Kuwait plays leading role in promoting culture, arts: Bulgarian envoy
KUWAIT CITY, May 25: 'Kuwait has a prominent position in consolidating the role of culture and the arts in the Arab world and beyond. Its openness to the cultures of the peoples of the world is remarkable and deserves everyone's appreciation,' says Bulgarian Ambassador to Kuwait Dimitar Dimitrov. Dimitrov made the statement during the celebration of the 'Day of the Bulgarian Alphabet, Enlightenment and Culture' -- one of the activities of Europe Month in Kuwait. Present at the event were Assistant Secretary General of the National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters (NCCAL) Sheikha Dr. Al-Anoud Al-Sabah, European Union (EU) Ambassador and Head of the EU Delegation to Kuwait Anne Koistinen, a number of EU ambassadors and members of the Bulgarian community. Dimitrov said the selection of Kuwait as the Capital of Arab Culture and Media is due to the prestigious role it plays in the field of culture and media -- both Arab and international. He affirmed that the two countries enjoy a rich history of international cultural activities and cooperation in multilateral forums. He stated 'we must explore opportunities for cooperation in the fields of studying and preserving historical heritage, and exchanging exhibitions and museums. Prospects for cooperation in education and Science must remain at the core of our attention, guided by the successes we have achieved over more than six decades of bilateral diplomatic relations.' He also praised the role of the Language Center at Kuwait University for its valuable support in teaching Arabic to specialists. 'As diplomats, we express our appreciation for Kuwait's achievements in the field of culture, and for the efforts of Kuwaiti entities working in the field of culture and the arts; particularly the Ministry of Information and NCCAL. They support international cultural exchange. They enable those interested in culture and the arts, and the Kuwaiti society in general, to learn about the cultures, traditions and achievements of countries around the world in the fields of Literature, Fine Arts, Music and other cultural activities,' he added. He expressed his deep appreciation for the Ministry of Information and NCCAL for their efforts in this field, and for their support in organizing an impressive cultural event in Kuwait with the participation of prominent artists from Bulgaria, European countries and other countries around the world. He also thanked the House of Islamic Antiquities 'for the longstanding, fruitful cooperation that enabled us to organize a series of influential concerts featuring talented Bulgarian artists in Kuwait.' He reiterated his country's commitment to further strengthen cooperation with Kuwait in the field of cultural diplomacy, emphasizing the importance of culture in building bridges between peoples. He said 'we believe in the power of cultural diplomacy.' Regarding the occasion, he disclosed 'the Day of the Bulgarian Alphabet, Enlightenment and Culture is one of the most important occasions in my country; as our letters, literature and cultural traditions have enabled the Bulgarian people to preserve their national identity among the peoples of Europe through centuries of historical change.'

Spain participates in EU Film Festival in Alexandria with Acclaimed screenings
As part of the cultural celebrations marking Europe Month, the Embassy of Spain in Egypt and the Instituto Cervantes of Alexandria will take part in the latest edition of the EU Film Festival in Alexandria. The festival, running from May 4 to June 5, is part of a broader initiative by the European Commission aimed at supporting and enhancing the quality of European film festivals organized by EU delegations around the world. This year's edition features 26 films from 21 EU countries, to be screened across eight cultural centers in Alexandria. Spain will present two notable works: 'The Blue Star' by Javier Macipe, and 'Everybody Knows' by Asghar Farhadi. 'The Blue Star' will be shown on May 15 at 7 p.m. at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. The film follows Mauricio Aznar, a celebrated Spanish rock musician from the 1990s, who travels through Latin America in search of personal and artistic renewal, escaping the shadow of addiction. Along the way, he encounters Don Carlos, an elderly yet nearly forgotten folk musician. Their unexpected friendship gives rise to a unique and quixotic musical duo. 'Everybody Knows', scheduled for May 18 at 7 p.m. at the Instituto Cervantes in Alexandria, tells the story of Laura, who returns from Buenos Aires to her hometown in Spain for her sister's wedding. What begins as a joyful family reunion quickly unravels into a gripping drama, as hidden tensions and long-buried secrets come to light. Now in its fourth year, the EU Film Festival in Alexandria continues the success of its 2022, 2023, and 2024 editions. Admission to all screenings is free of charge, with English and Arabic subtitles provided to ensure accessibility for local audiences. Each film will be followed by discussions with filmmakers and critics, fostering deeper engagement with the stories and themes presented on screen. This cultural initiative not only showcases the richness and diversity of European cinema but also highlights Spain's ongoing commitment to artistic dialogue and exchange with Egyptian audiences.

EU envoys visit Failaka
KUWAIT: To mark the beginning of Europe Month activities in Kuwait, EU Ambassadors visited Failaka Island - one of Kuwait's most treasured heritage sites. The visit, organized by Kuwait's National Council for Culture, Arts and Letters, in collaboration with the French Embassy and the French Research Centre for the Arabian Peninsula (CEFREPA), highlighted ongoing joint European-Kuwaiti efforts to preserve Kuwait's rich history, which includes a remarkable Hellenistic fortress. Every year, archaeological research missions from EU Member States - currently France, Denmark, Poland, Italy and Slovakia - come to Failaka to join efforts to preserve Kuwait's treasured past, from the Bronze Age to modern times. Among these, the new Franco-Kuwaiti archaeological mission, led by Mathilde Gelin (ArScAn–CNRS/CEFREPA), is currently undertaking excavations focused on the Hellenistic fortress, a site once known as 'Ikaros' during the time of Alexander the Great. This mission, carried out in close partnership with NCCAL and the Department of Antiquities and Museums, aims to deepen knowledge of this period and ensure the preservation of this unique cultural heritage. During the visit, the ambassadors were accompanied by Hassan Al Failakawi, a native of the island and local expert, whose deep-rooted knowledge of Failaka's history greatly enriched the delegation's understanding of the site and its significance. EU Ambassador Anne Koistinen said: 'I am thrilled to begin Europe Month activities in Kuwait this year with this field visit to Failaka. This beautiful island reminds us of the deep cultural ties between Kuwait and Europe. I would like to thank the NCCAL, the French Embassy and the French Research Center for organizing this visit.'
