Goalscorers embody fresh start at Carlisle

Carlisle United head coach Mark Hughes says the two goalscorers in their opening-day win at Woking represent a new start for the club. Forward Luke Armstrong and midfielder Ethan Robson both spent time out on loan in the second half of last season. But Hughes has welcomed them back into the fold and their second-half goals got Carlisle off to the perfect start in the National League. "A lot of lads have come back into the fold and made a statement and said, 'Listen, I really want to be part of what we're doing'," Hughes told BBC Radio Cumbria. "Credit to them, you could very easily think your future is elsewhere but they have got their head down and maybe think differently." This is Carlisle's first season in the National League for 20 years following relegation from League Two and Hughes believes there is a clean slate, and a fresh approach from all, at Brunton Park. "It was a difficult time for everyone at the club, but guys have come back, set their stall out and tried to get in the squad," he said. "I'm pleased I'm seeing that as it shows there's a real energy in the group and a willingness to work hard for the shirt."

Hughes: Blues' win at Woking 'sets the tone' for the season

Mark Hughes says Carlisle United have 'set the tone' for a positive season with their opening-day display at Woking. The head coach feels the Blues' 2-0 win was of a standard they must now allow to dip across the National League campaign. Goals by Luke Armstrong and Ethan Robson made it a winning start to 2025/26. Hughes was pleased with his side's professional display at the Laithwaite Community Stadium. 'Probably the only thing was that we should have won more comprehensively, really, given the chances we had,' he told the News & Star. 'But it's a good performance and a good away performance. Given that it's the first one of the new season, I think it sets a tone for us. Jon Colman's big match verdict on Carlisle United's opening-day win at Woking 'I think we hit a level that we can't dip under anymore. 'It's important that we maintain it now and keep that momentum that we're talking about in terms of performance levels. Mark Hughes talks to legendary commentator and long-standing Woking fan Martin Tyler before the game (Image: Richard Parkes) 'Winning is also a fantastic habit to have and at the moment, if you include the pre-season games, then those games are important now because that momentum has allowed us to come here and really take the initiative.' Armstrong hit United's first goal of the campaign with a clinical finish in the 57th minute before substitute Robson curled home an impressive free-kick. At the other end Carlisle suffered few scares as they got the better of Neal Ardley's hosts. It amounted to a reassuring start as United bid to recover from consecutive relegations and the loss of their EFL status. Hughes added: 'We have to be in the mix right from the off. 'We can't be just off the pace early on because we might not be able to make it up at a later date. 'So, if we can really get a good haul of points in games very early on, then we know there's going to be ups and downs, there'll be some games that we're not quite where we need to be and we might get punished for that. 'But the key is that if we do have setbacks, we bounce back quickly and start another run of momentum if we can.' Hughes felt United's goals typified the conviction in their general display. He added: 'There was a real determination right across the board, which is really important for us. 'I'm very happy with what we produced. It was a challenge. If you give Woking time and space with the threats they've got, and the physicality they've got, then they'll cause you a problem. 'But given the way we played, we didn't allow them any encouragement whatsoever.' Hughes was adamant Carlisle should also have had a 'stonewall penalty' as Armstrong took a boot to the face when trying to force home a chance five minutes after his opening goal. Woking 0-2 Carlisle United - as it happened! But he was otherwise satisfied with things as United also kicked off the campaign with a clean sheet. 'We stood up to the challenge,' he said. 'For the most part, we were comfortable enough. 'When we won the ball back, we were a little bit anxious to get it forward a little bit quickly. I think when we look back on it, I think that's probably the only criticism. 'It's not a huge one, it's just the detail of the game that maybe on occasion we can pick the right pass and the game can open up even more. 'But, overall, I'm very pleased with what we produced.' Carlisle ease to opening-day victory at Woking

Luke Armstrong and Ethan Robson ensured relegated Carlisle started life in the National League with a 2-0 victory at Woking. Goalkeeper Craig Ross kept the home team in the game during a first half in which both sides had goals disallowed, Chinwike Okoli's effort for the hosts being ruled out for offside and Harvey Macadam's for the Cumbrians for a foul. Ross clawed away Regan Linney's 15th-minute curler and then kept out Aaron Hayden's header from an Elliot Embleton corner as the visitors pressed for the opener. However, he was finally beaten 12 minutes after the restart when Jack Ellis played in Armstrong and he made no mistake. The points were secured nine minutes from time when substitute Robson dispatched a fine free-kick to hand manager Mark Hughes an opening-day win.
