Waalitj Marawar (West Coast) hope to answer Kuwarna's (Adelaide) tall timber forwards

Waalitj Marawar (West Coast) co-captain Oscar Allen is set for a return into defence after the Eagles named only two genuine key defenders to tackle Kuwarna's (Adelaide's) triple threat of tall forwards at Adelaide Oval on Sunday. The Eagles will be without five-time All-Australian Jeremy McGovern to tackle the Crows, meaning Allen is a chance to return to defence after kicking two goals in the breakthrough win over Euro-Yroke (St Kilda) at the weekend. Second-year forward Archer Reid is one five potential inclusions alongside top draftee Bo Allan, small forward Noah Long, utility Tyrell Dewar and inside midfielder Clay Hall. The Eagles have lost veteran Jamie Cripps (knee) and recruit Matt Owies (calf) from the side that beat the Saints, meaning they will be forced to make at least two changes. Allen returned to the forward line for the first time in since the Gather Round defeat to Carlton in round five, kicking two goals from 13 disposals — only the second time he's kicked multiple goals this year. Reid was rested from the game after playing the opening nine rounds and returns where he will likely partner reigning All-Australian Jake Waterman in attack. The Eagles are going to need a third tall defender to help pre-season signing Sandy Brock and 200cm backman Harry Edwards tackle Taylor Walker, Darcy Fogarty and Riley Thilthorpe — who have combined for 66 goals this year — with Allen the likely man to swing into defence. Injuries to McGovern (concussion) and Callum Jamieson (hamstring) meant out-of-contract backman Rhett Bazzo was the only other likely option but he won't make the trip to Adelaide. Allen has been named at full forward, but was named at full back last week before playing in attack. Eagles coach Andrew McQualter would not rule out Allen playing in defence against the Crows when asked before main training. 'We talk about it regularly, we're going to play Oscar wherever the team needs him,' he said. 'The Crows do have a tall forward line that they rely on a lot, so we've got to get our contest right in that space and we'll pick a team we think most capable to do that.' Adelaide could go into the game unchanged naming only three inclusions so far in Luke Pedlar, Sid Draper and Billy Dowling. Waalitj Marawar (West Coast) release stirring changeroom footage before and after breakthrough victory

Waalitj Marawar (West Coast) have given a stirring insight into Andrew McQualter's message to players before and after their win over Euro-Yroke (St Kilda), which came just over 24 hours after Adam Selwood's shock death. The Eagles recorded their first win of the season at Optus Stadium on Sunday, a day after the premiership player and club died suddenly on Saturday morning. McQualter told media post-game it had been a 'brutal' day for the club. But in a video released by the club on Wednesday, the first-year Eagles coach told his players that match was about 'more than football'. 'It is going to be an emotional day for a lot of us,' McQualter told the players. 'We will need each other today. We will all drift at times. Come back to someone, come back to someone in this room. 'Because for two or three hours today, we need the whole focus to be about team and our club. 'It is about more than a game, it is about community. Our job today is to represent the West Coast community the best way we possibly can. 'Look after each other, make our people proud. Let's have a great day.' The club also released vision of McQualter's post-game address, where he thanked the players after a 'challenging start to the year'. 'For the last five weeks, you have really seen our game grow and I feel like you have felt the belief grow. But you do need a result sometimes to really feel that belief. 'There are parts of our game every week we are going away, we're learning about and we are growing. 'We put a lot of it together today. It wasn't perfect, there's still lots of stuff we'll get better at, but that was the best four-quarter performance we've played all year, in an incredibly challenging time. 'What everyone in this room, this club has been through the last 24 hours is just sad. It's really sad and challenging for a lot of people in this room. 'I appreciate the support you've all shown for each other. Football clubs are just beautiful places sometimes because they just bring people together. 'I know so many people in this room had deep relationships with Adam. 'The way you played the game today and the way you showed up to work, you should be really proud of every person in this room.' Co-captain Liam Duggan then told the players he felt especially proud to be an Eagle at the weekend. 'Whether we won or lost today, I am proud to be part of this club over the last 48, 24 hours. I'm always proud but especially now,' he said. 'Thanks to everyone. Thanks to you too Mini for sticking fat mate, well done.'

Mid West's Liam Ryan, Tyler Brockman and Jamie Cripps help Eagles post first victory of 2025 season

After 281 days without a win and an 11-game losing streak, Waalitj Marawar's (West Coast) trio of Mid West stars helped the Eagles post their first victory of the season against Euro-Yroke (St Kilda) at Optus Stadium on Sunday. Amid emotional scenes as Waalitj Marawar and their fans paid tribute to premiership player Adam Selwood who died over the weekend, a collective team effort saw the Eagles record a gritty 28-point win over the Saints, 16.12 (108) to 12.8 (80). Geraldton's Liam Ryan and Tyler Brockman were again used to great effect through the midfield in bursts, providing seven clearances between them. Ryan was back to his electric best at times, kicking two goals and amassing 14 disposals, five tackles and 409m gained. Brockman had 16 disposals and six tackles. Before the match, Brockman said he had relished the move into the midfield alongside Ryan in recent weeks. 'I enjoy it. Liam and I have been getting a bit more midfield time for the past two rounds,' he said. 'I think they're going to hopefully keep putting Liam and I in the midfield and let us do our work.' Northampton's Jamie Cripps — who was the only Eagle on the field on Sunday to have played with Selwood — was visibly emotional during the pre-game tribute. He kicked the first goal of the match, after which he pointed to the sky and his black armband. Although the Saints challenged them at times, the Eagles never relinquished the lead and found an extra gear when they needed to. In the earlier Sunday game, Narrm (Melbourne) upset reigning premiers Brisbane at the Gabba by 11 points, 13.10 (88) to 14.15 (99). Geraldton's Demons defender Judd McVee had another understated game, with 13 disposals and six marks. On Friday night, Sydney proved too strong for Carlton at the SCG, prevailing by 16 points, 11.12 (78) to 9.8 (62). Carlton skipper, Patrick Cripps, was again among the Blues' best, kicking two goals and collecting 26 disposals, seven tackles, seven clearances, five inside 50s and 311m gained. Walyulup (Fremantle) had a much-needed win on the road, downing the Giants by 34 points. Dockers midfielder, Jaeger O'Meara from Dongara, is still four weeks away with hamstring and foot injuries. West Coast, St Kilda, Melbourne and Fremantle are known as Waalitj Marawar, Euro-Yroke, Narrm and Walyalup during the Sir Doug Nicholls Round.

Waalitj Marawar (West Coast) forward Jake Waterman reveals how Eagles handled Adam Selwood's death

A raw Jake Waterman has opened up on how Waalitj Marawar (West Coast) dealt with the sudden death of premiership player Adam Selwood, with the big forward revealing the alarming number of ex-AFL players suffering with mental health issues scares the 's***' out of him. Emotions were high as the Eagles finally tasted victory on Sunday, taking down Euro-Yroke (St Kilda) by 28 points at Optus Stadium and snapping a nine-game losing streak to start the season. But the victory was shadowed by the tragic loss of Selwood, whose death came just three months after his twin brother Troy's. The club released emotional statements and tributes in the lead-up to the clash and during the game, Waterman revealing the news shook the playing group barely 24 hours out from bounce down. 'The team meeting had to be pushed back a little bit because everyone was in the room, but I don't know how many of the boys were mentally involved in the captain's run meeting,' he told 6PR. 'Some blokes were mourning. Myself, I was rattled and just felt an emptiness and a lack of motivation. 'Obviously, when game time comes around, the adrenaline gains as the game comes closer, but there was just an overwhelming sense of sadness and grief for a lot of our past players at the moment.' Waterman also took time to reflect on the issue at large and had a poignant message for the industry. 'It's an interesting one to sit back and think about in terms of what it means to past players of this club, because we play this career and you rock up to footy every day to be a part of something bigger than yourself,' he said. 'You've got this routine, you run out on game day, you play in flags, you run out in front of hundreds of thousands of people, and then you retire one day. 'And then 10 years down the track, it feels like nothing can compare to what we go through as footballers, and it scares the s*** out of me, to be honest, that we're losing so many great people who you think are going fine, but they're just not. 'The message is for current players and past players to reach out and get some help because you are loved much more than you know. 'We are losing too many great men.' Eagles coach Andrew McQualter revealed on 7NEWS Selwood had been engaged with the club's WAFL side in recent weeks and that support networks were being put into place to help players and staff. 'This is going to be ongoing for a little while for a lot of people,' he said. 'There were a lot of deep connections with Adam for people throughout our organisation, and he had such a big impact on a lot of people. 'Even as recently as a couple of weeks ago, (he was) helping out with our WAFL program, and he'll be sorely missed.' Lifeline: 13 11 14.

Waalitj Marawar (West Coast) coach Andrew McQualter's concerning update for defender Jeremy McGovern

Waalitj Marawar (West Coast) coach Andrew McQualter has given a concerning update on veteran key defender Jeremy McGovern ahead of a trip to Adelaide. It comes as the first-year head coach revealed Adam Selwood had been working with the club's WAFL side in the weeks before his sudden death. The Eagles saluted for their first victory of the season on Sunday, taking down Euro-Yroke (St Kilda) at Optus Stadium by 28 points. The win even came without their defensive general in McGovern, and they may need to battle without him again on Saturday against Kuwarna (Adelaide) with the 33-year-old still in concussion protocols more than two weeks after taking a blow to the head against Narrm (Melbourne). 'Gov's still in concussion protocols at the moment, and we will just see how this week progresses,' McQualter revealed on 7NEWS. 'The medical team will have full authority over that, and they're experienced in that space. 'We'll work with them and Gov through the week.' It would be a third week on the side lines for the five-time All-Australian. McQualter also said small forward Matt Owies was likely to miss multiple weeks after being subbed out in the first half against the Saints with ice on his calf, but that he expected ruckman Matt Flynn to pull up well from a shoulder complaint. The Eagles' emotional victory came in the wake of the tragic death of Selwood only a day before, and McQualter said the club would be supporting players and staff as an ongoing process across the coming months. 'This is going to be ongoing for a little while for a lot of people,' he said. 'There were a lot of deep connections with Adam for people throughout our organisation, and he had such a big impact on a lot of people. 'Even as recently as a couple of weeks ago, (he was) helping out with our WAFL program, and he'll be sorely missed.' Sunday's victory was also a first since moving west for McQualter, the club producing their worst-ever start to a season with nine straight defeats. And McQualter said he was proud his players could rise to the occasion on an emotional afternoon in front of the home fans and earn their reward for hard work across the past fortnight. 'It was a really difficult day for everyone involved and the football club,' he said. 'We just spoke to our players about playing the game in the right spirit, being great teammates, and that's what our guys were able to do yesterday, and that produced a win for us. 'It was terrific reward for our guys. They've been toiling hard over the last four or five weeks. 'We've put a lot of work into our game, and we've been starting to build a bit of belief without getting a win. 'But to be able to put a fair bit of it together for four quarters and get that result, I'm really proud of the players.'
