Punjab closes schools, colleges and universities across the state amid rising border tension

Indian Express08-05-2025

Punjab's Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains Thursday ordered the closure of all educational institutions across the state for the next three days amid what officials described as a 'devolving situation'. The directive applies to all government, private, and aided schools, colleges, and universities.
This came as eight missiles from Pakistan were directed towards parts of Jammu and Kashmir, and a blackout was enforced in several districts of Pakistan and Chandigarh.
'In view of the devolving situation, it is hereby ordered that all Schools, Colleges, and Universities — Government, Private, and Aided — across entire Punjab shall remain completely closed for the next three days,' Bains posted on X.
In a parallel move, the Chandigarh administration also announced that all schools in the Union Territory will remain shut for the next two days, citing an alert issued by the public relations department.
The Kapurthala district administration said all schools, coaching centres, IELTS preparation institutes, and Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) will remain closed on May 9 and 10. However, institutions conducting examinations will continue to function, it said.
Panjab University, Chandigarh, also issued a notice Thursday announcing the postponement of all examinations scheduled for May 9, 10 and 12. 'New dates will be announced later,' said the controller of Examinations in an official statement.

‘Space shortage' in Urdu dept: PU student seeks VC's intervention

Chandigarh: A student from the Urdu department at Panjab University has raised concerns over a reported classroom shortage, claiming that academic courses are currently being conducted in a single room. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Avtar Singh, a student affiliated with SOPU, has written to the vice-chancellor highlighting the alleged lack of basic infrastructure in the department. The letter, also marked to senior university officials, said one of the two rooms allotted to the department is being used for office work, faculty space, and storage, leaving only one classroom for all academic activities. The department reportedly offers multiple diploma and certificate courses in Urdu and Persian, along with MA Urdu (first and second year), yet faces a space crunch that, according to the student, is hampering academic quality. The letter points out that several part-time students enrolled in the department are serving officers and artists, and many prominent personalities have been alumni of the department. It urges the administration to immediately allocate additional classrooms and to review overall space utilisation across departments. A pamphlet uploaded on social media criticises the lack of action by both the university and student leaders, calling it a question of dignity and institutional standards.

Work withdrawn from Punjab judge after HC admin recommends his compulsory retirement

Chandigarh: Just days after the Punjab and Haryana high court administration recommended compulsory retirement of Tejwinder Singh, judicial responsibilities have been withdrawn from him. Singh, one of Punjab's senior-most district and sessions judges, was serving as the presiding officer of the industrial tribunal in Patiala. Sources confirmed that since the HC administration has sent the recommendations regarding his compulsory retirement to the Punjab govt, it was a routine exercise to withdraw judicial work from the concerned judicial officer. As per rules, the decision to compulsorily retire Tejwinder Singh would be notified by the Punjab govt. Singh had first come into limelight in June 2019, when he had convicted six persons in the infamous Kathua rape and murder case. While three were awarded life sentence, other three accused were given five-year jail terms. The trial was conducted in his court after the Supreme Court had shifted the case from Kathua to Pathankot, where he was posted as the district and sessions judge. Known for his sobriety and professional competence, Singh joined the Punjab judicial services in 1991 at the age of 23 and made it to the 1993 edition of the Limca Book of World Records for being India's youngest magistrate. He had also served as magistrate in Chandigarh. Singh had also practiced as an advocate at the Punjab and Haryana high court for around a year before joining the judicial services. In March 2017, he completed his doctorate in law from the Panjab University in Chandigarh on "Legislative Measures To Control Terrorism And Their Enforcement With Special Reference To The State Of Punjab: A Critique." Singh had qualified for Punjab judiciary examination in 1989 and started his career as a magistrate in Ludhiana.

Shivaji Maharaj coronation day to be marked with lecture series at ITIs across Maharashtra

The lecture series will be inaugurated with a video message from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The aim is to instil patriotic values and national consciousness among students, he said. Mumbai, Jun 4 (PTI) Maharashtra minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha on Wednesday announced that a lecture series will be held across all Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) in the state to mark the coronation day of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj to be celebrated on June 6. Addressing a press conference at the Mantralaya, the Skill, Employment, Entrepreneurship and Innovation Minister said, 'This initiative is based on the theme of 'rashtrahit' (national interest) and will be conducted under the department's Panch Parivartan (five-fold transformation) mission. Topics such as family awareness, social harmony, environmental conservation, civic duties and indigenous thinking will be covered in the lectures.' Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of Maratha empire, was crowned as king on the Raigad fort on June 6, 1674. Lodha also announced that six new advanced courses will be introduced in ITIs from the upcoming academic year. 'These are artificial intelligence (AI), industrial robotics, drone technology, 3D printing, electric vehicle technology and solar energy systems. These courses aim to provide students with global-standard training in emerging technologies,' he said. The department's new Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model has received a positive response from industry players. With over 1.2 lakh students enrolled in ITIs across the state, the new initiatives are expected to improve job prospects and bridge the gap between skills and industry requirements, Lodha said.
