Eve McMahon finishes 14th at ILCA European Championships in Sweden

Ireland's Eve McMahon has finished 14th after the final day of racing at the ILCA European Championships in Marstrand, Sweden. The 21-year-old had ground to make up after Friday's Gold fleet races, sitting 20th overall after a black-flag disqualification in the opening race. The Howth sailor got off to a flying start on Saturday, placing first in the opening race, and was able to discount the 48-point penalty on the completion of the day's second race. However, she could only manage 32nd in that penultimate running, and came home in 26th in the final race to finish 14th overall but third in the under-23 standings. READ MORE In the ICLA 7 class, Ewan McMahon had a similarly impressive start to the day, finishing third in the opening race before taking 10th and 19th thereafter to finish 12th overall. Finn Lynch placed 19th overall, finishing eighth, 28th and 31st across the day's three races.

Ireland's Eve McMahon makes move on second day of European Championships

Ireland's Eve McMahon jumped to the leading pack of contenders on the second day of the European Championships for the ILCA 6 women's one-person dinghy in Sweden after a solid day of racing. Her start to the series saw her disqualified from the opening race on Monday that incurred a maximum points penalty. However, once three races were sailed on day two, the single event discard allowed her to drop that score. A 10th place followed by a second, delivered a nice bounce in the standings up to fifth place overall. READ MORE The Howth sailor made Irish sailing history in May when she won bronze at the world championships in China and is looking to close out her 2025 season on a similar high. Meanwhile, her older brother Ewan has also had a strong start to his ILCA 7 men's event though slipped slightly in the standings to sixth overall after day two in Marstrand when he scored second and 10th places. Any top 10 place by the end of the qualification round that ends on Wednesday would be a commendable score and a solid attacking base for the three days of Gold fleet racing that follows before the championship outcome is decided on Saturday. For Ewan McMahon, his current standing sees him ahead of double Olympian team-mate Finn Lynch who is currently 12th European in 15th overall. Notably, McMahon is only two points off first overall while Lynch is only eight points behind his team-mate. The entire 153-boat men's fleet is split into three flights to manage the qualification round but all the top boats will race together from Thursday in the final series. The picturesque Marstrand venue north of Gothenburg on Sweden's west coast is proving highly tricky as a strong swell with light winds is making spotting windshifts difficult. After a breezy start to the championships on Monday, the forecast for the remainder of the week is for continued light conditions that raise the risk of deep results so the sailors will maintain conservative strategies to avoid high scores.

Finn Lynch takes bronze medal at Kieler Woche festival in Germany

Olympic sailor Finn Lynch kept up his recent good form when taking the bronze medal in the ILCA 7 class at the Kieler Woche sailing festival in Germany. The 29-year-old from the National Yacht Club in Dún Laoghaire finished the medal race behind Italian sailors Lorenzo Brando Chiavarini and Dimitri Peroni to secure a second podium finish in the Sailing Grand Slam series, having also taken bronze at the Princess Sofia Regatta. Lynch also finished 15th at the World Championships in China and now heads to the USA with Irish team-mate Ewan McMahon (Howth YC) for the LA Sailing Grand Slam. In the 49er class, Olympians Robert Dickson (Howth YC) and Seán Waddilove (Skerries SC) led for much of the medal race before finishing second and taking fifth overall. READ MORE The pair now travel to Poland for Gdynia Sailing Days, a key regatta on the road to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Gdynia will host the 2027 49er World Championships and is a likely Olympic trial venue.

Ewan McMahon shines at French Olympic Week event in Hyeres

Ewan McMahon delivered a career-best performance with a tenth-place finish overall at the 56th French Olympic Week. Competing in the ILCA 7 class from an original fleet of 109 boats in Hyeres in the south of France, and in a race featuring world number two Duko Bos of the Netherlands and world number nine Jonathan Vadnai of Hungary, the Howth Yacht Club sailor capped his week with a strong sixth place in the medal race, which is his first of the LA 2028 Olympic cycle. "I'm pleased with my performances this week on the water in Hyeres," said McMahon. "Conditions were challenging, leading to some high-stakes racing, but overall I'm delighted to have made my first medal race for the LA 2028 cycle. "The race was tight and demanding but also a lot of fun, and a great learning experience. This is another important stepping stone for me, and I'm really looking forward to the rest of the season." McMahon's sister, Paris 2024 Olympian Eve McMahon, also raced in Hyeres but narrowly missed out on the medal race with a 13th place finish overall in the ILCA 6 fleet. The Irish ILCA squad, which includes Paris Olympian Finn Lynch as well as the McMahon siblings, will next compete at the ILCA World Championships in Qingdao, China from 10–17 May.
