Diamondbacks cool off Nats' bats, but Corbin Burnes departs early

June 1 - Eugenio Suarez hit a long two-run homer in a three-run first inning and the Arizona Diamondbacks held on for a 3-1 win against the Washington Nationals in the finale of their three-game series on Sunday afternoon in Phoenix. Diamondbacks right-hander Corbin Burnes blanked the Nationals on four hits over 4 2/3 innings before the 2021 NL Cy Young winner left with an undisclosed injury. Burnes was tagged with one earned run after his exit. He struck out six and walked one for Arizona, which had lost four in a row and nine of 10. Nationals left-hander Mitchell Parker (4-5) settled in after a rocky start and allowed three runs and three hits over five innings. He struck out two and walked two. The Nationals had won four in a row, scoring at least nine runs in each of those victories. Ketel Marte singled through the left side to start the first for Arizona. He advanced to second on a deep flyout to center and scored on a double to right-center field by Lourdes Gurriel Jr. for a 1-0 lead. Suarez then blasted a 466-foot home run to center to make it 3-0. The round-tripper tied for the fifth-longest in the MLB this season. Burnes departed after giving up a single to CJ Abrams with two outs in the fifth. Jalen Beeks entered and walked James Wood before giving up an RBI single to Nathaniel Lowe that cut the lead to 3-1. Cristian Mena (1-0) pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh for Arizona. Shelby Miller threw a perfect eighth and Justin Martinez pitched the ninth for his fourth save. Parker settled in and retired 14 in a row before Geraldo Perdomo walked to lead off the sixth, and that ended his day. Eduardo Salazar entered and got Gurriel to hit a slow roller to third, but Jose Tena's throw got away from second baseman Luis Garcia Jr., putting runners on the corners with no outs. Salazar escaped the jam, however, finishing with a three-pitch strikeout of Ildemaro Vargas. The game started out well for Burnes, who struck out the side in the first inning. Josh Bell singled up the middle with one out in the second for the Nationals and Robert Hassell III followed with a double to right, putting runners on second and third. Burnes bounced back to strike out Keibert Ruiz and then got Tena to ground out to short to end the threat. Burnes worked out of trouble again in the third after giving up a leadoff double to Daylen Lile. --Field Level Media

Ryne Nelson, D-backs blank Pirates, end 5-game skid

May 27 - Eugenio Suarez and Josh Naylor homered, Ryne Nelson pitched 6 2/3 sharp innings and the Arizona Diamondbacks broke a five-game losing streak with a 5-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday in Phoenix. Nelson (2-1) gave up four hits and struck out four without a walk in his longest start of the season. He made his second start for Eduardo Rodriguez, who was placed on the injured list May 16 due to shoulder inflammation. Four relievers finished up the shutout for Arizona, with Ryan Thompson handling the ninth inning in a non-save situation. Gabriel Moreno had three hits and Ketel Marte had two hits and an RBI for the D-backs, who just finished a stretch in which they played 22 of 25 games against teams with a winning record. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. also collected two hits. The Pirates loaded the bases in the eighth on an error by Suarez at third base and two walks issued by Scott McGough. Justin Martinez entered and retired the side on a strikeout, an infield fly and a groundout. Pittsburgh was shut out for the ninth time this year. Adam Frazier and Alexander Canario had two hits apiece for the Pirates, who had won four of six in their best stretch of the season. Pirates starter Andrew Heaney (3-4) gave up five runs on eight hits in five innings with two strikeouts and three walks. Oneil Cruz led off the game with a check-swing double inside the bag at third and reached third with two outs before Nelson got Spencer Horwitz to ground out to end the inning. The Pirates did not have another runner get beyond first base until Frazier doubled with two outs in the seventh. Randal Grichuk singled and Moreno doubled to open the second off Heaney, who had given up four runs total in his previous three starts. Tim Tawa hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Grichuk, then Marte singled home Moreno for a 2-0 lead. Suarez's 433-foot homer made it 3-0 in the fourth. It was his 15th, tying him with teammate Corbin Carroll for third in the National League. Suarez walked with one out in the fifth and scored on Naylor's homer, which just cleared the right field fence for a 5-0 lead. It was Naylor's sixth long ball of the year. --Field Level Media

Kevin Ginkel (0-2) took the loss. St. Louis took a 4-3 lead in the seventh inning against relievers Ginkel and Jalen Beeks. Jordan Walker led off with an infield single, moved up on a groundout and scored on Victor Scott II's single. Maton escaped the ninth with the help of a great defensive play. After Corbin Carroll struck out, Ketel Marte hit a foul popup that third baseman Nolan Arenado caught crashing into the stands. Then Maton struck out Lourdes Gurriel Jr. to end the game. The Diamondbacks took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Marte's single, Josh Naylor's double and Suarez's two-run single. The Cardinals cut their deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the inning. Brendan Donovan hit a two-out double and Herrera followed with an RBI single to extend his on-base streak to 16 games. Winn's third-inning homer to left tied the game 2-2. The Diamondbacks moved ahead 3-2 in the sixth inning when Suarez hit a double and Pavin Smith singled him home. The Cardinals tied it again in the bottom of the inning. Winn drew a leadoff walk, raced to third on Donovan's single and scored on Herrera's sacrifice fly. --Field Level Media
