Ryanair introduces more generous bag allowance
Ryanair has announced an increase in its 'free' cabin baggage allowance on European flights.
The Continent's biggest low-cost airline currently allows passengers to bring one bag which measures 40cm x 25cm x 20cm onboard and place it under the seat in front at no extra charge.
But the Irish carrier will soon increase the allowance to bags measuring up to 40cm x 30cm x 20cm – which equates to 24 litres.
A Ryanair spokesman said: 'This change will be implemented over the coming weeks, as our airport bag sizers are adjusted.'
The shake-up comes after Airlines for Europe (A4E), an industry association representing carriers including Ryanair, Lufthansa, Air France and British Airways, announced new standards for under-seat baggage across its members' flights.
A4E, which represents 70 per cent of European air traffic, said it would enable customers to bring a couple of extra T-shirts on their holidays.
It follows a vote by the European Union's transport committee last month in favour of changes to passenger rights rules to allow travellers to bring an under-seat bag measuring up to 40cm x 30cm x 15cm and a small carry-on bag weighing up to 7kg at no extra cost.
However, the decision needs approval from 55 per cent of EU member states before it can be implemented.
'The same clear rules'
Ourania Georgoutsakou, A4E's managing director, said its changes would 'align A4E members with the decision of member states made last month and bring more clarity to passengers across Europe'.
She added: 'From city-hoppers to family travellers, everyone will benefit from the same clear rule across our members' networks.'
EasyJet, one of Ryanair's main competitors, said it would not be changing its 'free' under-seat cabin bag rules from its larger allowance of 45cm x 36cm x 20cm. WizzAir also will not change its allowance, which sits at the increased Ryanair size.
