Yankees in pursuit of Eugenio Suarez trade as Diamondbacks slugger continues home run barrage

The market for Eugenio Suarez could be heating up as much as his bat is — with the Yankees squarely in the mix. The Diamondbacks' slugging All-Star third baseman hit his fifth home run in the last three games Monday night during a 6-3 loss to the Astros, giving him an NL-best 36 homers this season. And the Yankees are among the teams who have inquired about the 34-year-old who will be a free agent at season's end, The Post's Jon Heyman reports. The Mariners, who Suarez played for in 2022 and '23, and the Cubs are among the other clubs who have called about Suarez ahead of next Thursday's MLB trade deadline. Suarez, whose 86 RBIs leads MLB, hit two home runs on both Saturday and Sunday and has three multi-homer games in his last six appearances. Since moving Jazz Chisholm back to second and cutting DJ LeMahieu, the Yankees have been left with a massive void at third base as rookie Jorbit Vivas (.173 average) and Oswald Peraza (.150 average) have been splitting time there. The Diamondbacks (50-51) had won four in a row before Monday's loss. They're not completely out of the playoff race at 5.5 games back of the third wild-card spot, but they'd have to jump four teams and their pitching has been brutal. Given Suarez's current performance, age and contract status, Arizona may be compelled to get whatever they can get for him by the deadline while his value is high. While Suarez said he's 'happy' in Phoenix, he addressed the possibility of joining the Yankees last Monday at MLB's All-Star festivities. 'They had the [World Series] chance from last year, but they are hungry still. 'If I go over there, like I said, I would do my best over there. Try to help them win the World Series.' The Yankees (55-45) fell to the Blue Jays on Monday and are now four games behind Toronto for the AL East lead.

Yankees' Aaron Boone Breaks Silence on Eugenio Suárez as Trade Rumors Swirl

Oswaldo Cabrera started the season there, but after he was injured, Jazz Chisholm Jr. moved to the hot corner. Cabrera was never going to be the answer there, and Chisholm's struggles defensively forced the Yankees to move him back to second base and to release DJ LeMahieu. Now Oswald Peraza and Jorbit Vivas are the main options at third base. As the trade deadline approaches, many rumors have linked the Yankees to Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suárez. Suárez was an All-Star this season, and Yankees' manager Aaron Boone spoke on him as the trade deadline is just over a week away. More"He's been a really good power hitter in the league for a long time," Boone told reporters, per New York Daily News' Gary Phillips. "I'm sure he's going to be talked about by a lot of teams," Boone added, per Phillips. "Arizona seems like one of those teams that you don't know what they're doing either. They're kind of on the periphery of contention right now, but obviously have had some guys injured, so we'll see." Suárez has hit 36 home runs this season, and would be a great addition to the Yankees. His defense may not be the best, but what he would add to their offense would outweigh that. He has an .891 OPS at Yankee Stadium in his career, so he could end up continuing on his great season. More MLB: Jarren Duran Trade? MLB Insider Lists Braves As 'Best Fit'

Cubs Looking At Diamondbacks 35-Home Run Third Baseman To Bolster Offense

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The Chicago Cubs are looking to capture the National League Central for the first time since the COVID-19 impacted 2020 season, but the Milwaukee Brewers caught up to them over the weekend. Per reports from The Athletic, the Cubs are keeping tabs on Arizona Diamondbacks power-hitting third baseman Eugenio Suárez. More Photo bySuárez is setting up to be the premier power bat available at the deadline -- if the Diamondbacks make him available, that is. The Diamondbacks entered Monday's game against the Houston Astros coming off a three-game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals in the desert over the weekend and 4 1/2 games back of the final wild card spot in the National League. If the Diamondbacks falter over the next two weeks, they could end up moving Suárez at the trade deadline, and the Cubs should be in the mix for his services. Suárez has hit 35 home runs entering Monday, and if he were traded would be the first player to be traded after hitting 35 home runs in MLB history. The Cubs are looking for an upgrade over Matt Shaw at third base, who is hitting .210 on the season with three home runs. Shaw is a rookie and could be the future of the position for the Cubs down the road. The Cubs would be well served in adding a veteran hitter like Suárez for the stretch run. The next week is crucial for the Diamondbacks, and one slip-up could shift the franchise's focus to trading the All-Star third baseman. The Cubs should be calling on him leading up to the deadline to strike a deal for the slugger before the July 31 deadline. More MLB: Twins Predicted To Cut Ties With Former Gold Glove Outfielder

Eugenio Suárez continues homer binge for D-backs, goes deep for 5th time in 3 games

Associated Press PHOENIX (AP) — Eugenio Suarez continued his power surge for the Arizona Diamondbacks by hitting his fifth home run in the past three games, a solo shot against the Houston Astros on Monday night. The 34-year-old Suárez — who is one of the baseball's most coveted bats as the Aug. 1 trade deadline approaches — leads the National League with 36 homers. He was named the NL Player of the Week for the fourth time this season earlier Monday. Suárez hit two homers against the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday and again on Sunday. The All-Star third baseman is also the third D-backs player to hit seven homers over a six-game span, joining Reggie Sanders (2001) and J.D. Martinez (2017). He's the first to accomplish the feat in the big leagues since Aaron Judge in 2024. Suárez — who is a free agent this offseason — has long been considered one of the top sluggers on the market for prospective buyers at the deadline. But it's unclear if the D-backs will be willing to trade Suárez since they came into Monday's game on the fringes of playoff contention with a 50-50 record. ___ AP MLB: recommended Item 1 of 1

New York Yankees Named Top Trade Fit for 2x All-Star Enjoying Career Year

Despite being one of baseball's biggest powerhouses, the New York Yankees weren't able to convince Juan Soto to re-sign with them in free agency. Yet, the Yankees have been just fine without the superstar slugger, tracking with a 55.6% win rate, compared to last season's club that won 58% of their matchups. Plus, the Yankees still have 63 more games to play in the second half of the season, which gives them plenty of time to round into top form. Not to mention, they'll have the opportunity to make a few roster upgrades ahead of MLB's July 31 trade deadline. Several big names are on the trade block, and the Yankees may be in on two-time All-Star third baseman Eugenio Suarez from the Arizona Diamondbacks. Recently, ESPN's Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan ranked the top 50 MLB trade deadline candidates, and right at the top was Suarez, who they feel has a 90% chance of being traded. Moreso, the MLB experts believe the Yankees are among the best fits to trade for Suarez ahead of this year's deadline. 'Suárez is in a contract year and playing like one of the best players in baseball. Only Cal Raleigh and Aaron Judge have more home runs than his 35. Despite turning 34 years old before the trade deadline, Suárez is sitting near career highs in isolated power and wRC+ (which measures overall offensive performance). His fielding metrics have declined in recent years, but he's still an acceptable defender at third base. Even if the Diamondbacks don't offload all their free agents-to-be, Suárez could be moved because they've got Jordan Lawlar raking in Triple-A and primed to take over at third.' ESPN analysis on Eugenio Suarez While he's 34 years old, it's clear that Suarez is in his prime when it comes to tearing the cover off the baseball. Considering he's already set for free agency at the end of the season, Arizona likely won't be seeking a crazy trade return in exchange for the corner infielder, which could get the Yankees to bite.
