Israel intensifies military operation in northern and southern Gaza

Israel has intensified its military operation in the north and south of the Gaza Strip. In the southern city of Khan Younis, Israeli troops advanced towards the European Hospital and demolished the medical centre's rear wall, several media reported. Meanwhile the Palestinian Health Ministry said the Israeli military bombed north Gaza's only remaining dialysis centre, the Noura al-Kaabi Kidney Dialysis Centre, which is part of the Indonesian Hospital in Beit Lahiya. The ministry has previously said that over 40% of patients with kidney failure have died since the start of the more than 19-month war due to a lack of access to proper treatment and the destruction of centres. Israeli army chief Eyal Zamir said the expansion of the ground operations will continue until the remaining hostages held by Hamas are released and the defeat of the group. On Sunday, Hamas released a press statement stating that they are ready to being indirect negotiations over the Gaza ceasefire immediately. The militant group said the objective of the talks would be to end the "humanitarian catastrophe" in Gaza, ensure the delivery of aid to the Palestinian people, and achieve a permanent ceasefire accompanied by the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from the strip. Israel has not yet responded to Hamas' statement. On Monday, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer reiterated the urgent need for a ceasefire, the immediate delivery of humanitarian aid to Palestinians in Gaza and the release of the hostages. "Look, the situation is intolerable in Gaza and getting worse by the day, which is why we are working with allies," Starmer said during a trip to Scotland. "To be clear, in saying it's intolerable to be absolutely clear that there needs to be a ceasefire. To be absolutely clear that humanitarian aid needs to get in at speed and at volumes, that it is not getting in at the moment. It's causing absolute devastation. And, of course, to continue our work to secure the release of hostages who've been held for a very, very long time."

Hamas' Gaza Chief Muhammad Sinwar Has Been Eliminated: Israel PM Netanyahu

Last Updated: Muhammad Sinwar was the younger brother of the former Hamas leader in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar, who was killed by Israeli military in southern Gaza last October. Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday said that Muhammed Sinwar, a top Hamas commander and younger brother of slain Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar, has been eliminated. Muhammad Sinwar was the younger brother of the former Hamas leader in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar, who was killed by Israeli military in southern Gaza last October. After his brother's death, he was elevated to the top ranks of the Palestinian militant group. Earlier this month, Israel Defence Minister Israel Katz had claimed that Muhammed Sinwar was 'likely killed" in an airstrike on Gaza. 'Based on all indications, Mohammed Sinwar was killed in a strike carried out on the grounds of the European Hospital in Khan Younis," Katz had said while speaking during a closed-door meeting with parliamentarians. Israel Defence Forces (IDF) had targeted underground infrastructure beneath the European Hospital in Khan Younis, which it said Hamas was using below the hospital, according to The Wall Street Journal. According to the Saudi channel Al-Hadath, Sinwar's body was recently recovered along with the remains of 10 of his aides. The report said that there was evidence that the commander of the Rafah Brigade in Hamas's military wing, Mohammad Shabana, was also killed in the strike. Following the killing of Hamas's top military commander, Muhammad Deif, last July, Muhammad Sinwar took charge of the terror group's military wing. After Sinwar's older brother Yahya was killed by IDF troops, he became the de facto leader of the terror group in the Gaza Strip. Yahya was the mastermind behind the 7 October 2023 Hamas-led attack on Israel that ignited the ongoing war in Gaza. Muhammed Sinwar, born in Khan Younis in 1975, followed in his brother's footsteps and joined Hamas in the late 1980s. He was arrested by Israeli forces in 1991 for suspected militant activity and spent less than a year in jail. He was also imprisoned for several years by the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah during the 1990s. In 2006, Sinwar was part of the Hamas cell that abducted IDF soldier Gilad Shalit. He also previously commanded Hamas's Khan Younis Brigade. (With inputs from agencies) First Published:

Israeli strikes ‘shredding people to pieces' in Gaza: British surgeon

LONDON: Israeli strikes on Gaza are 'shredding people to pieces,' a British surgeon working in hospitals there has told the Daily Telegraph. Tom Potokar, a plastic surgeon working in southern Gaza, said he was at the European Hospital when it was attacked by Israel. Its new offensive has been met by international condemnation, with Gaza's Health Ministry saying hundreds of Palestinians have been killed in recent days. Potokar, who is now stationed at Al-Amal Hospital in Khan Younis, said: 'You have to consider that the Gaza Strip is, geographically, a very small area and yet there are nearly two million people living here. 'So, when you drop ordnance — with the amounts being used and the type of weapons being used in such a small, densely populated area — you are literally shredding people to pieces.' Potokar was forced to move hospital three times in the past week to avoid Israeli bombing. Describing the attack on the European Hospital, he said: 'It is difficult to imagine how human beings can treat other human beings in this way. To see children particularly with horrific injuries and amputations, to see pregnant women requiring major surgery — it's absolute brutality.' Israeli attacks on hospitals have drawn widespread condemnation from humanitarian organizations. The UN Human Rights Office and Human Rights Watch said Israeli bombardment is pushing Gaza's already-damaged healthcare system to the brink of collapse. Potokar was also near an airstrike that hit Al-Amal Hospital. 'It was around 6 a.m. and a massive strike happened about 400 meters from the hospital, with heavy machine gun fire and helicopters,' he said. 'Thankfully, there were no casualties in the hospital, but a huge piece of shrapnel landed in front of the emergency room.' He added: 'What is the West doing, what is the rest of the world doing? Churning out press statement after press statement but nothing is changing. 'This will be a stain on humanity when people look back in years to come, when we say 'how did we allow this to happen?' We've been here before, and no lessons are being learned.' Potokar said: 'The killing goes on, the slaughter goes on and these are people like you and me.'

The Ministry of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs denounced Israel's targeting of the European Hospital in Khan Yunis, Gaza Strip, knocking it out of commission. اضافة اعلان The ministry added that the attack is a blatant breach of both international humanitarian law and international law, as well as the 1949 Geneva Convention relative on the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War. Ambassador Sufian Al-Qudah, the Ministry's official spokesperson, reiterated the Kingdom's unequivocal rejection and strong condemnation of Israel's ongoing aggression on Gaza, its systematic targeting of civilians and civilian-related objects in the Strip, its destruction of essential facilities that provide the Gazans with basic services, and its continued use of siege and hunger as tools to force Palestinians to flee their homes. He issued a warning about the ramifications for regional security and stability of Israel's continuous violations in Gaza and the West Bank. In order to achieve a comprehensive and just peace in the region, Ambassador Al-Qudah urged the international community to fulfill its moral and legal obligations, force Israel to immediately stop its aggression against Gaza, open the crossings used to deliver humanitarian aid to the Strip, and respect the Palestinian people's legitimate right to establish their own independent, sovereign state on pre-1967 lines with East Jerusalem as its capital.

He added: "We must stop this services are collapsing, shelters are constantly shrinking due to displacement and demolition orders, families are forced to live in tents in conditions far below standards that preserve their human dignity, and severe hunger is exacerbated by the Israeli blockade."He pointed to the Israeli army's bombing on May 13 of two of the largest hospitals in Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip, the Nasser Medical Complex and the European Hospital, rendering the latter out of service.Türk stressed that hospitals are protected at all times, and are even more vital during wartime. He added, "The killing of patients, people visiting their wounded or sick loved ones, emergency workers, or other civilians seeking shelter is as tragic as it is outrageous. These attacks must stop."He explained that international law requires Israel to ensure constant care is taken to preserve civilian lives.Türk added, "Surveillance camera footage broadcast by international news agencies, taken immediately before at least one airstrike on the European Hospital, shows children, women, and men wandering around." In the area, apparently unaware of the imminent attack, their presence was highly likely known, given the ongoing aerial surveillance over the Gaza Strip, particularly the targeted areas.Türk emphasized that the laws of war, based on the Geneva Conventions, are "sacred," and that exceptions to human rights protections, including the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, oblige all actors to strictly adhere to these rules.
