and each of the quarterbacks threw passes to starting receivers at the same time. Kienholz was often with Jeremiah Smith, and Sayin was with Carnell Tate. While both showed off their arm strength, they were not always mistake free. Sayin was intercepted by cornerback Davison Igbinosun. The experience of Kienholz, a redshirt sophomore, shined as he was on target on most of his passes and had a good connection with Smith on a series of late intermediate throws. Ohio State adds quarterback depth The depth at quarterback is more noticeable than three months ago. After having only three quarterbacks available during spring practice, the Buckeyes had six going through drills as camp began. The additions over the summer included Eli Brickhandler, a transfer from Houston Christian, and Trey Robinette and Kolton Stover, a pair of freshman walk-ons. Brickhandler, who threw for 557 yards and four touchdowns at the Football Championship Subdivision level last season, was with Tavien St. Clair in the rotation. The Buckeyes won't have five scholarship quarterbacks like last year, but the depth chart is more filled out. Austin Siereveld taking right tackle reps Ohio State is continuing to look at Austin Siereveld as another option at right tackle. Between position drills and team periods, Siereveld lined up as the right tackle rather than guard. Siereveld made six starts at left guard last season, including in the early rounds of the College Football Playoff, but began handling multiple positions along the offensive line during spring practice. The Buckeyes added Phillip Daniels, who saw four starts at right tackle as a redshirt freshman at Minnesota, to help replace Josh Fryar, but it's evident Siereveld is getting a long look. Ohio State has the benefit of more returning talent on the interior of the line with Luke Montgomery and Tegra Tshabola, allowing them to be flexible with Siereveld. Beau Atkinson makes early impression The start of camp offered the first extended look at Beau Atkinson, a defensive end who transferred from North Carolina after the Buckeyes held spring practice. The size of Atkinson, who is listed as 6-foot-6 and 265 pounds on the roster, is apparent, and he provided an early highlight when he burst into the backfield during a drill to knock down running back James Peoples. It was not a live setting, but Atkinson was explosive off the edge and charged forward with enough momentum that Peoples fell to the turf. He figures to be a significant part of the rotation, if not push to start with either Kenyatta Jackson or Caden Curry. Joey Kaufman covers Ohio State football for The Columbus Dispatch.
