Gary Neville left stunned by Liverpool after 'incredible' £10m transfer
Gary Neville has been left stunned by Liverpool raking in £10million for Trent Alexander-Arnold - despite the full-back only having one month remaining on his contract. Real Madrid announced the signing of the full-back ahead of the transfer window opening. Alexander-Arnold, 26, heads to the Spanish capital to link up with Los Blancos in time for the beginning of the Club World Cup. Real have been keen to secure his signature early, and saw an approach to the Reds turned down in January. The new La Liga star has signed a six-year contract at the Bernabeu and Les Merengues handed Liverpool an £8.4m fee. The Reds also save a month of Alexander-Arnold's salary as Real Madrid pick up the tab to see the Anfield side earn a tidy £10m package. The Spanish giants will be relieved to have a right-back at their disposal having seen Federico Valverde and Lucas Vasquez fulfill the role after Dani Carvajal was ruled out for the season. New boss Xabi Alonso will be able to call upon Alexander-Arnold from the beginning of his tenure. Ex-Manchester United captain and Salford City co-owner Neville is in disbelief at the deal. Though, he can understand the thought process the Club World Cup hopefuls went through. "Honestly, no, I mean, I'm stunned by that really, that £10m has changed hands for, but there is £100m pounds at stake in this World Club Championship and Real Madrid have got a great chance of doing it," he said on the It's Called Soccer podcast on the US Overlap channel. "So you imagine if he plays in this tournament, they haven't got a right back that's playing there naturally at this moment in time. So it could be money well spent in four or five weeks. "I just find it crazy that you're spending £10m to have a player for five, six games. It's incredible." Neville has been impressed with Liverpool's work so far this summer. The Reds have signed Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen and look set to add Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez to their ranks too. He said: "I think when you're talking about winning the league, what is it that improves you? I mean, the only thing that's going to improve you when you win the league is signing world-class players, or players that have got the potential to be world-class players. So signing Wirtz is fantastic. "Frimpong and then there's talk of Kerkez as well, deals with their right and left-back situations. So to get those three done, if they were to get those three done quite quickly, would be smart business. But I wouldn't have expected anything else from Liverpool. "Maybe slightly surprised that they've gone so heavy on Wirtz in terms of the fee. They don't normally go that big, but Slot deserves it, by the way. He waited 12 months for a player to sign." Man Utd star urges Ruben Amorim to reconsider major transfer decision
Amad Diallo has urged Ruben Amorim to reconsider his stance on Manchester United outcast Alejandro Garnacho. Amorim informed Garnacho before United's final Premier League game of the season that he can leave the club this summer. It was later reported that Amorim effectively kicked Garnacho out of the club in front of his teammates in a meeting at Carrington. Garnacho has made 144 appearances for Manchester United since breaking into the first-team in 2022 and was once thought of as one of the brightest talents at the club. But the 20-year-old has been a less influential figure this season and angered Amorim with comments he made following United's Europa League final defeat to Tottenham. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link so we can send you football news tailored to you. Manchester United are open to offers for Garnacho, as they were during the January transfer window when Chelsea and Napoli expressed interest in a deal. Fellow United winger Amad hopes Garnacho stays at Old Trafford, however, and insists the speculation over his future is 'not an issue' for the rest of the squad. Given Amorim's stance on Garnacho, it was a surprise to see the Argentina international feature in Manchester United's post-season game against SEAN All-Stars on Wednesday. Speaking ahead of United's next post-season match against Hong Kong, Amad said: 'Alejandro is a really good player and we need good players in the team. 'I know Garna really well, so I hope to have Garna next season. It is not really a big issue for the team. Everything is good now, I think.' Amorim, meanwhile, said it was 'normal' for Garnacho to be on Manchester United's post-season tour. 'It is not a surprise,' the Old Trafford boss said. 'He is a player of Manchester United, all the players are here. 'Some players are injured and it was better for them not to fly here to play these two games. It is a normal situation.' Ex-Manchester United midfielder Gordon Strachan has backed Amorim's decision to axe Garnacho 'Garnacho's got to go,' Strachan told Esports Insider. 'I think he shows a lack of maturity and needs a real wake-up call. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video 'Manchester United is far too good of a club to listen to him whingeing and whining all the time. 'You wonder what the players at Manchester United are thinking about Alejandro Garnacho's actions. 'He should be looking after his teammates after they lost the Europa League final, not promoting himself with his comments. 'If he doesn't want to be a team player then I think it's best he just goes somewhere else. More Trending 'If the manager decides he's not picking you, you've got to think of the reason, and quite often that starts by looking at yourself. 'In life the best thing to do when something isn't going your way or you have issues is to look at yourself and think whether it stems from you. 'It's rare that players take that stance anymore and look at themselves before whining about their problems.' Brandon Williams breaks silence after suspended jail sentence for 99mph crash
Ex-Manchester United defender Brandon Williams says he is preparing to return to football after being given a jail sentence, suspended for two years, following 99mph car crash while driving without insurance Former Manchester United star Brandon Williams has confirmed he plans to resume his career at a new club next season after last week being handed a suspended jail sentence for a 99mph car crash. The full back, 24, admitted dangerous driving and driving without insurance after his Audi AC collided with a Ford Fiesta near Handforth, Cheshire on August 20, 2023. Last Friday he was sentenced to a 14-month jail term, suspended for two years, at Chester Crown Court and has now broken his silence with a statement issued via his legal team. Recorder Eric Lamb also banned Williams from driving for three years and ordered him to complete 180 hours of unpaid work as part of a community order. 'I would like to thank my legal team headed by Richard Littler KC and Philip Williams of Blackfords LLP for establishing that I was not under the influence of any substance at the time of the accident,' Williams said. 'I have always accepted that my driving that day fell below the standard that is expected of me. It was never my intention to cause injury to anyone but I am responsible for the standard of my driving. I make no excuses. I have learnt from this experience and will ensure there is no repetition. 'I wish to apologise again to those who were involved in the accident. Now that the case has concluded I look forward to resuming my career with a new team later this year.' Williams has not played since a loan spell at Ipswich Town, with his most recent appearance coming against QPR in late December 2023. He spent the entirety of the season just concluded as a free agent having left United at the end of his contract last summer.

Erik ten Hag lands new job six months after Man Utd sacking
Ex-Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is embarking on a fresh challenge in Germany, taking the reins at Bayer Leverkusen. The Bundesliga outfit has handed Ten Hag a two-year deal, filling the managerial void left by Xabi Alonso's departure to Real Madrid. Leverkusen set sights on Ten Hag after their top pick Cesc Fabregas was tied up with Italian club Como. Out of the managerial limelight since his October axing by United, the 55 year old Dutchman brings the experience of securing silverware - the League Cup and FA Cup - during his turbulent stint at Old Trafford. Despite a rocky road that saw United finish eighth under his watch last season, he was shown faith and given a whopping £200million war chest for reinforcements over the summer. Yet, it wasn't enough to keep him in the hot seat past the same year's fall. After saying goodbye to the Theatre of Dreams, Ten Hag spent time away from the pitch, indulging in off-field projects. But he's back in the game after seemingly holding out for the perfect comeback opportunity come summertime. "Bayer 04 are one of the best clubs in Germany and also among the top clubs in Europe. The club offers outstanding conditions, I've been very impressed with the discussions of the management", said an excited Ten Hag about his new adventure. "I've come to Leverkusen to continue with the ambition shown in recent years. It's an attractive challenge to set up something together in this period of change and develop an ambitious team." Sporting director Simon Rolfes said: "With Erik ten Hag we have brought in an experienced coach with impressive success on the pitch. His six title wins at Ajax were exceptional. With three league titles and two domestic cup wins he and Ajax dominated Dutch football from 2018 to 2022." "And Erik demonstrated his quality as a coach with the ensuing success at Manchester United under difficult circumstances at times. Our ideas of football coincide. With technically demanding and dominant football, we want to carry on in the Werkself style and aim for the highest targets in the Bundesliga, DFB Pokal and Champions League." It's official - Ten Hag has inked a deal with Leverkusen until 2027. The 55 year old gaffer, however, might miss the opportunity to manage some of Leverkusen's top talent who secured them the championship in 2024. Defender Jonathan Tah is saying goodbye to stake his future with Bayern Munich on a free transfer. Additionally, attacker Florian Wirtz and promising wing-back Jeremie Frimpong could be heading to Liverpool, which could fill Leverkusen's coffers to the tune of nearly £150m. Erik ten Hag has previously had a stint in Germany as the reserve team manager at Bayern Munich between 2013 and 2015, where he gained valuable experience under the guidance of Pep Guardiola. Speaking on the SEG Stories podcast, Ten Hag shared his thoughts on life beyond coaching, saying: "There are so many other things I could do, "Maybe in football, in a new position as a manager. That's an option. And maybe something completely different." Ten Hag also discussed his involvement in his family's business ventures, revealing that he has been working closely with his brothers and father on their companies, which he thoroughly enjoys and plans to devote more time to.

Newcastle 'looked a really good side'
Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy was impressed by Newcastle's performance in their 1-1 draw against Brighton, despite a lack of clinical finishing. The Magpis needed a late penalty from Alexander Isak to rescue a point at Amex Stadium but Murphy says that was the least they deserved."Eddie Howe said in one of his post match interviews that their problem was they just weren't clinical enough, which is right, but actually it was an accomplished performance," he told Match of the Day 2. "They were better than Brighton."They looked a really good side. The only thing that was lacking, which is unusual with the quality forwards they've got, was that bit of calmness and decision making in the final third. Other than that, Howe should be really pleased with the level of performance."They controlled the game for long periods, and had a lot of joy down the left side. It's just about finding the right option."Ex-Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney added: "I think Newcastle are a really good team and a good watch as well. They dominated the game. They were unfortunate to go a goal behind, but what I liked about them was that they kept pushing. "They kept finding themselves in the right areas and doing the right things - it was just their little details. They have to get those right and then they win games comfortably."Catch up on Match of the Day 2 here
