Texas announces starter for first game of NCAA Baseball Tournament's Austin Regional

Texas baseball will start lefthander Ethan Walker against Houston Christian to begin NCAA Tournament play on Friday, the team announced Thursday night. Walker won the trust of Longhorns coach Jim Schlossnagle with an impressive outing against Tennessee in the SEC tournament last week. The redshirt sophomore held the Volunteers, who own one of the nation's 20 most prolific offenses, to one earned run in 4⅓ innings of work, striking out three and allowing two hits without issuing a walk. Advertisement Before that, he'd appeared in seven games all season, pitching just 6⅔ innings. He owns a 2.45 ERA for the year. The decision allows Schlossnagle to withhold Ruger Riojas and Luke Harrison, his two established weekend starters. If the Longhorns win on Friday, those two arms will be in position to pitch against higher-seeded teams. GALVAN: How Rylan Galvan turned embarrassment into excellence, became Texas baseball star "You just have to look at that first and then look at our own pitching staff and what gives us the best chance to win the regional," Schlossnagle said on Monday. "And so Ruger and Luke currently are the only two remaining consistent weekend starters for us, so we got to figure out what the best matchup is." Advertisement The top-seeded Longhorns will face 6-foot-5 senior Parker Edwards, a Houston native who spent the majority of his collegiate career as a catcher before making the move to the mound for fourth-seeded Houston Christian this year. He owns a 3.93 ERA on the season in 84⅔ innings of work. Texas baseball vs Tennessee game score: Replay as Longhorns lose in SEC quarterfinals

HOOVER, Ala. — The debut at the SEC Tournament for the Texas baseball team was a short one. Gavin Kilen's two-run double in the 12th inning was the difference for Tennessee in a 7-5 win at the Hoover Metropolitan Stadium. The top seed and the conference's championship during the regular season, Texas was eliminated in the quarterfinal round of the SEC Tournament. Advertisement The 2025 SEC Tournament is a single-elimination competition. Texas had received byes for this event's first two rounds, but the Longhorns have now dropped six straight games at the conference tournaments it has appeared in dating back to the 2022 season. More: Why Texas baseball, Jim Schlossnagle must strike a balance at SEC Tournament In defeat, Texas stuck out 18 times against four Tennessee pitchers. Texas left 10 runners on base and squandered several late opportunities to secure the game-winning run. Texas Longhorns pitcher Ethan Walker (46) pitches in the sixth inning as the Longhorns play the Auburn Tigers in the second game of a three-game series on Friday night at UFCU Disch-Falk Field in Austin, April 18, 2025. Texas vs Tennessee baseball: Live updates Final: Tennessee 7, Texas 5 Three fly balls to center field ended the Longhorns' chance at another rally in Hoover. Texas (42-12) must now wait until Monday to learn its draw for NCAA Tournament, but a top-eight seed seems like a formality for the Longhorns. Advertisement Tennessee (43-15) advances to Saturday's semifinals. The Volunteers will play either Oklahoma or in-state rival Vanderbilt. Mid 12: Tennessee 7, Texas 5 Tennessee leadoff hitter Gavin Kilen is 2-for-6 today, but both of his hits have given the Volunteers a lead in extra innings. In the 10th inning, Kilen hit a solo homer to give Tennessee a 5-4 lead it quickly squandered. Two innings later, he again pushed Tennessee ahead of Texas with a two-run double off of Dylan Volantis. Tennessee reliever Nate Snead will remain in the game to face the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 hitters in the Texas lineup. End 11: Tennessee 5, Texas 5 Texas got two runners aboard with one out, but pinch-runner Jayden Duplantier was caught off second base as Rylan Galvan lined out to the Tennessee shortstop. This game remains tied as we head to the 12th inning. Advertisement Duplantier replaced Casey Borba on the bases. He will remain in the game as UT's new third baseman. Mid 11: Tennessee 5, Texas 5 Tennessee got its leadoff hitter aboard in the 11th inning, but star freshman Dylan Volantis entered the game and struck out three Volunteers. Casey Borba, the No. 9 hitter in the Texas lineup, will lead things off for the Longhorns in the bottom of the 11th inning before Ethan Mendoza and Max Belyeu get their shots at Tennessee reliever Nate Snead. End 10: Tennessee 5, Texas 5 Needing a run to stay alive in Hoover, Texas quickly produced some offense. Rylan Galvan led off the bottom of the 10th inning with a single, and he then scooted over to third base on a throwing error by Tennessee pitcher Brandon Arvidson. Kimble Schuessler then brought Galvan home with his second RBI single of the afternoon. A stolen base got Schuessler to second base with one out, but the Longhorns stranded him there with their 16th and 17th strikeouts. Advertisement Max Grubbs remains on the mound for Texas. The heart of the Tennessee batting order is due up in the 11th inning. Mid 10: Tennessee 5, Texas 4 With two outs in the top of the 10th inning, Tennessee leadoff hitter Gavin Kilen hammered a 2-2 pitch from Max Grubbs into the Texas bullpen. That swing gave Tennessee its first lead of the day. Needed a run to stay alive, Texas will send Rylan Galvan, Kimble Schuessler and Adrian Rodriguez to the plate in the bottom of the 10th inning. The third, fourth and fifth batters in the Texas lineup are 2-for-11 today, and Galvan has struck out four times. Brandon Arvidson remains on the mound for Tennessee. End 9: Tennessee 4, Texas 4 Texas slugger Max Belyeu nearly ended the game in the 10th inning, but his blast to right field was foul. Belyeu later struck out, and Tennessee's Brandon Arvidson has now retired 10 straight batters. The left-hander has struck out nine Longhorns over his 5 ⅓ innings. Advertisement Texas is 1-3 in extra-inning games this season. Tennessee is 1-1. Mid 9: Tennessee 4, Texas 4 After Max Grubbs retired Tennessee in order in the top of the ninth inning, can Texas walk it off? With Dripping Springs native Brandon Arvidson still dealing for Tennessee, Casey Borba, Ethan Mendoza and Max Belyeu are due up for the Longhorns. Texas has recorded one walk-off win this season. At UFCU Disch-Falk Field on April 6, Rylan Galvan's solo homer in the 10th inning lifted UT to a 4-3 win. End 8: Tennessee 4, Texas 4 After forcing SEC Pitcher of the Year Liam Doyle into an early exit, Texas has had little luck against Tennessee reliever Brandon Arvidson. Over 4 ⅓ innings, Arvidson has two-hit the Longhorns. The redshirt sophomore from Dripping Springs has struck out eight batters and issued one walk. Advertisement Arvidson has retired the last seven batters he has faced. Mid 8: Tennessee 4, Texas 4 After Tennessee got its leadoff hitter aboard in the eighth inning, Texas went to its bullpen. New Texas pitcher Max Grubbs quickly got Hunter Ensley, the No. 3 hitter in the Tennessee lineup, to ground into the Volunteers' third double play of the day. Grubbs then struck out Tennessee cleanup hitter Dalton Bargo to end the half-inning. End 7: Tennessee 4, Texas 4 For just the second time today, Texas was retired in order. In the top of the seventh inning, Tennessee also failed to get a runner on base. End 6: Tennessee 4, Texas 4 Texas had a chance to retake the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, but a two-out groundout by Max Belyeu spoiled a pair of two-out singles from Casey Borba and Ethan Mendoza. Texas is outhitting Tennessee by an 8-4 margin today, but the Longhorns have left seven runners on base. Advertisement Texas struck out for the ninth and 10th time this afternoon during the sixth inning. This marks the 27th time this season that an opposing team has registered double-digit strikeouts against Texas. May 22, 2025; Hoover, AL, USA; Texas infielder Ethan Mendoza (5) makes the turn on a double play after forcing out Tennessee designated hitter Levi Clark (30) in the third round of the SEC Baseball Tournament at the Hoover Met. Mid 6: Tennessee 4, Texas 4 The Tennessee offense got to Texas relievers Grayson Saunier and Thomas Burns during the sixth inning, and the Volunteers tied this game on a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly. Tennessee produced two hits against Saunier in the inning and then had batters get hit by a pitch and draw the aforementioned walk once Burns entered the game. End 5: Texas 4, Tennessee 2 Texas got Kimble Schuessler to second base with one out in the second inning. The Longhorns left Schuessler stranded, though, as Adrian Rodriguez and Jalin Flores both struck out against Brandon Arvidson. Advertisement Texas has struck out eight times today. Mid 5: Texas 4, Tennessee 2 Texas lost its shutout bid in the fifth inning after Tennessee rallied behind a costly error by Jalin Flores. Following a pitching change and a delay caused by an umpire injury, Grayson Saunier had two runners aboard and one out. Saunier got Levi Clark to hit a grounder to Flores, but the Texas shortstop fumbled the baseball instead of potentially starting an inning-ending double play. Tennessee cashed in on that mistake when Cannon Peebles hit a two-run single. During the fifth inning, Texas pulled starter Ethan Walker. In his first start of the season, Walker allowed one hit while plunking two Tennessee batters. The 4 ⅓ innings he worked and the 55 pitches he threw were both season-high totals for Walker, who had pitched in relief in his seven previous appearances this season. Game delayed as umpire enters concussion protocol After a pitching change in the top of the fifth inning, there's a delay at Hoover Met as home plate umpire Jason Bradley needed to be replaced. According to the Tennessee team account, Bradley took a foul ball off his face mask and is currently in concussion protocol. SEC Network replays showed that Bradley was hit by a Max Belyeu foul ball in the bottom of the fourth inning. David Savage is now working behind the plate. Savage was not among the umpires who started this game. End 4: Texas 4, Tennessee 0 Texas added to its lead in the fourth inning. After Adrian Rodriguez doubled and moved to third base on a wild pitch, Jalin Flores lifted a ball deep enough into left field to get his freshman teammate home. Ethan Mendoza later provided a two-run triple that chased SEC Pitcher of the Year Liam Doyle from the game. Over 3 ⅔ innings and 79 pitches, Doyle allowed six hits and two walks. Doyle struck out five batters. End 3: Texas 1, Tennessee 0 In the top of the third inning, Tennessee got its first runner aboard when Ethan Walker hit Levi Clark with a pitch. Clark, however, was quickly erased by a double play. Through three innings, Walker has faced just nine batters. Advertisement In the inning's bottom half, the Longhorns were retired in order for the first time today. Tennessee's Liam Doyle has stifled the last five batters that he's faced. End 2: Texas 1, Tennessee 0 Tennessee starter Liam Doyle has thrown 44 pitches over the first two innings as Texas has drawn two walks and worked three full counts against the SEC's top pitcher. The Longhorns got two runners aboard with one out in the second inning, but Doyle struck out two batters to end the threat. Meanwhile, Ethan Walker's pitch count is at 27. Tennessee has not gotten a runner on base against Walker, who has not yet pitched more than two innings in a game this season. End 1: Texas 1, Tennessee 0 Some aggression on the base paths has led to the game's first run. After ending a seven-pitch battle with Tennessee's Liam Doyle with a walk, Texas leadoff hitter Ethan Mendoza tagged from first base on a flyout to center field and successfully made it to second base. That put Mendoza in a position to later score on Kimble Schuessler's two-out single. Advertisement That was the team-leading 51st run scored by Mendoza this season. Mid 1: Tennessee 0, Texas 0 Texas starting pitcher Ethan Walker cruised through his first inning of work at Hoover Met. Facing three batters who all entered the day with batting averages that topped .340, Walker got two strikeouts and a deep flyout to right field. Texas receives championship trophy from Greg Sankey Ahead of today's game, league commissioner Greg Sankey presented the Texas baseball team with the trophy it earned for being the Southeastern Conference's champion during the regular season. Texas went 22-8 in SEC play. Probable pitching plan pits first-time starter against SEC's top arm On Thursday, Ethan Walker and Liam Doyle are expected to start for Texas and Tennessee on the mound. Both Doyle and Walker are third-year left-handers who joined their teams this past offseason as transfers, but that may be where the similarities end. Advertisement Doyle won the SEC Pitcher of the Year award this season, and he has compiled a 9-3 record with a 2.72 ERA, 137 strikeouts and 25 walks over 79 ⅓ innings. Doyle pitched at Coastal Carolina in 2023 and Ole Miss in 2024. This will be the first start of the spring for Walker, who started three times at Walters State during the 2024 season and redshirted in 2023. Walker has pitched just 6 ⅔ innings over seven relief appearances this year, but he has been a reliable bullpen option for UT coach Jim Schlossnagle since he made his Texas debut on April 15. For the season, Walker sports a 1-0 record and a 2.70 ERA. Texas' 5-run fifth inning propels Longhorns to 7-1 victory over Houston Christian in Austin Regional

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas turned six hits and an error into a five-run fifth inning to break open the game, and the No. 2 national seed Longhorns defeated Houston Christian 7-1 in the Austin Regional on Friday. The Longhorns (43-12) play the winner of a game between UTSA and Kansas on Saturday. The Huskies (32-24) meet the loser in an elimination game. Texas, making its NCAA-record 64th tournament appearance, capitalized on three Houston Christian errors and scored six unearned runs. All five of the Longhorns' fifth-inning runs came with two outs. Jonah Williams reached on an error and Ethan Mendoza singled to start the inning, and then four two-out singles and Will Gasparino's double put the Longhorns up 7-1. Texas coach Jim Schlossnagle gave left-hander Ethan Walker his second start of the season against the No. 4 regional seed Huskies. That allowed Texas to hold back established weekend starters Ruger Riojas and Luke Harrison. Walker, who held Tennessee to one run in 4 1/3 innings of relief in the Southeastern Conference Tournament on May 22, gave up two hits and no runs in 1 2/3 innings. Schlossnagle then went to Grayson Saunier and Hudson Hamilton. Each worked 3 2/3 innings, and they combined to hold the Huskies to a run on six hits and a walk. Houston Christian starter Parker Edwards went 4 1/3 innings and allowed seven hits and two walks. The Longhorns beat Houston Christian for the second time this season. They won 12-2 on April 8 in a game shortened to seven innings by the run rule. ___ AP college sports:
