Country comes first, party later: Supriya Sule presents unified Indian stance from all-party delegation in Addis Ababa

Addis Ababa [Ethiopia], June 1 (ANI): All-party delegation led by NCP-SCP MP Supriya Sule on Sunday presented a cohesive message to the international community, showcasing India's collective commitment to addressing terrorism and security concerns. By involving members from different parties, the delegation highlighted national consensus on key issues, strengthening India's position globally. Underlining the delegation's united front, Supriya Sule said, 'For us, the country comes first, state second, party third and then our family. We come here as a team of all parties. For me, ours is a heavyweight delegation, as most have served as ministers in important departments...' BJP MP Anurag Thakur criticised Pakistan for allegedly glorifying terrorists. He said, '... Pakistan Army officials, Police personnel and leaders attended the funerals of slain terrorists and the bodies of those terrorists were wrapped in the Pakistani flag; no country does so but Pakistan did... Their minister accepted on camera that Pakistan has been doing this dirty work for decades...' Notably, Hafiz Abdul Rauf, a US-designated global terrorist and high-level Lashkar-e-Taiba commander, led funeral prayers for those who died in the Indian missile strikes. Rauf has been implicated in facilitating LeT's operations, which include high-profile attacks such as the 2008 Mumbai terror attack that killed 166 people. The U.S. Department of the Treasury designated Rauf as a global terrorist in 2010 under Executive Order 13224 for his role in LeT's financial and logistical networks. AAP MP Vikramjit Singh Sawhney echoed the call for peace and condemned the attempt to link terrorism with religion. '...We have come to give a message of peace... Terrorism has no religion, but the neighbouring country (Pakistan) is trying to give it a mask of religion. We will never let them succeed...' Congress MP Anand Sharma also addressed the Indian community in Addis Ababa and spoke about India's response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. He said the country gave a 'befitting reply' under Operation Sindoor and emphasised India's long-standing belief in non-violence. 'It is an ancient culture of centuries that we do not attack any country, but we gave the attackers a befitting reply. Our army fought back strongly this time too; they targeted only the terrorist organisations,' Sharma said. Congress MP Manish Tiwari warned Pakistan of consequences if it continues supporting terrorism. 'If they do not stop promoting terrorism, then India's response will be very aggressive,' he said. Earlier, the delegation met Tagesse Chaffo, Speaker of the House of Peoples' Representatives of Ethiopia, and members of the House. They also delivered remarks on Operation Sindoor and India's united stance against terrorism. The Supriya Sule-led delegation includes Rajiv Pratap Rudy (BJP), Vikramjit Singh Sahney (AAP), Manish Tewari (Congress), Anurag Singh Thakur (BJP), Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu (TDP), Anand Sharma (Congress), V Muraleedharan (BJP), and former diplomat Syed Akbaruddin. Seven such all-party delegations are currently participating in outreach programmes in different countries. The delegations aim to brief international partners on India's strong response to the April 22 terror attack and its broader fight against cross-border terrorism. (ANI)

PMF: Meta's censorship of former leader unacceptable

Shafaq News/ On Monday, Iraq's Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) condemned Meta for removing posts featuring Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis. In a statement, the PMF criticized Meta for repeated takedowns of content related to al-Muhandis, asserting that such actions violate freedom of expression and disrespect a figure officially recognized under Iraqi law. The PMF is a state-sanctioned paramilitary force formed in 2014 to fight ISIS and later incorporated into Iraq's formal security apparatus. Al-Muhandis served as its Deputy Head until his killing in a US drone strike near Baghdad airport in January 2020. Meta's platforms typically restrict content linked to individuals or entities designated under 'terrorism' sanctions, and Al-Muhandis was sanctioned by the US and designated under Executive Order 13224. 'Classifying his name and image as prohibited content is an insult to Iraqi institutions and the memory of those who fought terrorism,' the PMF stated. The group accused the company of applying 'selective and politicized standards' that fail to respect national sovereignty, warning that continued censorship would be considered interference in Iraq's internal affairs. 'The Popular Mobilization Forces reserves the right to respond through legal, diplomatic, and media channels to counter this unacceptable overreach,' the statement concluded.

Fresh US sanctions on Hezbollah officials and financial facilitators

Shafaq News/ On Thursday, the US Department of the Treasury imposed sanctions on four individuals linked to Hezbollah's financial operations, including senior officials and financial facilitators based in Lebanon and Iran. According to the Treasury's statement, the action targets those involved in funding the group through global donor networks and financial services. The sanctions, issued by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), designate Mu'in Daqiq Al-'Amili, Jihad Alami, Fadi Nehme, and Hasan Abdallah Ni'mah under Executive Order 13224, as amended, for their roles in supporting Hezbollah financially and operationally. Al-'Amili, a senior Hezbollah representative in Qom, Iran, coordinated cash transfers from Tehran to Lebanon for the group's leadership, including a $50,000 delivery in late 2023 following the outbreak of conflict in Gaza. Alami, based in Lebanon, received and distributed those funds as part of his role with Hezbollah's financial apparatus. Nehme, an accountant and business partner of Hezbollah's Central Finance Unit chief, has been linked to the now-designated financial services firm Auditors for Accounting and Auditing, 'accused of facilitating financial activities for the group' alongside senior Hezbollah finance official Naser Hasan Neser. Ni'mah, another senior Hezbollah figure, was designated for coordinating large financial transactions across Africa. In 2022, he oversaw the delivery of hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Hezbollah-aligned Islamic Movement of Nigeria. 'Property and interests in property of the individuals within US jurisdiction are frozen, and US persons are generally prohibited from engaging in transactions with them'. In addition, entities owned 50% or more by the designated individuals are also blocked. The Treasury warned that engaging in certain transactions with the sanctioned individuals could expose foreign financial institutions to secondary sanctions. This includes potential restrictions on US correspondent banking access. Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Michael Faulkender said the move underscores Hezbollah's continued reliance on international financial networks, particularly in Iran. 'Treasury will continue to intensify economic pressure on the key individuals in the Iranian regime and its proxies who enable these deadly activities,' he stated. Thursday's action builds on previous US sanctions targeting Hezbollah's financial and commercial infrastructure, particularly following the group's involvement in the October–November 2024 conflict with Israel.

Guns Trafficked to Mexican Cartels Could Result in Terrorism Charges for ‘Straw Purchasers,' Officials Say

Federal law enforcement officials along the U.S. Southern Border warned U.S. citizens that the Trump administration has added a new wrinkle to the crime of trafficking guns and cash into Mexico. They said the Trump administration's designation of Mexican Cartels as international terrorist organizations doesn't just impact how the U.S. government deals with cartel and gang members from other countries. Timothy Courchaine, interim U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona, said instructions from the White House and the Department of Justice are unequivocal. His office will pursue terrorism charges against those who traffic guns to terrorist organizations because the security of Americans is at stake. This includes U.S. citizens doing business with the cartels, he said. 'The mission here is a no-fail mission,' Courchaine said. 'There will be no mercy for those charges, because the cartels and foreign terrorist organizations have no mercy for others.' Related Stories 5/1/2025 3/26/2024 Guadalupe Ramirez Jr., director of field operations for the Customs and Border Patrol field office in Nogales, said that anyone who does business with one of the designated terrorist organizations is involved in a 'direct act of terrorism.' He and representatives of Homeland Security Investigations, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and the U.S. Attorney for the District of Arizona hosted a press conference at the Mariposa Port of Entry at Nogales, Arizona, on May 2. They pointed out that one of President Donald Trump's first actions in his second term was to designate certain cartels and other criminal groups as global terrorist organizations. The Executive Order 13224, signed by President George W. Bush 10 days after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, authorizes the government to prosecute and seize the assets of anyone offering support to a terrorist organization. 'Engaging in weapons trafficking, particularly to support designated foreign terrorist organizations, comes with severe legal consequences, including terrorism-related charges with long sentences, financial penalties,' Ramirez said. The officials said that, as a rule, drugs and people are trafficked north across the border into the United States. Money, guns, and ammunition are smuggled south into Mexico. Ramirez said federal law enforcement officers have intensified efforts to stop the southbound contraband. While hard figures from the first 100 days of Trump's second term were not available, Ramirez said those efforts have made an impact. Brendan Iber, special agent in charge of the ATF's Phoenix Field Division, agreed. President Donald Trump signs executive orders in the Oval Office of the White House on March 6, referred to a May 2 ATF According to the statement, between Jan. 20 and May 1, nationwide ATF agents seized 10,592 firearms, 655,388 rounds of ammunition, 8,722 firearm parts, and 6,335 assorted explosives. This was the result of 8,501 violent crime investigations that netted 1,912 arrests. Iber said things have changed since the statement was released. 'Since the announcement from Attorney General Bondi, earlier in the week, of the 9,700 firearms, I will tell you [based on figures] here in Arizona alone, that number is now up to 11,000,' Iber said. According to Iber, many of the seized guns were heading south as the result of so-called 'straw purchases.' A straw purchase occurs when a person who can legally buy and own firearms purchases a gun for a person who is prohibited from owning firearms. According to the Customs and Border Patrol Straw purchasers buy guns, ammunition, and other items legally, then illegally sell them to the cartels. The contraband weapons and accessories are then smuggled into Mexico. Under the 2022 Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, a person convicted of making a straw purchase faces up to 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. That sentence increases to 25 years if the gun is used in a felony, an act of terrorism, or drug trafficking. Iber said the Mexican cartels prefer large-caliber semiautomatic weapons that they can convert to fully automatic firearms once they are in Mexico. In addition to other federal agencies, Iber credited federally licensed firearms dealers and U.S. citizens with helping stop straw purchases. 'We get so much information from great citizens just speaking out, notifying us when suspected criminal activity is happening,' Iber said.
