Punjab closes schools, colleges and universities across the state amid rising border tension
Punjab's Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains Thursday ordered the closure of all educational institutions across the state for the next three days amid what officials described as a 'devolving situation'. The directive applies to all government, private, and aided schools, colleges, and universities. This came as eight missiles from Pakistan were directed towards parts of Jammu and Kashmir, and a blackout was enforced in several districts of Pakistan and Chandigarh. 'In view of the devolving situation, it is hereby ordered that all Schools, Colleges, and Universities — Government, Private, and Aided — across entire Punjab shall remain completely closed for the next three days,' Bains posted on X. In a parallel move, the Chandigarh administration also announced that all schools in the Union Territory will remain shut for the next two days, citing an alert issued by the public relations department. The Kapurthala district administration said all schools, coaching centres, IELTS preparation institutes, and Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) will remain closed on May 9 and 10. However, institutions conducting examinations will continue to function, it said. Panjab University, Chandigarh, also issued a notice Thursday announcing the postponement of all examinations scheduled for May 9, 10 and 12. 'New dates will be announced later,' said the controller of Examinations in an official statement.
